It just occoured to me how up against the cap they are. $5m in space with just 14 players signed. Yeesh. they will dump everybody but their core and theyll be back with a vengeance in 2 years. its LA's turn next year anyways ![]() Bowman did a pretty good job of cutting expenses and retooling the team after they won their first cup. This also speaks on how solid the core of this team is. this is such a great model franchise for the rest of the league. maybe someone from edmonton could intern there for the summer or something!

also damage report just got released. Bishop had a torn groin that was bad enough that it risked seperating from the bone with continued play. Johnson broke his wrist too.

He will probably ask for a 25-30 mil 5-6 years contract though so if he doesnt go for the hometown discount he will be gone too. the strenght of their 3 cup winning teams was the depth down the middle. I think they should keep that trend going.

Johnson broke his wrist too. I agree that Sharp is the likely candidate to shake loose. He'd free up nearly 6MM in cap space on his own and would make a very useful addition to another team looking for a dashing, veteran left wing from Winnipeg who can put in 20-30 goals while sleeping with the other veterans' wives. Plus he's only signed for 2 more seasons so that makes taking him on more palatable. Naturally, when I think of teams with cap space to spare and a lack of veteran forwards, one team in particular comes to mind =P

Also Vermette sat a bunch down the stretch so I really don't think they're that high on him he won like 66% of his faceoffs in the finals and scored some gwg after coach Q sat him in the playoffs. I think that was a good coaching move since he had a very strong finish after being scratched. They were so stacked down the middle this year again that its pretty hard for a guy who would be a good #2 center to supplant Toews or Richards on such a loaded top 6... If they dont make a run at him I would be surprised since he will probably be the best center available in free agency (unless Im missing someone ).

I'm gonna get crackin on a new thread later this week. I'm not particularly in the know about the draft if anyone wants to do a write up for the first round and bigger names or something. re: hawks, they will absolutely trade Bickel if they find a sucker, but he's getting paid a fuckload for a 3rd liner who might break 30 pts. Versteeg and Sharp are far more tradable assets. I think those two return decent assets.

Not my favorites, but Scott Darling is the only player from the hockey team near me to have ever started in a Stanley Cup game. I don't like the hawks all that much, but the fact that a past RiverKing gets a ring makes me happy.

Scares me because Sather is sly enough to throw in a shitty defenseman or convince the Oilers that 50 games isn't a small sample size and somehow get the 16th overall pick out of Edmonton. Fucking Sather. Do not trust him. This was a look a blogger had at some UFA goalies (plus Talbot and some others). I still think 16 is too steep a price for something unproven with one year of contract left. In this draft, that pick is pretty much a sure thing (unless the Oilers keep it and draft Jason Bonsignore).

Unless it were an ass draft, I would not trade the 16th for him heads up. I don't think he's quite that good. Schneider got the 8th just a few years ago. He's better, was better back then, and had a larger sample size. I wouldn't call the 16th a sure thing necessarily, but I think anything in the top 20 generally has a good chance of getting a decent NHLer. It's got significantly more value than picking at 27 or whatever the Rangers would be doing if they had not traded the next few decades of first away
