I had gotten my friend to pick my starter and he went with Torchic.
I'm actually pretty pleased with how much of my Pokemon I've named, tho most of them are passing the buck to other friends and saying, name my shit.

Well, I'd understand that probably no one likes Treecko, but I would have thought that Mudkip and Torchic were "cool" choices. In real gen 3, all 3 were good. Mudkip was better overall for speedrun purposes and the most competitively relevant, but Torchic and Treecko were fine. Honestly, gen 3 probably had the most consistent starter quality of any generation to date, both in terms of aesthetics and actual gameplay.

I went for Mudkip as my starter (named him Grimmles) and called myself Dr. Acula. Not sure of who I want for my final party, but I'm thinking of throwing in a Raltz and a Aron in there and seeing what happens. The Aggron will be dropped for a Tyranitar when I get the chance to get my hands on a Larvitar. (Hope I picked the right version to get Larvitar...) Don't know what I'm going to fill in for my other three slots of my party though. I think I have a spare Larvitar I have lying around with egg moves too. I can replace Stealth Rocks with Earthquake since you likely don't need that. Gimme your Friend Code (I'll also add it to the OP). We can trade some time later this week. Larvitar is Pokemon Y exclusive btw so no you won't find them in Hoenn. Do I need the National Dex to even receive Larvitar in a trade? I like just started the game. I only have a level 9 Mudkip! Would be willing to trade Mudkip for Larvitar. That sounds like a fair trade no matter how you slice it. If you don't want a Mudkip then I don't have much to offer haha. Gyarados and Sharpedo are pluses, due to Gyarados' strength and Sharpedo's increased surf speed, but by choosing your starter correctly they aren't incredible pickups. Breloom is pretty cool. I've always been a fan Manetric in general, but he has added value in Water Region: Extra Water edition. Wait is there a wrong way to pick my starter? I thought in third generation all of them were viable choices. Well, I'd understand that probably no one likes Treecko, but I would have thought that Mudkip and Torchic were "cool" choices. Actually minus well poll for this for popular opinion: Yes. Anything but Mudkip is wrong.

No, you use any Pokemon it so long as you have the right badge for its level. When you look at its status screen it just will have a ??? instead of the Pokedex number until you get the National Dex. I really don't need anything... I've pretty much finished my entire Living Dex except for a few Legendaries which I'm just too lazy to catch. Send me a Zigzagoon so I can collect your Trainer ID for Lottery draws or whatever. I have boxes full of flawless Pokemon I've bred and I wouldn't have offered it if I was going to let it bother me. In original Ruby/Sapphire wasn't Torchic the way to go cause it could pretty much solo most gyms and the E4?

Yesterday it was for making a one line post (there's been what 20-30 one line posts since then, 0 warnings) and today it was for double posting / the mods not liking my "multiple life story" posts even though that's how lots of LLL people post. It's like warning Ketara for something everybody else gets away with is a running joke at this point. To be fair though, I do double post a lot.

Being able to solo most gyms is not unique to Torchic, and soloing the E4 is irrelevant when you're required to get Groudon/Kyogre anyway and they can do that.

Mudkip was the easier choice to just breeze through the game with. Even the electric gym was ezpz cause of that added ground typing once you evolve him.
