So when watching NHL lately, I have really wondered about some ref calls regarding embellishment. How can it be that in a single situation Refs call embellishment for player A against player B and at the same time also call a foul by B against A. Either A made a dive or he was fouled by B... But how is it called both more often than not? Don't get it  It happened again twice yesterday, once in the Habs game I watched live but also saw it in another games stats. | ||

It's sort of two different situations that happen A. A player outright dives looking for a call when nothing illegal happened. This is the one that's punished in soccer with a yellow card and indirect free kick, but it's rarely called in hockey (I don't know if I've seen it ever). B. Something illegal does happen to the player, but he has a theatrical reaction well out of proportion to the contact, or clearly was trying to buy the call. This is the one that's punished in hockey, both players will get the penalty. In soccer they pretty much call these as fouls because technically they are, and the embellishment doesn't get punished. It basically seems to me that each game covers one of the scenarios, but neither does a good job covering the acting completely. The difference I think it's a product of the structure--in hockey it's easy to give equal offsetting penalties, which is not really possible in soccer (one team has to get the ball). | ||
