And yeah, it made sense to me why I stopped watching the game in the first place. I just don't feel the magic in the game anymore. Anyway, yeah, this isn't meant to be a disparaging post about the state of the sport.

I'll be keeping a close eye on Arsenal's PL final run-in. Really want them to win the league. It's been so long. Speaking of which, I don't really get the whole support behind City? Why would anyone want them to win over Arsenal? I mean, I get it, sure, but it's stupid? Short term fleeting gain for long term pain and enshittification of the league.

You should have watched the PSG vs Bayern instead xDD

I mean Atlético attacked more and had more chances than Arsenal that match (specially in the second half). So it is not like Arsenal is a fun team to watch.

Agreed. So combining the both is a tough choice, specially after the game from the previous day :D

Weirdly in my experience there seem more anti-Arsenal haters out there, I mean you’d prefer the oil state club? :S strange to me

If you had watched the game on Tuesday instead, you might have left with the opposite impression.

Arsenal first penalty: Soft. Give or not give, both options possible IMO though I tend to NO

Arsenal second penalty: Also soft, but IMO clearer than the first. I tend to YES

Result: Both teams deserve one penalty. Fair result, no team got fcked from the refs.
Atleti was the better team.

Agreed outside of Atletico being better, think it was pretty even.

I think the handball situation is complete bullshit, but within the realm of bullshit, probably the correct call. Aside from money distortion, handball is probably my least favourite thing in the game currently, but as it’s currently interpreted that was probably fair enough

Arsenal second penalty was like 100% a penalty, absolutely a soft one.

It’s just frustrating. I think in the pre-VAR age all incidents would be things fans would moan about, given moaning about refereeing decisions is a constant. But not that much, given they’re kinda borderline calls

Once you have VAR you have way less leeway on these marginal calls, you don’t have the excuse of simply misjudging in real time from a potentially awkward angle.

There’s a maddening lack of consistency. If you’re gonna disrupt the flow of the game, get it right

I have a soft spot for Arsenal since the Wenger/Henry days and want them to win but I can see how Artetaball is easy to hate. I mean they played low block for half an hour to defend a one goal lead against last place Wolves and got punished.

The bigger problem is that Saka and Odegaard went from being the most exciting creative players in the league to being always injured or shadows of themselves between injuries.

arsenals fans are annoying for sure, but for me as a non-fan, the way i look at arsenal is by separating the club from the fanbase. i have a lot of respect for the actual club and like dan hh i have a soft spot for them also, despite being traditionally rivals with utd.

i also agree that arteta's arsenal this season gives a lot of reason for people to dislike them. arsenal to me have always been the "english barcelona". that feels like their identity for an outsider looking in, and its why i came to respect that club a lot. theyve definitely lost that identity this season for sure.

and why i dont want city to win is no brainer. id take arsenal over city every single season

One of the most ridiculously dramatic games I’ve ever heard of!

Also, this is in the fifth tier of English football. There’s legitimately nowhere else on the planet you get this that low down the pyramid.

But look I think it’s important we don’t give a World Cup to the home of the game and possibly the single best place on the planet football infrastructure wise to host such a thing.

On the plus side UEFA are slightly less idiotic than FIFA so we get a Euros in the UK

I saw some poll signaling that people much prefer City to win the PL. Maybe it's just a silly internet poll or some other bias, but I can see a lot of people thinking the PL winners as an exclusive club and the fewer teams there are there, the more bragging rights your club may have and the less the others have.

I don't really have much club banter among my local friends, so I'm completely fine with Arsenal refreshing their achievement, but it seems that a lot of people are pretty happy giving City another win rather than handing Arsenal anything.

Edit: the Arsenal fans still arguing that VAR should not have interrupted because the mistake from the ref wasn't "clear and obvious" (meaning good simulation should be rewarded?) are making me hope they won't win the tie.

It’s what makes Infantino considerably worse than Blatter for my money. I think he genuinely believes his ‘football can heal the world’ shtick and by extension his role in facilitating that. Blatter was just regular old corrupt, although tbf his reign wasn’t all terrible.

That footage is absolutely excruciating and I think further evidence that Infantino believes his own nonsense. Only a delusional person puts themselves in a position that’s so obviously going to backfire and make them look a tit

Hasn’t seen this one I have to confess. I don’t think it necessarily should be a penalty but by ‘100% penalty’ I’m going off general standards in the comp this season which appear to be basically if there’s contact it’s a penalty.

It’s the most frustrating part of VAR for me. It will inevitably interrupt the flow of a match, and the spontaneity of celebrations etc, the ostensible tradeoff should be consistency and accuracy.

I think mistakes being corrected is fine, but Arteta and Arsenal fans do have a point, it’s supposed to be used for clear and obvious errors. I think that’s stupid personally, mistakes are more likely to occur in tricky or unclear instances. Also, only applying it for ‘clear and obvious’ adds another unnecessary layer of subjectivity as to what constitutes that or doesn’t.

It's definitely going to be a pretty big change in workload next season. This season they managed to play just the 40, I think (No European football, eliminated in cups after first game and 38 PL games). Next season could be closer to 60 if they play up to the standard a club of their stature should.
