Tomorrow is the day when Dario "TLO" Wünsch is going back to germany and i took the chance to arrange that i can pick him up from the airport in Frankfurt before he goes home to Leipzig.
He will stay one more night at my place and i will do a interview with him about his time in Korea about his future and all the questions the Community probably have.
The Interview will be in german but we will Subtitle it for all the english viewers and bring it out as a show on esl-tv on Saturday if we are good in time
Right now i just have a german announcment where i tell you this in a Youtube Video.
The reason i write a message here is that i was wondering if some of the german sc2 / tlo fans are up to be in FFM at the airport to welcome him.
He is going with this plan LH 713 and arrives at 6:45 pm i guess it would be great to pick him up with a few people and do a live interview at the airport with him
Hope you like the idea and you are looking forward to this like i do
You can write down questions in the comments if you are intrested in something which you always wanted to ask tlo

Arrival Video [VOD of cell phone live stream, excuse the bad quality]:
Great to have him back, but Frankfurt is too far for me as well. But i have to work anyway Unless you take a flight to the great international airport that is Münster/Osnabrück :D
On one hand I am sad to see him not succeed in Korea, on the other I would love to see the western scene explode and for this to happen we need players like TLO.
Anyway, can you ask TLO which tournaments he prioritizes(a dumb question, I know, It's IEM)?
Linda "Pikachu" Liao, winner of the ESL SC2 Female Cup, seems flattered that you thought she was the only player your friend Laejten couldn't beat. Is there any chance of romance?

Jesus christ, I regret not taking German in school now. Its not that hard language either. But is TLO german or dutch? And Dutch is nothing like German right?
Nice having him back, I think it was actually good for the western scene.

TLO is german.
And you can understand, or at least guess, some words of dutch if you know german. But its not enough to really get what they say
Damn, why he can't just arrive at munic airport? Frankfurt airport is the most "middle" one to arrive though.

that cup was a joke lol some of the pvp games were 4gate against 4warpgate if u know what i mean...
Thank God someone finally said something about the actual matches in that tourney. I would like to figure out if that was the same Pikachu that TLO was referring to, there are a couple of Pikachu players on the EU server and I'm sure something was lost in translation there.
Anywho, I hope some people are there to welcome TLO in Germany. I live in the US so there's nothing I can do about that, but I'll be happy to see him compete outside of Korea. I don't know about you guys but I have more fun sitting for a weekend watching an event like MLG, instead watching an entire tourney for a whole month
Well I'd like to ask which tournaments he is planning on doing in europe and if he is gonna try make a living playing the game in europe? Where does he plan on staying while practicing? How much do you think your play will decrease when you don't have a team to physically practice with?
I wonder who pays for all these flights... Seoul to Dallas, Dallas Seoul, Seoul Frankfurt.. I'm just guessing, but this is at least 2500 $/€ in under a week...

This thread is about TLO not how terrible the female cup was (as everyone should have expected)... My question for TLO is whether he's interested in hooking up with Pikachu or not. Maybe have a hetero version of the Gundam.WeRRa incident.

Oh god, that was terrible and you should feel bad for saying it.
A lot of people seem to think Terran suited you better. Do you think this is because you're not a "macro" player and people don't respect your mechanics in the same way they respect your creativity? I noticed you don't tend to have a lot of units until lategame as zerg, compared to people like ret or idra, do you attribute this to your aggression or as a flaw in your macro that you need to work on?
On November 11 2010 04:53 OverLulz wrote: wow this is awesome i could actually come since i live in frankfurt. but doesnt TLO need to leave quickly in order to catch a train or someting?
No we will stay at least 45-60mins for some talks with the guys who are around : )
Questions for TLO: 1. do you sometimes think that you get misconceived as a player when people just tend to focus on your creativity? In most cases it seems like "creative" gets used as an counterpart to solid/mechanical play but seeing your games at MLG there wasn`t actually so much fancy stuff or weird unit composition but mostly an aggresive/micro-heavy use of lings/roaches and infestors. 2. ( this question might somewhat overlap with 1): The idea of how to play Zerg seems still heavily influenced by the image (created by the likes of e.g. Idra and Artosis) to be a race that requires a reactionary/defensive style and favours the type of players that purely focus on machine-esque execution. Considering that your approach to the Zerg race seems to differ would you say that the validity of this image is defeaseable?
To Dario: What do you think about the balance of each zerg match up currently? If you feel like there are some imbalance, do you think balancing maps would fix it?
hey dario! glad you're happy to be home although i would have loved to have grabbed a beer/soju with you before you left. if you ever come back to korea please hit me up
Q: hey dario why the strange playstyle? i mean mlg was okay overall but in the replay pack released in the liquid weekly you 13 pool every match and you go ling only and don't expand very often do you really think that's effective? give some reasons!
Why did he come home? Did he just not like Korea or did he realize that due to the stiff competition he can win a ton more money outside of Korea? I'm sure it's pretty hard to go from being one of, if not the, best foreigners to becoming a relative no body in Korea.

