He was like this since Hoffenheim. He's an arrogant know-it-all and blames everyone but himself, mostly the refs.

I think the decision to take back the goal was questionable by the ref regarding how other situations in the goalie zone were handled over the tourney. It was a very strict interpretation of the rule.
But with that team on paper you can't blame it on that decision. With 4-5 supposedly world class players it shouldn't go to overtime. Yeah they played deep and closed the center, who would have thought?

He definitely hit new lows with the national squad. Still, as mentioned earlier, I think he was probably right about Undav/not starting him and instead using him as a super sub. Undav contributed next to nothing against Paraguay (of course he is not alone with that - Sane and Nmecha also had shockers, for example). But the Neuer farce was an unforced error.

Nagelsmann is a good coach but his man management is not elite.

Edit: Does not change that the decision to overturn the goal was a disgrace. Absolutely not in line with the way the game had been refereed up until it happened.

I'm not sure if it was Henry or not, but someone basically said with this kind of referee, Arsenal would have been relegated xD

Nagelsmann is not a good coach. Plan A was questionable, Plan B or C was non-existent. Undav did barely get any support. No pass at all and the crosses were horrible. All Germany did was play side to side in slow motion then proceed to lose the ball under no pressure whatsoever. That is NOT good coaching.
And don't get me startet on his interviews and stuff. No wonder German media compared him to a stubborn toddler.

I think there's truth to that the difference between the best and second best is smaller than it used to be, but I don't think we've seen an actual shift in the power balance, even though I've seen stuff like '9/10 teams from Africa advanced' cited as evidence. Morocco looks like a top team (they did four years ago as well), and Senegal and Ivory Coast look good - but no better than various African teams from different world cups since 1990.

Basically, what we see is a combination of two different factors - one, that a lot of teams are good enough defensively to get a draw against a superior side. In a bo1 knockout tournament, this is enough to pose a danger to most sides. Secondly, the format means a lot more of those teams advanced - and it gives us one more round of bo1 knockout, meaning we get more chances for upsets. With only top 2 advancing, we'd have five African teams in this stage, not 9,and no Ecuador or Paraguay. Only Egypt, Morocco and Ivory Coast would have say real shot at going far.

I've posted this before but - winning teams are almost always lucky. I've watched every wc since 1990 and I think Brazil in 2002 was clearly the best team in the tournament. France in 2018 managed to win without needing extra time or penalties (a rare occurrence), but easily could've lost in the ro16 against Argentina. Other than these two, there's always a game or two that could easily have flipped the other way.

However, this means that the best teams need to win a sequence of weighted flips, where they have between 75% and 50% chance to win each flip, while the 'bad' teams need to win several 25%s in a row. It's entirely possible for Colombia to reach the semi (they also have a very beneficial draw), but they aren't going to face Paraguay when they get there. Maybe we're looking at a change in the sense that mid-tier teams have increased their win chance from 15-20% to 25-30%, but I'm still fairly confident our final top 4 will have at least three from the 'traditional contenders' - France, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, England, Portugal. Morocco (or nld, typing this right as penalties are about to start), Colombia or even US, or Norway () have a fighter's chance. But most likely we're not getting a debutant finalist this year either.

2002 I don't disagree with your assessment that Brazil was the best team. However, I want to add two things. First the disallowed goal from Belgium in their Ro16 match against Brazil. Most observers agreed back then that this was a clear goal and should have stood. It was 36th minute, so plenty of time to fight back. But based on your argument, their title also had a very lucky moment.
Second comment regarding 2002 has nothing to do with your argument, but that World Cup sucked. The level of play was horrific. Brazil in my memory also wasn't very impressive that year. Germany was terrible that WC and had a 50:50 chance in the finals, up until the Kahn moment.

I think it's also the game evolving. Skill used to be more important than it is now. In the past, kids would be selected by skill much more, while now, the biggest, fastest and strongest players are the most useful and you can always teach them some level of skill. A player like Brobbey is like Barracks the terran player. Pure physicality, with some level of touch and smarts added in later. Look at all the rosters and the majority of players is on the left of the Brobbey - Messi scale I just invented. Often a team will only have 1-2 skill outliers.

And fielding 11 strong, fast, powerful guys that have been drilled tactically gets you a long way. Countries like Bosnia and Switzerland have always been like this a bit, but nowadays African countries can do it too, since they no longer have guys that are trying to build their highlight reel in order to earn a transfer. Ecuador has shown in qualifiers how well it works too.

Yeah Nagelsmann singling out Undav after Germany was eliminated was another low point in this farce of a manager...

Never felt so high after Japan scored that first goal, then never felt so low after watching the final ball get passed in between the defenders and slotted home. Part of my soul got ripped out in that stadium yesterday. Difficult to play against Brazil when they finally remember it's a team game and don't just stand around playing pass it between your center backs. Too much quality for Japan and every cross looked dangerous.

Also lol. Germany and Netherlands out in round one already.

If Sweden goes through, it will be the biggest robbery of the tournament! Weird misses from France.

Edit: and there was the goal. Should have been 3 in the first half alone.

France looks fantastic going forward. Not rock solid defensively but their attacking power is unrivaled. I hope they get to the finals at least- definitely the most entertaining team in the wc to me.

Also Norway is in a state of collective euphoria. If we beat Brazil, I'm guessing April 5th 2027 is gonna be a popular birthday. That Nusa goal..

A starting 4 of Mbappe, Dembele, Doue/Barcola, and Olise is just absurd to have. Their firepower is simply unmatched. Then you have Doue/Barcola and Cherki off the bench as well. Even guys like Mateta and Thuram are serviceable.

The best bits I saw on the Norway game looked really good. The most impressive thingy for me was how versatile the attacks were. The set pieces looked dangerous, then there's the individual Nusa magic and then there were some very nice looking movement combinations like the 2nd goal.

Also a lot of more quiet spells over the 90 minutes, but I don't think it's easy to completely shut them down as long as so many players keep contributing so nicely.

All the talk today is Forest apparently trying to replace Pereira with Glasner.
Pereira apparently refused a contract extension.

I can't understand it, we looked really good at the end of last season.

Absolutely no idea, but the Telegraph are talking about it like a done deal.

I suppose the £116m we're getting from Anderson might be a factor if we've promised Glasner he can use it for whatever signings he wants.

If Klopp becomes Germany coach (and gets good results) - this is something that could boost the whole country (Germany's "happiness" is at an all time low imo...)

I thought the refs were all conspiring to give the big calls to the ‘big nations’?

That’s a penalty for me all day long
