But I fear they may not, their showings are pretty bad so far aside from Bjoerndalen (except from today). What happened to Svendsen these days, he was a monster not too long ago.

Russian figure skater Evgeny Plushenko has withdrawn from the Sochi Olympics with an apparent back injury. The 31-year-old was due to perform in the short program on Thursday but appeared to hurt himself in the warm-up, landing awkwardly after a jump. He informed the judges he would not be able to perform and left the ice http://en.rsport.ru/olympics/20140213/724424051.html

I haven't really been paying attention to the speed skating side of things. Also, wow, Germans are killing it on the golds so far.

Shani Davis was the biggest favorite on the men's 1000m and Heather Richardson (forgive my typo in the other post) for the women's 1000m, fellow American Bowe was the second biggest contender. They all fell way short of the podium, in those fancy new suits that were totally untested in official races. At the very least we know that two time gold medalist Davis is not known to be a choker. Netherlands had a similar experiment with plastic strips on the suits a while back, but that was abandoned because they did not help and were possibly harmful.

Now I'm curious just how much time the skaters got to try out the new suits beforehand, and just how much testing was done outside official events. Seems really silly to just pull out new suits for such a big event, but hey what do I know.

It's easy to dominate a discipline when you have the only few professionals amongst a sea of semi-pros. Just look at Rowing in the last Olympics, UK and NZ were the only 2 country to subvention their athletes so that they could be pros and they got almost everything :
