Lol, I would take Nelson over Harris and Felton anyday. Specially at 2 million. And who cares who starts? Ellis will have the ball most of the time and they will just find the other guard that fits in the best with their offense to close out games. The Mavs were the 2nd most offensively-efficient team last season, and Carlisle will find a way to make these pieces work.

If anything, I don't like both Harris and Nelson signed, I would have gone for a more offensive 6th man of the sort but they have a lot of versatility. Of course everything rides on Chandler and Nowitzki staying healthy.

Pretty sure Calderon and not Ellis was the big driving reason for their high rated offense.

Because he could hit 3's...he didn't do anything special there. And I looove Calderon.

Will they automatically be as good? Of course not (jose is a really good shooter), but my point is they have a better team overall this season. And I trust in Carlisle.

edit: I still can't see them making the finals though lol..

Kind of. What always riles me up is when the college admins say they need to cut men's wrestling or track if they had to pay. I mean, ever consider cutting things people don't actually play and they go around campus looking for recruits? Like at Pitt it was rowing. Question for the experts here...

Wouldn't it be smarter for the Cavs to keep Wiggin and try to get Love next season? I'm not really familiar with NBA cap space and all that so I'm not sure if keeping Wiggin will prevent them from signing Love next season. But to me Love, Kyrie, Allen, and Miller sounds like a disaster defensively. Even though it will take time for Wiggin to develop an offensive game, I think he could contribute in a big way early on the defensive end.

I feel like for a player, defense isn't something you can develop as much as their offense. It's either you have it or you don't with a combination of IQ, athleticism, and tenacity. Wouldn't the Cavs be giving up a big asset just to have Love for a season earlier? I just think it makes more sense for the Cavs to wait a season. Not to mention that Wiggin can possibly be mentored by the best player in the game right now...

Situation kind of reminds me of Melo before he got traded to the Knicks. Didn't the Knicks trade away all their good assets just so they could have Melo earlier? As a result the Knicks lost all their good supporting cast...

To my knowledge, they can't keep Wiggins and sign Love next year because to do so, they would have to exceed the salary cap. They can exceed the salary cap if they trade for Love and then sign him because they would have what's called Bird Rights which allow the team signing a guy to exceed the cap in doing so, albeit at the potential payment of the luxury tax.

Can anyone elaborate on this?

Also, I absolutely agree on Melo to the Knicks. The Knicks finally are done paying up for that, and the Heat are still sending assets to the Cavs in the LeBron sign and trade.
Who's the bigger scrub, the scrub, or the scrub who loses to him?

The Knicks-Melo thing is a little different because it was pretty clear that he was going to sign with NY after he opted out, the future for Love appears much more open.

I don't know if Cleveland would be for sure over the cap next season (and therefore unable to offer Love the 'max'), but very likely. Teams can resign their own guys even if they are already over the cap, but have to use one of the exceptions (midlevel, biannual etc) that have very specific restrictions to offer anything other than the minimum salary to other FA's at that point. This is what was going on in Houston with the need for specific sequence to sign both Bosh and Parsons (also lol at his recent comments). Bird Rights include, and generally are mostly talked about, with regards to a teams ability to offer an extra year and slightly higher % raises to their own free agents than to other teams.

cleveland better have some magical defensive rotations or they are still over a barrel with love or not. they don't have any cap space even without him to sign a good center.

by the face value message gilbert and co are sending out, they are ok with being patient. well, be patient for one more year and hope your young assets appreciate through playing with lebron and trade for a marc gasol or something.

atm i think the rep on wiggins is that he lacks the killer instinct finishing touch/mentality but his value could rise quite a bit if he just plays 30 games getting buckets. get some nba conditioning and improve that finishing touch. it's not like minny are in a hurry to dump love atm so that can wait.

The problem many people are having is saying Wiggins could be an elite defender. Sure he could. But A.) Do you see that NOW? and B.) If he doesn't then what?

I've seen some of his summer league games and Wiggins looked like shit. He'll probably be much better after a few months in the league but he really is looking like Harrison Barnes 2.0. If he stalls out a year or two from now someone is going to be blamed for Wiggins not developing enough. I don't even know why people think Lebron is going to mentor the kid as if it's a given just because they play on the same team.

