They lost the first game and only got a draw in the second after being up two goals, so it's been a bad start. There were reports before the second game that he already lost the dressing room with some of his decisions (e. g. his choice of captain), and reports after the second game that the team purposely ignored some of his instructions altogether.
Probably also made himself unpopular with his bosses when he asked for reinforcements in public. But to go through the entire pre-season with a new coach, when you sell half your starting 11 and don't have your squad together by the end of August, and then sacking the new coach after matchday 2, that's not a great look.

A lot of people are saying it was Leverkusen CEO Carro who wasn't happy with hiring Ten Hag in the first place and orchestrated the sacking. However, Ten Hag got there despite Carro's opinion, so I assume he must have already lost some of the support during his stay also.

The other major aspect of the window regarding incomings centred on the goalkeeper. United did not intend to make a signing in the position when the window opened but circumstances changed when Onana came back for pre-season. He reported an issue with his hamstring on day one, and then a full injury on day two, but this left staff questioning what shape he was in after the summer to suffer the problem straight away.
For Amorim, the setback left a lasting impression, with Altay Bayindir selected in the first three Premier League games. Onana was left out of the squad entirely for the Arsenal despite feeling he was fit to play, with Tom Heaton named on the bench. Onana was surprised when overlooked at Craven Cottage.
On reflection the seeds had been sown at the end of last season, when Bayindir started the final Premier League game of the campaign against Aston Villa, with Heaton among the substitutes and Onana left out following a disappointing performance in the Europa League final.
Onana came back to Carrington wanting a new contract — he has been of that view since receiving the standard 25 per cent cut for non-qualification to the Champions League — a stance that did not go down well with Amorim. Yet United made no efforts to sell Onana. Monaco were the only club to register a real interest in him but they were informed his price was a minimum £30m. Monaco declined to go further.
Following the Fulham game Onana’s representatives again checked if United wished for them to seek exit options but they were told not to, and that the player remains a part of Amorim’s plans.

Pretty damning? These sounds like things any coach could do, but are listed here in order to make a case. Could be tons of reasons he missed 1 pregame talk. And what manager wouldn't be pissed when he's appointed and they sell of over half of the starting squad. 'not being charismatic enough' (while true) is now a ground for immediate sacking? And there are loads of managers that don't speak the language, even after years. I'm not a fan of Ten Hag but if that's a case any club could fire it's manager today.

Ten Hags german is probably better than Alonsos anyways. Thats not the reason. Somehow he managed to immediately lose the dressing room.

It would be a bit funny sacking one of the biggest overachievers in recent history and replace him with the guy who almost got Spurs relegated. I know things are more nuanced than that, but it's still a pretty stark contrast in their recent resumes.
I saw some Reddit post mention that Nuno could fit current United and help them recover some form. I don't know if Nuno has any desire to go there though and it feels like United is still sticking with Amorim for now. We'll see if anyone makes moves over the international break.

It might actually be a good time to go there, especially if you’re not a ‘sexy’ name.
You’d be taking over a well-resourced sleeping giant, and crucially, unlike previous occasions, I don’t think expectations will be that high. Some slow and steady improvement, without a huge amount of pressure to be winning things or competing for the big prizes out the gate.
I could see coaches who’d not have been able to hope for that gig being in the frame previously, being so this time around, and with enough rope to potentially do well.

I think the recent Utd transfer window also looks... reasonable. They addressed some of the issues in the roster with players who have decent PL experience & routine, but who are also young enough to commit to the rebuild. They also got rid of some of the unsettled players.
Surely you need more than one window to address all the issues, but it doesn't look like a terrible window to me. The biggest gripe I have with it is mostly that they still can't seem to play Amorim-ball.
So maybe it isn't a terrible moment to join United.
