the way i understand it is that because messi's contract expired, he is counted as a "new" player. had they extended his contract without letting it expire, he would have been fine to stay.

https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/lionel-messi-transfer-news-barcelona-24716333 Its daily mirror not sure how trustworthy they are, but if true its a bit of dickhead move from the Club after wishing him the best moving forward.

After Laporta sucesfull term with Rijkaard/Guardiola, a new president was elected (Rosell). He signed Neymar but later he had to resign because irregularities with the Neymar contract (he was later in prison). So his right hand, Bartomeu was temporally in charge until elections. Everyone knew he was a bad (temporal) president, with terrible signings and management and related to a corrupt ex-president. Nobody expected him to win the elections. But then something happened. Luis Enrique won the treble in 2015 when the same team had been in crisis with bad results in christmas. And that treble changed everything. The socci (supporters that can vote) elected Bartomeu because they got drunk on success. And the next 5 years he fucked the club. Bartomeu is the worst president of the club's history. Bad signings and sales, expensive wages, bad finances, constant changes of managers and management staff, etc. Even Gaspart (he wasted all Figo's money in bad transfers) looks good compared with him. So that was really a cursed treble.

Was news to me anyway, definitely seems a real killer to any progress here. Also probably makes sense if we combine it with Messi saying he accepted the 50% offer and Barca didn’t propose anything lower.

That not one newspaper or news station had them translated and gone through by a legal expert to explain them to the public, there clearly is a big interest in what is going on. Someone with common sense should be leading by a newspaper somewhere. Same. Just shows that many journalists don't know what they're talking about as well I guess.

[Ramon Alvarez de Mon] -I calculate that to register the 4 signings, Barça will have to generate 128 and 144 million in capital gains and savings in wages. I don't think the 4 will play for Barça this season unless there is a significant pay cut from the squad.

Someone with common sense should be leading by a newspaper somewhere. This seems to be a decent explanation (in Spanish): https://www.mundodeportivo.com/futbol/fc-barcelona/20210702/410325677797/en-que-consiste-el-limite-salarial-de-laliga.html Now how *exactly* it is written up in the bylaws of La Liga, and what would happen if Barça took La Liga to court over this... well... you'd have to be a lawyer. If you feel brave, here is La Liga's own explanation: https://www.laliga.com/transparencia/gestion-economica/limite-coste-plantilla And you can click on Normativa to get the PDFs with the exact formulation on how a club's limit is established, as well as the general bylaws of the league. Have fun! Now as to why Messi cannot play for free: that is a general Spanish labor law, nothing to do with La Liga. You cannot contract a previous employee at less than 50% of his previous salary. What I read was that it was anti fraud. I would have expected it to be something with worker protection or so. Either way, it's a thing. Messi cannot be contracted by Barça at 0 wages. I don't know how much effort they went to to think of constructions (e.g. he goes to Girona for 0 wages and gets loaned out to Barça? ), but as a basic contracted employee it isn't possible. EDIT: I cannot really find a good source for this last bit. It might all be misinformation. I'll try to find a reliable source for this law. Labor law in Spanish is hardly simple, so it may take me some time. EDIT 2: I'm reading up on when companies are allowed to reduce salary, and I don't find any limits other than union agreements and the minimum wage. So insofar as I understand that, Messi would in fact be able to work for Barça at minimum wage (or whatever minimum the union agreement at Barça established). Of course, it's also possible that this type of website doesn't even contemplate a reduction of more than 50%, as that is an absurd salary reduction for anybody "normal", who is worried about their employer cutting their pay.

What is most interesting is that Barca is allowed to use 25% of player sale and wage reduction on new investments (that has been mentioned earlier) but seems like reductions with sales of big players can allow to reinvestment of 50% the article mention Rakatic and Suarez as examples of this last year. So if Barca could offload Grizmann or Dembele they would properly be allowed to use larger part of that income for reinvestment.

It should have done it last season because of common sense, and implemented a force majure section that made expectations for loss of income from tickets for reasons the club not controls.
