Kobe could barely "will" them into the playoffs when Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol were on his team. All this horrible sports narrative, eye of the tiger, THE LOOK, Will to Win garbage is just that, garbage. No one can just will a team to win, they have to play the game of basketball at a high level on a consistent basis as a team.

I doubt the Lakers even contend for a playoff spot. Kobe is in his late 30s coming off back to back seasons where he suffered major injuries. It's hard to see him being the player he was before he got hurt 2 years ago, let alone anywhere close to where he was around 5 years ago when the lakers were winning titles.

Jeremy Lin and Boozer, while they may be fairly big names and solid pieces, probably aren't enough. On top of all this, they had a coaching change and lost their best player not named Kobe. They have no depth and the western conference is incredibly challenging. The Spurs, Thunder, Clippers and probably Rockets would all be the best team in the East (this coming from a Pacers fan.)

depends on tyson...but they also have felton :S.... parsons on that team is going to be like 1st/second option which he shouldn't be. dirk is going to dirk. but there's a good chance that mavs going to be better....but there's speculation everyone on the rockets board that we are still trying to upgrade PG/PF....so we'll see what happens. haven't been the greatest offseason i gotta say. would give my left nut to have dragic back...

No Parsons won't, Dirk/Monta would be the 1st/2nd scoring options before him.

Is Lin even a solid piece? He's in the bottom third of starting point guards, I'd imagine. Boozer's about the same as far as starting PFs go (though if he starts at small forward then lol, that's even worse), I certainly wouldn't call him a solid piece for anyone with playoff aspirations, especially in the west. You could hide him like chicago did with a good surrounding cast and great coaching but the dude hasn't really been valuable since he left Utah. I mean I guess they could be decent "pieces" if their contracts weren't bad compare to the value they give.

Portland could probably win the east, too.

Boozer's a decent big man passer and post threat, his defense is just average at best and in Chicago he wasn't worth his contract. He's a decent piece for 3 mil though.

Lin's a fine regular season point guard. may not win a lot of games but the playing style is exciting and they can sell his star profile and stats. the LA market is huge with number of fairly rich chinese folks who will turn up to watch lin.

Of all teams, the Los Angeles Lakers are not in desperate need to sell themselves. They literally just penned a ridiculous tv deal. This also has nothing to do with the conversation (making the playoffs).

His shooting is really streaky but I think having Beverly on his heels last year which made his minutes inconsistent hurt him a lot, he played well at the start when Beverly was hurt. If he has no one threatening his pt like in nyc he should put up good numbers. And his defense really isn't that bad, Beverly's just a lot better and Lin was paired with Harden.

the marvs are obviously better than the rockets now, even with Tyson playing half as well as when he was defensive player of the year. And the lakers are not ganna make the playoffs, west is too deep. Kobe would have to go 35 a game the entire season for them to have a chance.

I'm not saying he's the worst point guard in the league or anything, but no team should be happy that he's their starter.

You are saying he's the worst starting point guard in the league, the dude's defense sucks, not fast enough, not strong enough, not tall enough, and mostly not skill enough for any team, not even the lowly Lakers, the guy's too old and doesn't work hard enough to get better, and the next year will be his last in the nba.

I'd definitely take mavs over the rockets assuming both stay healthy. Mavs have way better coaching and guys who'll listen to it. Rockets have lost a lot of talent/depth in Asik/Lin/Parsons, whilst keeping a terrible coach, immature/lazy stars and only getting Ariza who's no longer in a contract year.

Tyson can keep Howard below 20 points a game, and nobody can guard Dirk in the rockets, but then again it's not like anyone in the world can affect dirk's high release point on his shot, 40 years old dirk 50/40/90 ? dafuq?, it's basically a match up nightmare for them.

Kobe willed the Lakers to the playoffs in 2006 and 2007 when they had completely shit teams -- Kwame Brown and Smush Parker were starting. In the Western conference, no less. That's an incredible achievement. He also willed the Lakers to the 2013 playoffs, carried them almost singlehandedly through the 2nd half of the season.

I don't think he can do it this year, but also I wouldn't be surprised if he did. There's a certain mysticism about Kobe this year, which makes things all the more interesting.

You have a group of people who say: "Kobe's overrated, he has 3984598345934 miles on his body, there's no way he can recover from 2 season ending injuries at his age and still be the same player."

Another group says, "if anyone can come back from these injuries and defy father time for a few more years it's Kobe."

I have a feeling the truth will be somewhere in between. I still think he'll play well and probably average 25. Will he be able to shoulder the team and still be a huge 'we need this win' performer? Unsure.
