While there is a salary cap, there are very obvious ways around it; if this wasn't the case there'd be no way the Nets could pay $100 million in salary. The Lakers are one of the wealthiest franchises in basketball, I don't think the salary cap will deter them from pursuing free agents. From what I understand, salary cap would prohibit the Lakers from signing over the limit, but there are no provisions for example, if the Lakers sign 1 max level free agent (which they have the cap room to do), let's say Carmelo Anthony, and then run a sign and trade with Minnesota in 2015 to get them Kevin Love. That'd give them 3 max players (Kobe, Carmelo, Love), and put them over the cap (obviously), and it'd all be legal. This is assuming that the Lakers can find a team willing to sign and trade a max level player to them, but it has happened numerous times before in the league, and the Lakers front office seems pretty good at striking good deals with other teams. I wouldn't be surprised to see 1 max FA come in 2014, and then they get a 3rd one in 2015. I can 100% guarantee that the Lakers will go as far over the luxury cap as it takes them to build a championship team. Further, the Lakers have never in their history been a bad team for more than a year or two at a time. They have always found a way back to contention and nothing indicates that it won't happen again. I think the Lakers will be OK this season, pending Kobe's form when he gets back they're definitely a playoff team. They have the cap room to dramatically improve next year, so if they're a 7 seed this year, they can be a top 4 seed next year, and in the playoffs you never know what can happen... anything in the top 5 is a realistic contender in the league (last year the Pacers were 1 win away from being the finals and they weren't even a top 3 seed in the East). Sure I'd love to have seen Kobe sign for a veteran's minimum to give the team more flexibility, but I don't see how any human being in their right mind could fault Kobe for agreeing to a deal that's actually fair. A player should be paid what he's worth, and Kobe is definitely worth $25 million, all things considered.

I really hope this whole thing goes on Shaq'tin a Fool and we get to laugh about it all over again.

A player should be paid what he's worth, and Kobe is definitely worth $25 million, all things considered. In the NBA, trades are based upon salaries more than players. If you are the salary cap, you can not make an "uneven" trade, within, I believe something like 10%. I think Kevin Love's Salary in 2015 is something like $16 million. So, the Lakers will have to trade the Timberwolves $16 million in salary to obtain Kevin Love's. So structurally, it is, nearly impossible. Consider: a. Lakers have Kobe at $25 b. Lakers sign Melo to $21 c. Lakers now have 10 roster spots (minus their first and second round pick) and about 10-12 in cap space At this point, the Lakers would need to obtain 16 million dollars in contract and trade them to Minnesota. It's unlikely that they'd sign any player that the Timberwolves would trade the 7th best player in the league for (although, I suspect he will opt out in 2014/2015.) It's not going to happen. On the other hand, I think the contract is fine and that the Lakers will land on their feet. Just not that way.