Speaking of that. Why do people expect Lebron to make personnel decisions in Cleveland? Do they not recall how his last stint as Cavs "gm" went?

So am I the only one who would let Monroe walk and slide Josh Smith to the four where he's actually an effective player?

people play these things but its just that these fringe sports are not self-sustaining like basketball or football. what you have is the argument that paying players would cause the schools to eliminate scholarships (and equipment/finances) to these fringe sports that cant make any money on their own.

i mean its kinda like the real world, the people who make money have to fork over taxes to help those that are poor and need assistance.

no

well it depends. During the season it was rumored that Monroe's agent said they'd be asking for the max/near max, and Detroit doesn't need him at that price. The longer he goes unclaimed the lower his price goes down though, so it really depends on how much he gets paid. And if the rumors are true and the Kings really want Josh Smith then you could trade him and keep Monroe as a starter.

what if they trade for love and wiggins becomes a star on a shit team because they can give him the minutes and the cavs struggle on defense and gets destroyed in the finals this year and then love was like oh shit this team cant actually play D, see ya later suckers im going to the toronto raptors

with love, i still dont think cavs are title threats against the west unless their defense really improves.

as for the mentoring part, why would lebron NOT mentor the kid? it benefits lebron more if wiggins develops asap rather than later.

btw the last playing contract of michael jordan to the bulls is being auctioned, didnt know he made 33 million in his last year with the bulls. thats some crazy number for a player.

1997-98 Chicago Bulls Salaries
1 Michael Jordan $33,140,000
2 Toni Kukoc $4,560,000
3 Ron Harper $4,560,000
4 Dennis Rodman $4,500,000
5 Luc Longley $3,184,900
6 Scottie Pippen $2,775,000
7 Bill Wennington $1,800,000
8 Scott Burrell $1,430,000
9 Randy Brown $1,260,000
10 Dickey Simpkins $1,235,000
11 Robert Parish $1,150,000
12 Jason Caffey $850,920
13 Steve Kerr $750,000
14 David Vaughn $693,840
15 Keith Booth $597,600
16 Jud Buechler $500,000
17 Joe Kleine $272,250

Of course the rim protection needs to improve if you sign Love. They don't have it right now even with Wiggins. Love has already said he'd sign with Cleveland long term if traded there.

Wiggins might become a star eventually, but NBA titles are not easy to win. You only have so much time. People love to think about "potential" and "what ifs" but the reality is you maximize title chances asap. This is like the question I asked before where the option was something like a 50% chance to win a title every year for 2 years or a 20% chance to win a title every year for 10 years. You pick the 50% chance every time.

as for the mentoring part, why would lebron NOT mentor the kid? it benefits lebron more if wiggins develops asap rather than later.

It isn't a given that he will. It isn't even a given that Lebron knows how. Let's not assume that if Wiggins becomes good it's because of Lebron. This is the same mistake people make about the San Antonio Spurs which is why they are misevaluated so often.

i mean i've never seen someone go back on their words /s and love wouldnt be the first.

im not talking about lebron telling wiggins "hey bend your elbows more on your jump shot" type of mentoring. if that type of mentoring worked, the charlotte hornets would be the best basketball team in the universe by now.

there are a lot more things that he can mentor wiggins. off court distractions, how to play the game properly, there are literally a thousand things that not only lebron, but the whole team, can teach wiggins.

sharing his experience is the biggest thing. wiggins will have different perspectives on how to play on the basketball court, it may make him a better player, and it might not, but i think it'll save him some time on figuring things out on his own.

Jordan still is the highest ever paid NBA player for 1 season. Also Pippen had a super long contract that was shitty pay (he and Jordan both hate Jerry Reinsdorf and Krause for the shit they pulled).

idk how much mentoring helps but with lebron on the floor wiggins would not be asked to be the first option. however, he has to improve on his finishing touch in this situation. and their offense is a bit questionable if wiggins can't make a three to save his life. he'll only be useful on fast breaks and defense.

their situation is just that, whatever happens with love, they are not going to win a title next year. so take the long view of things. if they make an all in move with the impression that they'll win the title in the next couple years with love on the team, i'm not sure that'll end well.

Worth noting Jordan's first contract was 7 years/$6 mill.

I'd say he earned the pay rise.
