Well, if by very good, you mean the best holding midfielder of the last 10 years, then yes, he's very good, xD.

The fact that he was RM best midfielder until Modric can be explained by the fact that their midfield has usually been their worst line in the last 10 years.

Also this german team that became world champions are Pep's product through and through. Same with the spanish team that dominated before and was a product of Pep's barca.

Its also not his fault that Lahm didnt work that well at the 6 in the national team. On the Alonso transfer i tought first it is a bit weird but the more i think about it the more it makes sense. He gives Schweinsteiger and Thiago time to recover, can play in a 3-3-4 and help Alaba. Also he brings physicality in the midfield and is still a pretty good player. He feels a bit like Van Bommel back then: Past his prime but still good enough to play a good ball and a nasty dude that knows all the tricks. Nothing long term but he has still one or two good seasons left if injury free. A pretty cheap one, the last price i read were around 8 - 10 million and i think the rumomr that he makes 10 million/year are wrong. Real will not miss him as a person i guess (if i remember correctly he was the last one of the mou era) but whenever Real sells a good central midfielder i get that Makelele picture in my head.
