England deserve to go out either way.

Yep, 100 %. This specific conspiracy looks a little doubtful after the germany game and this.

Well, that was clown fiesta. On the one hand, the small teams showed they had some fight in them. On the other, we have whatever that match was as the first in the knockout rounds. And there'll probably be a few more along the way, although the rest look like they'll be walkovers for one strong side.

For now, I stand corrected. I expected this to be a pretty easy rout for England. I was very clearly wrong. Congo put up one helluva fight.

It was not clear, and it was confirmed by VAR. Kane was on his way down before he had minimal contact with the GK. He also played for the penalty, not the goal.

Kane got his revenge, so it is all good.

There was clear contact with the keeper and he gave kane a good reason to go down. I see it as 100% being a penalti with any other referee than the one who was there.

He stretched out his foot to get the ball past the GK, and lost his balance. The contact happened during the fall, and he had no chance of reaching the ball.

In this tournament, referees do not award attackers who fall easily to get free kicks and penalties. Play ball, not theatre. They are also tough on dangerous and destructive play.

I think this is a move in the right direction.

Tbh I love the refereeing in the tourney because they are consistently not giving freekicks or penalties when players fall easily. Even with the ad breaks I still feel games are more fluid than they've been in other championships - or than they are in the champions league.

I'd like to watch Kane's situation more before really giving my opinion but I thought at least the gk was Kane falling before contact - so no penalty there. But unsure about the defender - didn't watch it close enough. Norwegian pundits agreed it was not a penalty, fwiw.

Kane definitely looks for contact there, but yeah... I do think the goalie get to make a decision here. Either get a touch on the ball or avoid contact you commit to a lunge like that.

I can live with either interpretation, but I definitely would have expected that to get called. If this is the way the call it, then they better keep it consistently that way.

I thought it was a pen too. Keeper is clearly late and comes fast into the challenge with no indication of trying to slow himself or avoid it.

Also, is this the world cup of braces? I feel like we have the most already, all the superstars are just scoring braces for fun right now.

I don’t mind it as it seems there’s a pretty consistently high threshold in the games I’ve watched.

It just takes some getting used to I suppose! One becomes used to the general standard for a penalty in most European leagues or European continental competition being rather different

In other news, and I’m not one obsessed with it, I wonder if Harry Kane is gradually edging to that Ballon D’Or. A bunch of his prime competition either didn’t have as stellar club campaigns, or aren’t at the tournament (like a Kvaratskhelia)

5 goals, including a complete rescue act tonight isn’t a bad return already and he might yet get more.

In a world cup year the world cup decides. Watch them give it to Messi.

Or Mbappe. Or Haaland after Norway wins the WC.

Also Belgium-Senegal had so much drama. I was a good 99% certain Belgium was out around the 84 minute mark - didn't look like they had anything to respond with at all.

No shade on Forest either but I’d have expected Glasner to have moved to a side competing for honours somewhere rather than making something of a sideways move

Any thoughts on the 2nd goal of Belgium? It looks like the Senegalese defender gets fouled, but then again it feels really soft for a situation where both are contesting for a header and somehow the defender falls really dramatically.

It might be one of those where the defender is caught while jumping or it might be dramatic effect on a really soft play. The whole thing just looks really odd to me and I can't figure out whether it should be called a foul or not.

We were all a bit surprised at Forest too.
However, if you take Glasner at his word, he didn't leave Palace to go get a job at a bigger side, he left because he had no say over transfers.
We've apparently offered him lots of control, and he has alot of money to spend because of Anderson.

It looks like a nothingburger. Like basic physical contact. Not even shoving.

Then again, that would have been a perfect situation for a wrong VAR call this WC is famous for

Spain looked great vs Austria! I think they are the favorites to win this, alongside France. Great players who play well together all over the field. Apparently Spain has amazing GKs as well, they just never get challenged. How do you even beat them?
