On the topic of millionaires exploiting athletes, have we talked about OKC's #29 pick Josh Huestis yet?

Thunder and Huestis agreed to sign him to their D-League affiliate (25k/y) for a year so that they can develop him the way they want, then sign him to his 2 + 2 option rookie contract. Basically lets the Thunder develop this guy on D-League wages instead of NBA rookie wages and the associated cap hit.

Well he did agree to sign the contract as you say.

Not sure what the issue with two consenting parties entering into a contract. Did Okc abuse it's disproportionate bargaining position?

well the issue is why would someone sign a 25-30k contract when they are entitled to a rookie contract worth millions over 3-4 years?

That's almost certainly what happened. --Edit: Seems like it was a reach pick and that OKC probably had a verbal agreement that Huestis would accept a deal that amounts to about what he was projected to get anyway with possible additional organizational inroads. This is a pretty blatant violation of the NBA's rules though so we'll see.-- If you recall they've been only giving their rookies 80% of the scale (the minimum allowed) as well. Maybe if the NBA had a meaningful union they might not allow the owners to cry poor while taking half!!!! the $ just for being involved.

Question for non-'Muricans. How do sports without a draft handle the transition to the pros? Specifically I'm curious about how like European soccer handles players moving from their development centers/houses/schools to the big-time. Just generally speaking does it give the athlete more of a say than "well you're not offering me a fair deal, so I will just forfeit years of playing"?

That sounds like a pretty big loophole. I wouldn't be surprised to see other teams complaining.

People get to the auditions of teams. If they get selected, they play at age-restricted teams (u15,16,17,18,19,20,21, whatever) and work their way up. I don't think there are any colleges with sports scholarship programs. They don't have any reputation whatsoever either. Performance at reserves league is more important for European soccer teams. Players spend their teenage years at u-squads while American basketball-hockey-football players take part of their high school/college teams.

Mavs additions are all so good this summer. Aminu and now Nelson, after getting rid of Lewis, are all great moves IMO.

Probably missing a few but:

Lost: VC, Dalembert, Calderon, Blair

Added: Parsons, Aminu, Tyson Chandler and Nelson

I'd call that a damn good offseason after taking the spurs to 7 games. Nelson may not be that great but he's still semi-productive and a vet in a position where it looked like Felton might start.

Nelson might not be great, but he's not Felton. That's a big plus.

ugh so true :/
If he gets Felton's minutes what a steal. Aminu is a great defender too.

People always bad mouth the NCAA by default, but it's the NBA and NFL that set up these abusive age limits. In nearly any other field (software development, music, writing, tennis, esports, etc.), if you have the ability, you can go out into the market and realize your true value, regardless of age. These basketball and football players are ready to start playing professionally, but are denied because the billionaire owners of these pro sports organizations prefer the free promotion and development that college athletics provides.

These pro sports organizations do not face ordinary free market competition. They are monopolies and effectively have an antitrust exemption from the government. All it would take is some small pressure from congress and we can have these age limits tossed out.

Once that's taken care of, then things become very simple. If an athlete is good enough, he can become a professional right away. Otherwise, it is his choice to participate in college athletics as an amateur. He made that decision knowing in full the benefits and drawbacks of being a college athlete. I'm certainly fine with college athletes getting a cut of licensing revenue. However, we do not want to put our institutions of learning in a situation where they are bidding for high school talent by having boosters offering kids cars and fake jobs for $100k/year or whatever madness would happen under Jay Bilas' suggested system.
