It's wild how at the beginning of the transfer window, I was so hyped because we got Jesus and was about to get a bunch of other incredible talent, but since then it's been nothing but disappointment

He's won the prem 4 out of the last 5. I don't think he is in any danger.

Hottest hotseat is whoever is coach of Watford or Udinese as usual

Lampard's going to be doing well to still be in a job at Xmas.

Haven't Arsenal consistently underperformed since then though? I would put that down as a bad window that seemed good at the time.

I get that thought, and it's probably correct, but my thought is that if we hadn't gotten them, we'd be in far worse shape. But who knows, maybe we would've gotten better strikers (actually that's most likely the case)

Ok but in seriousness, Barca’s business is silly. They could stabilise, make the odd savvy deal and be a lock for the CL.

Given how the accounts work and whatnot they can do what they’re currently doing, but given how close they were to the precipice it seems I’ll advised to say the least.

I thought they would do the same, re sign dembele, they have aubemeyang, find some good kids around, sign up some future stars. Maybe get in one signing. Just keep pushing for champs league and free signings for 1-2 seasons and boom your back then.

Instead they seem to be "pay day loaning" by selling the tv shares to get lump sum of money to be in same boat in 2-3 years time.

The Athletic thinks Zinchenko deal is still in the workings. That's at least a second promising big signing this window as long as it goes through.

as far as i know if de jong is sold then his deferred wages become payable immediately, and barca is refusing to pay his outstanding wages and is actually asking for de jong to stay and agree to further reductions. all the meanwhile theyre paying millions for high profile transfers.
the news is de jong doesnt want another salary reduction but barca wont pay his deferred wages if he is transferred. barca however needs de jong to be transferred if he doesnt agree to a reduction because their wage bill is too high.
so either de jong agrees to a salary cut and stays like he wants, or he leaves without receiving his deferred wages (unless he takes some court action in spain i guess). either scenario leads to barca not honoring their prior wage agreement but can justify spending cash on transfers. that seems fucked up

From what I understand it's the opposite. They did not agree to the deferral becoming payable when he gets transferred and that's why they prefer to sell. De Jong doesn't want this obviously. But it's all speculation since we don't have the contract and we don't know the details of the deferral. Barca wants to reduce his wages but if De Jong doesn't agree they can't do much. I don't think it's necessary anymore to lower them since they sold the TV rights. It's like 300 million in total and revenue from other activities should be recovering as well.

Romano is good on transfers but I wouldn't take his opinion on Barca's financial situation seriously. Football journalists know little about finance and it shows. A lot of articles concerning the financials of football clubs are trash.

it wouldnt make much sense commercially for the deferred wages to not be payable if a transfer took place though. that would mean de jong would be agreeing to a waiver of the entire deferred portion for a transfer that he doesnt even want. theres no way the terms of the deferral is such that he isnt entitled to it should he be transferred, especially in a scenario if the club is the one forcing him out. id say theres a possibility that he waives his entitlement to the deferrals if de jong requests the transfer, but so far this saga has shown that this isnt the case.
and although the official stance of barca is "we want de jong to stay", the reports are that de jongs wages are unsustainable for barca. if your player refuses to alter the terms of the original contract then the club should have no choice but to honor it. thats simple contract law in most countries and i doubt spain would be any different. barca currently seems to be doing everything they can to dishonor the agreement instead of dipping into their transfer budget to solve the issue.
and for what its worth, fabrizio romano isnt the only one reporting on this transfer situation or barca's financials as a whole. it seems like multiple reports are coming out saying pretty similar stuff, though i dont know if theyre all independent sources or if theyre just spreading the same news around

Financially it doesn't make sense to defer wages at all. Money now is always worth more than the same amount of money in the future. You're right that it doesn't make sense to not put in a clause that the deferred wages have to be paid on a transfer but mistakes like these are made. Barca is De Jong's dream club, he planned to stay there forever if he could. To be clear I'm not defending Barca here. Deferring wages and then trying to sell to not pay them is a scumbag move. Barca has treated their players very poorly. Depay and Koeman as well for example.

The problem is that football journalists don't put the financial difficulties in a proper context. For example the 1.3 billion debt number we see get thrown around is meaningless on its own. Apple has nearly 300 billion dollars in debt but nobody cares because they have the revenue to support it. Tottenham Hotspur has almost the same amount of debt but used it to finance their stadium which increases their future capacity to spend. In addition, I've seen articles make simply mistakes like when Barca refinanced their debt for a lower interest rate. Some reported this as a negative thing and new debt but refinancing is using new debt to pay off old debt for a lower interest rate. Nobody would refinance if it didn't save money. With La Liga there's the added difficulty of the wage cap, many of the problems for La Liga clubs are due to the wage cap. I'd expect some deeper analysis but there isn't much of that. There are exceptions to this such as the Swiss Ramble.

That Romano doesn't know how Barca is able to sign players isn't any surprising since in addition to the financial situation he'd have to know the wage cap rules for La Liga and how they apply to Barca.

Lewandowski to Barca is apparently a done deal for 45 million (+5 possible through add-ons). Will be interesting to see if Bayern replace him with a classical striker or go for some sort of false 9 setup with Mané/Gnabry. There are no real rumors for strikers currently but that might just be because they're focused on getting De Ligt.

Not sure Barca are being responsible enough with their money, especially with De Jong not actually wanting to join United. Raphinha, Lewandowski, re-signing Dembele, rumors about them wanting Jules Koundé...

I like how Leeds put in very strong penalties in the Raphina deal to Barca. If they default or don't pay on time, they will be stung with huge additional fees lol.

Chelsea finally get Koulibaly after like 5 years of wanting him lol.

Yes, lewa for 50 million is too much. He's 34 and only has a year left on his contract. Rapinha I don't know well but 60 million is a lot for a Leeds player. Not sure if he's worth that including wages. Dembele is fine though since they signed him for lower wages.

I dunno, their big issue that also caused Messi to go in my mind was the wage situation. Raphinha, Lewandowski, Kessié and Christensen won't play for free. They're also interested in Koundé, Alonso and Azpilicueta. De Jong hasn't left yet and doesn't seem willing to take a pay cut. With that in mind Dembele is at least questionable to me.

Yes, but you still need to make investments. The situation then and now isn't really comparable. Messi was on 100 million gross and reportedly agreed to a wage cut of 50%. That's still 50 million. Then you also had Dembele + Griezman + Coutinho who were on 20+ million a year on wages. For the wage cap you'd have to include depreciation and considering the transfers were all 100+ million you're looking at like 20 million per player per year. That's 170 million a year in wage costs for 4 players. Shows the insanity of the Bartomeu board... With their new policy Barca doesn't pay more than 10 million a year on wages per player so assuming he's on 10 million Dembele costs like 1/4 of what he used to. I don't think you can get a similiar quality player for the same price.

De Ligt is on his way to Munich now to complete his transfer to Bayern before he'll fly to the US to join the rest of the team there. We're in the middle of a huge CB domino this window.
