I've been noticing a trend at my gym over the months. When I go in the mornings there's a lot of older women doing bikes/treadmill. When I go in the afternoon there's a lot of guys doing free weights and rope thingy. No time I go seems to have women doing weights. There are a handful of regular women that I see doing some light dumbbell stuff and some girls on smith machine squat(Why do people do this?) but that's about it. Just find it pretty strange. I wonder why such a divide has happened here. Is it the misconception that doing weights will make you into those guys with tree trunks for arms?
I've never seen a woman doing any form of deadlilfting.
He wanted to go sit down at a local grease joint. I don't want to spend ten bucks when I have food. Not to mention that he's always complaining about spending money.
Goddammit, clown9 is happening and I need to rely on LR thread
@scip, I know you said that you are missing some cards, but, the list I used should be one of the first mage decks on heartgpwn, it was like top500 dragonmage or something, could narrow the search to control decks as well.
What's the issue with the squat machine? Maybe I didn't understand well, but from googling pictures isn't that the support used to help you start your squats without breaking your back if you fail?
Req, what do you mean by "he has a bad week"? In my previous job I remember a coworker asking me to sit on a bench on the way back from lunch to talk a bit, and she ended up on the verge of tears pouring her issues with management and how they basically tried to pressure her into quitting (dunno how it works in the US but the company couldn't just fire us (they did end up using my lateness as a pretext when I didn't quit though) so they tried to get a bunch of people to leave with "voluntary redundancy" (apparently that's a close thing?) as they were short on work or something). Didn't make the management treat or better nor resolve her upcoming unemployment issues, but it did help her shoulder it to talk about it with someone not-management from the company. Then again maybe you don't really care about the guy and you're not a muggins like me.
He and his wife were trying to get pregnant and had another negative, then he had to put his cat down, and then on Saturday his iPod got stolen out of his car. Rough week, I admit.
I do care about the guy, I consider him a friend, but I had a long weekend and didn't feel like dealing with it. I know how selfish that sounds.
Smith machine holds the barbell straight so you aren't actually doing a proper squat(ie.weight isn't being stablized by your body, instead the "machine" is doing it for you). You basically aren't doing a free weight barbell squat if you using that. Squats are a rather complex exercise that use a wide array of muscle groups in a big range of motion which the smith machine now discards by forcing a specific motion. Power rack is what you want to use to squat heavy weights alone safely.
It's garbage for squatting. It teaches bad form and doesn't properly strengthen all your muscle groups that a squat should be targeting. If your gym doesn't have any kind of power rack(Mine has an older one without adjustable heights ) then you should find a new gym lol
So the machine doesn't just give you something to rest the barbell on before you start, it supports it all the way and "holds" it so you just kinda touch the barbell and decide how fast it goes down? After checking some more pictures it looks like I've got power rack and smith machine confused. Didn't know both existed. And I don't go to the gym I do stuff at home. I hold my dumbbell like a kettlebell when I squat. I haven't done so in 3+ weeks though, I should do some the days I'm not doing abs but... I guess the heat eats away at my motivation.
Also Wave I wish you to become this in a few years. Maybe mordek too? I dunno, mordek rarely talks about that. Edit: actually that can be Soniv 15 years from now too I guess. You've cut your hair, man.
Smith machine you "roll" the bar backwards to unlock it then it's fixed in that it can only go up and down along the bearings from that position. You then "roll" the back forward again to lock it. You prob just confused the two. Power rack doesn't hold the bar, it merely has "rods" that you can adjust() where if you fail the exercise you can drop it on the rods to get out. Two completely different things
I'm still waiting on Mordek to post a video of his daughter playing Hearthstone. A whole market waits for that adorableness man.

Man I fucking love that video. The head swoop at the end always gets me.
Currently my hair is getting pretty long, might cut it tonight.
obviously some women lift weights and do real squats but yeah i think the whole society thinking being muscly is making you look like a man thing is pretty discouraging. Like you can find a lot of jealous people posting on pictures of ripped women telling them they look like a man / men want curves etc etc. which sucks. Even some intelligent women i know would be like "i dont want to lift weights because i dont want to get bigger" also i feel like its probably more pressure. like if a girl wants to start strength training its pretty intimidating to go over to the free weights section where all the large men are and ask to work in on a set on a bench where she might have to rack/unrack like 90lbs between each set kinda thing. so yeah cultural inertia and misinformation mostly but hopefully its changing with things like "strong is the new skinny" and stuff.
Basically the Smith Machine is bad because it enforces a bar path, rather than your body forcing the bar path. In theory a straight vertical path(so, not one of the even more garbage Smiths that have that stupid angled path) is a perfect squat, but in practicality the bar is making slight movements as you move your hips to complete the lift. Good bar path takes a concerted effort in training to learn, especially as you move up in weight, and that effort won't be there if you're in a Smith having it done for you, lowering emphasis on keeping your upper back tight, on pushing your knees out, and on changing your hip/lower back angle to make sure the bar stays straight.
For standard benching it's even worse because proper bar path is not a straight line, so now not only is the Smith removing your need to do things such as keep a tight upper back and tucking your elbows properly to keep proper bar path, but it's actively working against them. However, the same thing that makes it terrible in those cases make it an alright tool for using the exaggerated elbow flare for more concentrated chest involvement, because the forced bar path and stabilization of the machine take stress off your rotator cuffs.
There are modern smiths that have a free-moving bar path, so it's just a counter-weighted bar with easy to rack pins, which are actually pretty solid machines for a lot of movements.
Women in the gym is a wider societal thing, although I will say I see far more of them actually lifting within the last few years than I ever did when I was younger. Seems the wave of instagram-famous women taking gym selfies of their asses with random motivational quotes is having an influence on would-be cardio bunnies and getting them to try out lifting instead, maybe it just hasn't made it to South Africa in force yet?

Jeff you wouldn't know scum if he came up to you wearing a striped v-neck, dot-pattern pants, and a cravat, carrying a 7-inch vinyl player and punched you in the face while sipping his Starbuck's latte
