I wouldn’t say they’re always doing that, they played Bayern off the park in the group stages

They’re not a sexy side compared to some, but I think they’re being cast as some peak catenaccio side and they ain’t that either.

I’m not sure why they’re quite as unpopular as they are considering the opposition in winning a Prem is a gulf state project, and their opponent in the CL is a gulf state project

I guess Inter had some underdog credit in their run last year so people weren’t especially negative about my boys, and I’d say Inter were just as, if not more negative and cautious than Arsenal are this year.

Not an Arsenal fan meself but I am a bit puzzled about quite how much people are rooting against em seemingly

Yeah Arsenal playing bad is a factor, but prem stupid tv money has a big impact as well.

And its not like Arsenal team was cheap either? Same with Liverpool. So yeah City has a rich owner and has a few more options but compared to other leagues?

Just nonsense writting from my side, no actual fact checking at all but i would bet Arsenal and PSG teams are not far off in value, not to the point that you say yeah psg is just better because of gulf money. So whatever simpaty someone with that line of thought might have, doesn't apply here.

the problem with psg isnt the current value of the squad. its the same problem as the rest of the epl taking issue with man citys 115 charges. those charges arent relevant to the current squad, but the current squad and the clubs trophy cabinet, their current position as a "big club" etc. all wouldnt exist if not for that money.

i would normally be rooting against psg in all circumstances but this time is probably the only exception im making. its one thing to see arsenal fans be obnoxious about winning the league, its a whole another level if they actually win the double. today at lunch i saw a random dude walking around with an arsenal shirt on for the first time in like...maybe close to 15 years. theyre starting to come out of hiding now.

also i agree with comments scholes has been making a lot recently in that i dont agree arsenals team this season is a great team. they will be remembered for their historic achievement if they bring a title back to arsenal, but they wont be remembered in a positive light for the football they played. and the inter comparison to me doesnt hold up because for me italian football has always kind of been like that. you kind of expect it from the italian juggernauts because their national identity in football is defense. the criticism against arsenal would be that they sold their soul in a sense to win their trophies

The nouveau riche (including Abramovich too) raised the bar on spending, others had to follow or become non-competitive largely at the top table.

I think it’s oft forgotten that Arsenal were basically left non-competitive in the latter Wenger years when financing the Emirates, for this exact reason. And they kept losing some of their top players to those who could spend more then

PSG have basically ruined Ligue Une as a competitive league, Man City have their 115 charges (well that case ever be bloody heard?) hanging over them

As a neutral I’m inclined to consider Arsenal slightly less irritating than teams that are even more symptomatic of problems I have with the modern game

I think PSG is 'fine' from a CL-perspective. There, they're competing with other super-rich teams, and there's nothing weird about Paris having a competitive team. The issue is that they've ruined the competitiveness of the french league through a huge artificial injection of money. The premier league is different - there are lots of teams with huge cash bags, so city doesn't destroy the competition in the same way.

Tbh I don't really have any issues with Arsenal being cynical now. They're desperate for a title, so close to getting it, haven't won anything in forever. I also grew up with 'boring arsenal' so nothing new.

Nice drama today though.

In Arsenals defence, they did play some pretty good/ attractive football the last few seasons and didn't win anything so it would only be fair if they win something now with boring ass football.

From a viewers perspective, both City and PSG play more attractive and derserve to win.

Not only this, but everyone in the whole world kept taking the piss out of them for bottling everything and being mentally weak and unable to see things out and do whatever it takes to win matches.

They aren't good enough to be Pep's Barcelona, if they're going to win the league they need to find a way to do it. I find it ridiculously unfair that they made the adjustments everyone said they needed to make and now they are getting railed for it.

i dont think its unfair at all. its perfectly fine to make the observation that arsenal arent enjoyable to watch this season. if they win trophies then kudos to them for getting over the line, but we dont have to pretend that their performances blew people away.

the truth is they didnt. they did what was needed and that was enough, but thats all there is to say about this team. the drama about the west ham decision earlier today says it all tbh. any impartial fan is going to look at that incident and say its definitely a foul. the problem is that arsenal have been playing that way all season and theyve gotten away with it. its the entire reason why theyve developed a certain identity around set pieces this season, because they discovered they can in fact get away with it.

having to argue that west ham should not have been penalised for the sake of consistency in refereeing leaves a bad taste in your mouth because objectively it was the right decision, but thats how arsenal have been winning a lot of their games. distastefully. its completely fair to criticise them for that i would say

That depends.
If you look at the media, its the exact same people who are complaining about them now who were saying that the changes they've made were exactly what they needed to do to win things.
I don't think anyone wants people to say 'Arsenal's performances blew me away' but when Pardew comes out saying 'they might win the league, but with a caveat' and absolute nonsense like that they need their heads checking. Arteta did a great job reading the tactical lay of the land in the EPL and finding a way to get Arsenal playing above themselves for the first time in years.

Yeah it’s really only the combination that annoys me

I mean it ain’t the most thrilling football going, if people don’t dig that, totally fair.

Equally it does feel like a pundit will criticise Arsenal one week and want to see more of x, and then when Arsenal do x the next week they get criticised again for doing the thing!

I genuinely can’t recall another potential Prem winner getting this particular kind of criticism week in, week out. Sure people may not like x club or whatever but there’s usually a level of ‘fair play they’re a good side’ which isn’t a benefit that seems to be extended to this particular incarnation of Arsenal

Yeah some of it is bollocks.

I mean say what you want about Arteta, he used to get criticised for being ‘Guardiola lite’, but now he’s kinda innovated to a degree and carved out his own niche to try and get over the line. It’s not always sexy stuff, but Arsenal are a brutally physical side, and may be the best in Europe without the ball. So for me there’s at least a bit of credit due which some just refuse to ever give for whatever reason

Those were relative good calls compared to the penalty Celtic got against Motherwell the previous game week to win that match

I’d definitely be feeling aggrieved if I was in the Hearts camp, and many neutrals wanted someone to break the Old Firm stranglehold.

For those who missed that one, penalty for handball, player has his hand close to his head. No angle really conclusively establishes any hand contact, and the way the ball travels indicates a strong head contact. Absolute shocker

Rules are rules i suppose, but in terms of things on and not off the pitch, the combo of VAR + handball is for me just the worst thing in the game at the minute. You get a 75-80% shot at a goal for the tiniest infraction when you get a ball smacked at you from a short distance, in a very low-scoring game, it’s way too harsh.

That second United goal yesterday was a joke.
VAR did their job great, but the pigheaded ref wouldn't accept he was wrong.

If there was anything on that game at all I'd be absolutely fuming about it but in the end it doesn't really matter for Forest and the main thing was it was a really fun match to watch.

Newcastle - West Ham also had pretty crazy handball checked and ruled out by VAR. I think they may have looked at an offside that negated the handball, but with the current system you don't usually get much of an explanation for any decision and the clip I saw didn't show the offside line clearly either.
