Hey all. Basically, an hour ago, I just came back from the cinema after watching AVATAR.
Great film btw, and dont worry... no spoilers here :D
Well it got me thinking... what if sc2 had a 3D setting. First thing you would have to figure out is how it would work in game.
There are two ideas I thought of, 1 is to have the 3D based on the size of the unit etc to add depth to big units etc. Like in 3d films.
The second idea would be to give priority units more depth so they stick out more, for example if your a zerg vs a zerg and your in a clusterf**k of air units in battle, the banelings on the ground could have more depth so you could see them easier. Maybe with some kind of CTRL + TAB combination, you could cycle this added depth to different unit types.
So, TL'ers, think this is a good idea?
Poll: Starcraft 2 3D Setting (Vote): Both ideas are awesome! (Vote): Idea one only please (Vote): Idea two would be so good! (Vote): 3D is overhyped... but would be a good addition. (Vote): Hell no.
Remember guys... its OPTIONAL :D

How will StarCraft II be different from StarCraft?
StarCraft II will run on a vibrant new 3D-graphics engine capable of rendering beautiful landscapes as well as massive army sizes. The speed, responsiveness, and epic-scale battles that made the original StarCraft such a memorable game are all realized in 3D with this brand-new engine.

If they made SC2 in 3D as cool as Avatar, I wouldn't do anything except play it.
EDIT: @ above: So awesome! I can't wait.

so... you wear 3D glasses while playing it??

Samsung came out with an 'Nvidia powered' 3D monitor; they have it on display at my local Future Shop.
Basically it refreshes two images simultaneously, and you wear these goggles while watching the screen. The technology is pretty primitive; my eyes had a hard time adjusting to it and it gave me tension headache after 20 minutes.
I've only played Call of Duty on it, and it was quite amazing (bullets are coming at you, when you walk down streets they move passed you on either side, etc). I hear WoW is amazing on it.
Anyways, I think 3D sc2 would be badass. It would feel like you're the commader in a battlecruiser overlooking the battlefield. As a spectator, the game would also be all the more amazing to watch.
Imagine this technology 10 years from now.

As long as you have the right hardware support, there's alraedy games out there with 3d support, I've heard. Dragon Age being one of them.
I can imagine the screens being obscenely expensive considering it's pretty new tech though.
Edit: As for SC2 - I dunno what Blizzard would have to do to "3d-ize" their game for the screen and glasses, but I imagine it'd be pretty significant, so unless they've already advertised this function, I doubt we'll be seeing it anytime soon.
Aside from the "cool, my tank's on my desk!"-feel, I don't really see what this'd add to the gameplay aside from a bunch of confusion and distractions.

I don't think the games need any form of support. I played CoD4 on the 3D monitor ( a game that's about 3 years old). Basically the monitor displays 2 off-set images at the same time and the glasses make it look 3D.

Why are so many people voting no? It's not like it would hurt the competitive side and would only be a cool sidefeature for those with 3d monitors.

its never been done before so it makes it pretty risky. i would like to see some games built around this concept from the ground up before tacking it on to a game so late in development as sc2

I always get a kick out of statements like this. I remember first hearing it at the end of 2007 :p

Most graphics cards which come with a set of 3d glasses are capable of turning any 3d application which utilises directx or opengl into a 3d application anyway. You can adjust which elements of the environment come out or go into your screen with a series of sliders. So I see including such a feature as pointless.

3D would be cool for like less than 5 days. What will make us play this game for years is its gameplay, and wearing glasses everytime you play is absolutely a redundancy.

while ofc this feature PROBABLY wouldn't contribute alot, it might help bring some more hype. And who knows, might be awesome.