Do it! Absolutely! We demand live media coverage of our superstar's return.
lol. LR of tlo's return. Hoping for good pictures, or maybe even stream/video. His flight should have landed over 30mins ago according to frankfurt airport.
The stream's quality is horrible, it stops every few seconds and has weird beeping noises in between ... and it's the most awesome thing I've seen today. This is so cool ^^. Thanks for the live coverage.
wow, that's so cool, didn't think that many would show up..but what's up with the camera? stopping and beeping ^^ edit: but i guess he should be really tired after that long trip + jet lag ~~
yeah, thats what I was thinking, who cares about the quality, as long as there is a stream also: "how much korean did you learn?" "annyeong haseo!" TLO for the win, guess you don't really have that much time to learn the language if you're busy being awesome xD
He's now talking about MLG and the greats results of TeamLiquid! And he's saying he tries to compete in a lot of tournaments in Europe. And he wants to try to qualifier for the next EPS season. He wants to go everywhere in Europe. Dallas was really cool. At Blizzcon were so many people around him so he can't walk! Korea was a great experience, even though it wasn't as long as expected.
Thanks zatic for streaming, this was pure awesomeness. Having a crowd with signs greeting him at the airport and then signing SC2 boxes and answering questions ... incredible. And he even waved at the ~200 stream viewers.

what do you guys think, in how many other gaming communities would something like this be possible?
I'm curious how it happens that someone makes 462 posts on TeamLiquid.net doesn't have the slightest idea who TeamLiquid's star player is...
I haven't had time to watch too many of TLOs games recently, but back in beta I was always glued to the screen, never knowing what kind of crazy stratergies he came up with as random.
I wonder if he still find it as easy to come up with good new and entertaining builds?

Yeah, just saw this. Might go about and put together a little translation - in case anyone's interested?
Edit: Maybe I'm a little paranoid - but is one actually allowed to publish a full-text translation? There's been so much crap happening here lately when it comes to copyright that I'm a little unsure...

