Whose spot would they take who made it in now? Dallas looks to be better so does the Wild. Someone has to drop off then but none of the teams in the West have gotten worse. Theoretically the Avs will have a much worse year because Varlamov probably had his career year, so without the insane save % on the amount of pucks he saw theyll probably drop down to 8th-9th which is where the Canucks might sneak in if Ryan Miller is the 2010 version, not the 2014 version. But if the Miller plays the way he played for the Blues the last 2 weeks of the regular season then the Canucks actually could sink below Yotes or Flames.

I agree. That's why I said a chance. I think for the next year or two the Central will be providing 5 playoff teams.

San Jose is probably the only playoff team that may not make it next year. if they do collapse then I could see Vancouver getting ahead of them. Probably Vancouvers best chance is a SJ collapse/GM blows it all up

SJ missing the playoffs, that's one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Even if they traded Thornton for picks, they'll make it, and regardless it's pretty clear that Thornton isn't going anywhere. I would be very surprised if it's not the same 8 western teams as last year that makes it.

I can totally see Vancouver in the playoffs. They've made some pretty good moves, not the least of which being de-Torting.

edit: They can finish ahead of Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Nashville, Phoenix - and then it's a matter of maybe Anaheim and Colorado aren't really the real-deal yet (they were on the receiving end of all good fortune last season), and then maybe San Jose over-reacts to losing to a good team and wrecks their lineup at some point before the season starts? I don't know. Just saying that it could happen.

I like dallas' moves. vancouver has a decent shot though. if miller provides average goaltendning and the twins are at least about 70pt players, they should be alright. they werent far off last year, and colorado could easily slide out.

i wonder how closely the NFL is watching this....

https://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/steve-moore-now-seeking--68-million-in-todd-bertuzzi-suit-133149964.html

had the NHL, Orca Bay, Bertuzzi et al settled this in 2004 it would be long forgotten by now.
as the trial date approaches and the trial moves forward we're going to get to watch Bertuzzi knocking Moore unconscious 1000 more times.

My money is on that too. I just think SJ is the one most likely to implode. Its in there nature to disappoint. Missing the playoffs is the only thing that core hasn't done on the choking list.

It happened largely due to family matters but it is also due to fact that this could be my last chance to win the Stanley Cup.

I don't think the newest Maple Leaf understands the game of hockey if he thinks Toronto has a chance at winning the cup...

it might be a team of chokers but by not panicking right now while talking shit about a 'rebuild' while they do nothing except move up some young players to more ice team Wilson is being smart. Blues overreacting by going after Statsny and then overpaying, thats panic.

The Sharks will be in the post season again. They're too good of a team to miss it. They even have the horses to win their division.

And yes, Wilson is a good GM. He doesn't go full-retard like so many of the other GMs in the league. He's very patient and picks his spots. He does mess up from time to time, though.

God. Fucking. Damn it.

our new pickups are absolute trash. Robidas is decent, but komarov and frattin? Come on, it was a terrible year for us

Hey, Leo did what he was supposed to do that season. I was upset when he went to the KHL and if there is one person I'm glad to have back it's him and he plays the way Randy wants. He does his job and he does it well.

lol I'm switching my allegiance to the blues until the leafs fire nonis and carlyle, losing mcclement is the last straw for me.

of all their moves, why's that your line in the sand??

it's too depressing watching mcclement go for 1m to carolina and then you have komarov signing for 3m, yes leafs mcclement's not great but seriously he took 1m to not play in toronto. it'll be good for his career playing less minutes (he was overplayed as a 3rd liner/pk/defensive zone man this year), but the leaf's are making really dubious decisions. the only saving grace would be that someone mentioned our top 6 is just way too weak which is why we overpay clarkson and komarov to enforce, but jeez that's such a long shot. hopefully it works out but in the mean time i'll watch the trades from the blues

Jay was one of our best face-off men and he's one of the guys who turned around our PK. One of the biggest reasons we were leading the league in the category and he's gone for 1mil. That's pretty funny. Leo fits well. For 3mil, meh. I sure did miss him, but yeah that money could be used elsewhere.

Yeah I *get* why he's not here and why he's not a good fit (playing 1st/2nd line minutes on 3rd line for under 2m/year), but it's embarrassing having clarkson and komarov being paid so high because they're a "good fit". they *are* a good fit, but you're alienating the other players like bolland and raymond, when kadri/lupul/kessel/jvr decide to not show up, and replacing them with people who will never get 15+ g in a season, and you lose mcclement who was our saving grace the year we made the playoffs (we were 2nd in PK at some point?)

You're dreaming if you think Anaheim or San Jose are missing the playoffs. Dallas is also a much improved team this year.

The nice thing about this much competition in the West is that eventually good players will have to end up in the East since there's no room in the West :p

well, to be fair, I dont think anyone expected such a spectacular collapse of the Canucks. Going from 2 established goalies to 0 for almost no return, having their best players simply collapse statistically, have their defense turn into a bunch of crippled incompetence. Sure they were in their Calgary Flames post STanley Cup final mode but between Torts and Gillis the brutality and suddenness of the collapse was pretty shocking.
