It's not a problem with the starting 11, except for the forward position. The problem comes with the subsitutes. Madrid sold all of their good offensive substitutes and didn't buy any. Now every game I know exactly who will come in from the bench. If the game goes badly - Asensio and Vazquez, if it goes well - Kovacic, Asensio and Vazquez. Also the age of the players comes into play, too. Modric 32, Ronaldo 32 soon to be 33, Ramos 31. All of them are key players who can't go full 90 for the entire season anymore. And here comes the fault of Zidane, he was too confident with his current squad and his younger players. He is doing what Wenger was doing for the most of his career at Arsenal... And the result is the same. The first couple of years it was understandable, because of the transfer ban. Now it boggles my mind. After 2 years of not spending, Madrid earns huge profit from transfers. Why ? If you are confident in your squad, at least keep it. Also his attitude towards Benzema is really frustrating.

Only real madrid fan can criticize a coach who got them back to back CL titles heh..

naw but cut him some slack. It's 10 games into the new season, third place in the league, looking good in CL.. there has to be a grace period for the first manager to win back to back CL victories, no?

Well I didn't say "Fire him"... I'm just pointing out what are his faults, in my opinion, and why the team is performing so poorly this season.

In the end it all goes to motivation I am sure. They wont give the final 5% in every game now that they won so much in the last 2 years. I hope perez gives him this year..

Now they lack depth and Ronaldo will not score 50 goals, as a result they lack goals, too. 3rd place is my prediction and probably quarter-final in CL, if the draw is good.
They should have kept Morata, or bought a forward.

Yeah they sell Morata who would have helped alot and replaced him with??? no one lol. Plus the ages as Prowler says, awful transfer business has put Madrid in this position now they are already 8 points adrift in the league without having played Barca or Atletico yet?
Of course he gets slack but he didn't exactly tactically masterclass his way through those champions league wins, Ronaldo happened. In the league last season they started better than this season but it also was still slow but he was never that far behind because Barca were awful and Atletico also started with a few draws.
Now Zidane needs to show better coaching skills here to get his players playing before the new year or he could be only fighting in one competition by then.

In some ways it might be even worse if they're in three competitions. If aging lineup and lack of rotation are the issues, the strain on the players is only going to get worse as the season progresses.

They did need a back up striker, that much was certain but few thought that Ronaldo would struggle in front of goal. I mean he obviously isn't the player he once was, but his goal scoring never seemed to diminish regardless of his performance on the pitch.

Lol Pande, captains pick draft order is ABBA from now on

How has Casemiro been doing lately btw? I think he was lauded as the player Zidane brought to a different level. Meanwhile Real's defence definitely hasn't been that solid this season. Is he in a slump too or is just the rest of the defence fumbling at the moment?

Let's not forget some games last season where Ramos or someone else saved Real last minute and got them 3 points, again and again. Meanwhile Barça was losing stupid points against smaller teams. Now it's the other way around, Barça isn't playing really great but the winning momentum is carrying them, while Real just loses against small teams.
8 points is not that much given that there are still 2 direct games to play AND we haven't even passed the dreadful Copa season from January to March where big teams have to play a game every 3 days for 3 months in a row. And last year Real got eliminated in the ro8, probably helping them a little in their title run while Barça just started losing points game after game afterwards (+4-0 vs PSG +3-0 vs Juventus).
This lead will probably melt a little in the couple of next weeks... Barça's schedule: Olympiakos, Sevilla, Leganes, Juventus, Valencia.

Barca are way better this year than last year, the team is balanced, playing better, have a solid midfield. Shoved messi into the 10 role so he can get the ball centrally and way further up the pitch. Valverde has taken Barca back to basics and it's working.
They also signed the best bargain DM in world football in Paulinho. I told everyone he was good and only went to China because Spurs fucked him over! 4 appearances (with one of those as sub) he has 3 goals and 1 assists as a DM! Putting legs alongside Biscuits is what barca needed and 4-2-3-1 is exactly how they need to play, especially when they have wingers who now know how to tuck in when needed. Only thing missing is Suarez is not in top form at all, but that will come back im sure, he is to good not to start finding the net again.

Nah Barça isn't better than last year. Last year Barça was good until they crumbled around February, but at their top they were better than this season. This season they played a few good games, maybe now they're suffering the high amount of games (with the international qualifiers in the middle), I'm still hopeful.
While the team is more balanced defensively, offensively it's lacking someone on the left wing. Right now it's Messi behind Suarez, Deulofeu (Dembélé) on the right and no one on the left, only Alba (who is amazing but he can't play 2 roles). It's heavily focused on the center, the same as when Barça struggled after their 2011 CL win. It works against smaller teams, and it works overall because they're super talented, but come Spring I hope they can show something else for big games.
Paulinho isn't a bargain just yet, it's still 40M€. I admit I'm surprised, he seems to be super hungry and he does the box to box Touré and Keita were doing before, which helps a lot. With the full team though, he will not start games. Suarez is indeed an issue, Messi can't score everything alone. Deulofeu and Dembélé aren't really killers and Iniesta/Gomes/Rakitic don't score that often (only Paulinho seems to be able to create chances every game xD).

Lol, Rudiger at the second goal for Roma... Probably forgot that he is no longer playing for them.
