This is by far the best sentence in the history of mankind, I can only hope it's existence is carried on to future generations, other species in the universe for the remainder of time immemorial.

Was bored tonight so I decided to watch another Miyazaki movie I hadn't seen (Castle in the Sky). Midway through I realized I hadn't seen Totoro in a while. Technically my first ever exposure to anime, my little brother got it as a birthday present when he was 7 or 8. We didn't quite know what to make of it but it kinda grew on us. This was a dubbed version. Anyway, apparently Disney got the rights to the movie and re-dubbed it some years ago and upon comparing the two just now (it was damn difficult to find the original English dub), the new one is fucking awful. Nostalgia goggles aside there are little things they just kinda removed for no reason---I mean the fucking Catbus just sounds like a regular cat. I'm probably going to show the guy this movie someday and I wanna be damn sure it's the right version. + Show Spoiler + And don't get on me with the sub>dub argument. When you're 8 you don't want to watch movies in another language.

It's generally considered that Bebop is the one that breaks the generalization to prove the rule or some such. The english dub of Bebop is outstanding. Onto the topic at hand. This is not the 1990's dubs haven't been terrible in fucking ages. Only hipsters and people who's last appreciation of an english dub was dbz growing up can really believe that dubs are somehow terrible in this day and age. Having said that, some dubs are better then others. Dub voice actors for the most part can't do moe(one or two exceptions whose names escape me at the moment), and some localization just makes mistakes(girls und panzer for example). Of course it's leagues better then it used to be in the age of early Funimation, Central Park Media, Manga Corps etc. At this point, subs are for recently released titles only and even then if given the chance I'll wait for licensing just because dubs allow me to pay attention to everything without reading text. And yeah, I'm calling bullshit on the first person to claim they never miss anything while reading subs.

Why even bother watching it? Just put on music. White girls can't do moe so dubs will always be inferior. There are exceptions like Cowboy Bebop and Black Lagoon but generally it's more a case of a dub being "good" because it's not dog shit. When you look at a show like Monogatari with an absolutely stunning female VA cast you realize that currently there just isn't the same talent in Western voice acting to do the show justice. I would have thought with games becoming so big we'd get better at it but it seems like games generally follow certain stereotypes of their characters so the actors don't learn a wide range. Almost all the triple A male actors are just gravel voice protags. You lose out on so much character watching dubs over subs for most shows.

+ Show Spoiler [all that gravely batman voice guys] + No good western talent? You got jokes right? Mary McGlynn, Monica Rial, Tiffany Grant, Lisa Ortiz, Crispin Freeman, Justin Cook, Richard Epcar, The motherfucking Bosch. Just off the top of my head. and you want to tell me they've no talent? Now having said all that, I could see a case being made that we need more actors in general but that's an issue with Anime being again fairly niche in the western market. At least as far as people buying licensed shows are concerned. Remember ADV had to pretty much quit and sell everything they had to funimation due to mistakes they made. A good dub, you miss little to nothing because a good dub is built around giving you the experience the show intended. Easiest example is the work put into the dub for Lucky Star. A lot of the jokes do not work if you don't have the right voice actors doing the bits because the entire joke is that this character and that other character are played by the same person. A poor dub would of ignored this, in the old days they'd of not bothered with properly working it out. The english dub get's it right and took the time to make sure the jokes worked. Of course it delayed the English release but it was worth it and having watched both versions of the show it works great in either choice you make be it sub or dub. In the end sub vs dub is a matter of preference these days not quality. It urks me because they've worked incredibly hard to license, localize, and make shows work and to see that work dismissed as bad outright is just infuriating to me.

Everytime I have a discussion about this topic it seems like the one side gets irrationally mad. I'm not saying that all dubs are bad, there are really goods dubs out there. Just for the most part the subs are better. It could just be the level of the western market meaning they don't get good enough people in most cases. It could be that voice acting is just a more open profession in Japan(It's incredibly hard, even harder than acting I feel). I don't know, all I know is for every really good gem they put out there's a host of others that are just subpar.

I had a look at the original dub and, well, yeah. The delivery is at least twice as fast as in the French dub and it's cranked up a whole other level. However, if you haven't seen it then it doesn't matter because the French one gets the point across nicely. On the other hand, there's clearly a shortage of French VAs for both anime and series. It's better when it comes to movies (and then again, depends which movies, it's more of a "we got dedicated VAs for a bunch of American actors so as soon as we leave that we're back to the derth", save for stuff like GitS I'm pretty sure most animated movies use the same cast as kids' animated series and animes), but overall you watch 2 series and you get 5 voices that are exactly the same between both (not just the same VAs, but the exact same voices). Kids' shows tend to have atrocious delivery too and that's what we mostly had at that age (soaps too but I didn't watch that).

you realize that currently there just isn't the same talent in Western voice acting to do the show justice Now if that doesn't mean what I think it means, do explain. To me I take it to mean exactly what you said. Western voice actors don't have the same level of talent as there Japanese counterparts. If that's not what you meant I'll concede but I don't believe I misread you at all. I'm not angry so much as tired of hearing every time it comes up that dubs are still at the original Akira English release level of terrible. They ain't.
