I get that thought, and it's probably correct, but my thought is that if we hadn't gotten them, we'd be in far worse shape. But who knows, maybe we would've gotten better strikers (actually that's most likely the case)

They could stabilise, make the odd savvy deal and be a lock for the CL. Given how the accounts work and whatnot they can do what they’re currently doing, but given how close they were to the precipice it seems I’ll advised to say the least. I thought they would do the same, re sign dembele, they have aubemeyang, find some good kids around, sign up some future stars. Maybe get in one signing. Just keep pushing for champs league and free signings for 1-2 seasons and boom your back then. Instead they seem to be "pay day loaning" by selling the tv shares to get lump sum of money to be in same boat in 2-3 years time.

That's at least a second promising big signing this window as long as it goes through.

Money now is always worth more than the same amount of money in the future. You're right that it doesn't make sense to not put in a clause that the deferred wages have to be paid on a transfer but mistakes like these are made. Barca is De Jong's dream club, he planned to stay there forever if he could. To be clear I'm not defending Barca here. Deferring wages and then trying to sell to not pay them is a scumbag move. Barca has treated their players very poorly. Depay and Koeman as well for example. The problem is that football journalists don't put the financial difficulties in a proper context. For example the 1.3 billion debt number we see get thrown around is meaningless on its own. Apple has nearly 300 billion dollars in debt but nobody cares because they have the revenue to support it. Tottenham Hotspur has almost the same amount of debt but used it to finance their stadium which increases their future capacity to spend. In addition, I've seen articles make simply mistakes like when Barca refinanced their debt for a lower interest rate. Some reported this as a negative thing and new debt but refinancing is using new debt to pay off old debt for a lower interest rate. Nobody would refinance if it didn't save money. With La Liga there's the added difficulty of the wage cap, many of the problems for La Liga clubs are due to the wage cap. I'd expect some deeper analysis but there isn't much of that. There are exceptions to this such as the Swiss Ramble. That Romano doesn't know how Barca is able to sign players isn't any surprising since in addition to the financial situation he'd have to know the wage cap rules for La Liga and how they apply to Barca.

Not sure Barca are being responsible enough with their money, especially with De Jong not actually wanting to join United. Raphinha, Lewandowski, re-signing Dembele, rumors about them wanting Jules Koundé...

Will be interesting to see if Bayern replace him with a classical striker or go for some sort of false 9 setup with Mané/Gnabry. There are no real rumors for strikers currently but that might just be because they're focused on getting De Ligt. Rapinha I don't know well but 60 million is a lot for a Leeds player. Not sure if he's worth that including wages. Dembele is fine though since they signed him for lower wages.

Raphinha, Lewandowski, Kessié and Christensen won't play for free. They're also interested in Koundé, Alonso and Azpilicueta. De Jong hasn't left yet and doesn't seem willing to take a pay cut. With that in mind Dembele is at least questionable to me.

Yes, but you still need to make investments. The situation then and now isn't really comparable. Messi was on 100 million gross and reportedly agreed to a wage cut of 50%. That's still 50 million. Then you also had Dembele + Griezman + Coutinho who were on 20+ million a year on wages. For the wage cap you'd have to include depreciation and considering the transfers were all 100+ million you're looking at like 20 million per player per year. That's 170 million a year in wage costs for 4 players. Shows the insanity of the Bartomeu board... With their new policy Barca doesn't pay more than 10 million a year on wages per player so assuming he's on 10 million Dembele costs like 1/4 of what he used to. I don't think you can get a similiar quality player for the same price.