just saw the article on Spiegel also hehe. There is a feedback button at the end where you can reach the author. I guess they are fine if you do a rough translation. They start to try to get more younger audience these days and also refered to TL.
Haha, pretty awesome that he got an spiegel article...
fyi, it is one of Europe's largest publications of its kind with a weekly circulation of more than one million, today, Spiegel Online is the most popular online resource for news in Germany.
I started translating the article and compared the first two articles with what the Google Translator came up with. It's pretty decent and I'd recommend reading it that way, the difference to a proper translation is smaller than I'd have guessed.
Dario Wünsch studies Anglistics in Leipzig and earns money through his hobby: E-Sports.
But the 20 year old wanted to reach more and got it: Personal coach, cook, chance to gain a little bit of glory and wealth – in South Korea as a professional PC player. Now Dario aka The Little One comes back.
Dario Wünsch put his future on stake and “it feels great”. Other students go to Madrid, New York or Sydney while the are at Uni, to get a nice CV or just for partying. Dario Wünsch, 20, went to South Korea to play. The guy from Leipzig plays professional Starcraft2, a strategy game – like chess, but only faster and with explosions.
His nickname is The Little One; he is under contract of Team Liquid. He isn’t allowed to say how much he earns, but rumors say its four-digit. In addition: trophy money, when he does quite well in tournaments. Es even was the favorite of the German championship in Starcraft 2. But in August, his team asked him if he liked to go to South Korea for one year.
In South Korea E-Sports is as popular as Baseball in the US or Soccer in Germany. There are Profi-leagues, TV-Channels cover matches and firm sponsor teams. Even the air force finance one. Champions can become millionaires.
The Coach give hints, while the cleaning lady tidys up
It took Dario Wünsch one week to decide, he talked to friends and his family – and accepted! He suspended his Anglistics studies and learned Korean instead. Since September TLO lived in Incheon, half an hour distance to Seoul. He lived in a “Gamer House” together with eleven Koreans and two Swedish guys. “A mixture of a Lan Party and hostel with the professionalism of a sports center” Dario describes the atmosphere.
The guys sleep in a six bed room, do sport in a fitness center next door and train Starcraft 2 in their PC room from midday to night. A coach gives them hints, and a cleaning lady tidies up and cooks.
“Bae-ga kop’um-nida”, he said quite often, which means “I am hungry”. In Korean “it sounds politer, because there is a “please” in the sentence” explains Dario. He loves the food of the team chef. Only Sundays the guys have to cook for themselves. “Of course you play against each other, in order to check out who has to cook”. He himself had only to cook once: “Jajangmyeon, black pasta, very tasty.”
The guys live, eat and train together, but sometimes they go for a drink. Nevertheless Dario Wünsch doesn’t know much about his teammates. Only that they don’t plan much in the future and believe they will become great E-Sports stars. They don’t want know much about him, he’s a German who wants to improve his skills in South Korea – that’s enough.
2,4 million Dollar Price trophy
Koreans train hard, mostly 10 hours and more per day, Dario Wünsch “only” six to eight. TLO hopes to win the GSL – 2,4 million Dollar is the price trophy, monthly you can win 84.000 Dollar.
In September Dario fighted and went straight through the prelim, succeed the first knock out round, but then lost. For him it is like an amateur soccer club plays against clubs of the Bundesliga. His matches where aired live on TV. For the TV Show he became make up and styling gel. So much attention “that feels quite good” he says.
A foreigner who wins the title, could become a legend like the Canadian Guillaume Patry. He was the only foreinger wo who the profi league and is still famous, even today. Dario Wünsch was an outsider but after his matches, people started to recognize him and asked him for autographs.
The trip to Asia is over
In the morning or at night, he looked after his fans, friends and family. He wrote blogs on Team Liquid, gave interviews, wrote articles on Facebook or talked to his Mum via Skype. He covered tournaments in Dallas or Anaheim (California), where he attended the Blizzcon, the exhibition of Starcraft 2 developer Blizzard. He hasn’t won a big title und doesn’t regret putting his future on sake. He developed personally and as a player, Dario Wünsch says.
In the beginning he planned to stay one year, but in the last days scene sites like Fragster.de announced the message of his team that Dario would come back to Germany in November. This Thursday night his flight landed at Frankfurt. Officially he misses his family and friends, but another reason might be: Practicing six hours a day is not enough in Korea, even in his house he went down to the B-Team. Nevertheless he can now win the German Championship.
Just a rough translation! Hope you enjoy it! Met him yesterday at the airport and hes a great guy!!!
I was actually kind of suspicious as to why TLO decided to go back to Germany after showing so much promise in Korea. But the fact that he was kicked to B-Team, maybe he decided to go back after realizing that the chances of him being even or above them were very slim. Even Jinro was kicked back into the B-Team as well.
wow, after seeing the photos from the ogs house i'm not surprised he came back. It reminds me of a chicken farm. Everyone squeezed into that tiny room just staring at their screen for 10 hours a day. I mean i know they are there to play Starcraft but still.. even i got a bigger place lol and i'm a student. That's kind of depressing...
Man that translation deserves its own thread. Anyway for the westerners thinking about how hardcore practise is in Korea, it's all about the asian mentality and work ethic. We want/need something, we'll work long hours to achieve it. You guys don't know how much work most asian students put into exam prep, projects etc so 10 hours at a screen playing computer is nothing
