I mean, with divorce rates being at a high, I'm not sure many people even know how to do one relationship, let alone many so there's that too (yes yes probably most of it is infidelity or incompatibility the former of which is completely lacking of any respect for the partner and the latter being people too eager to get married in the first place). Basically most people suck so do what you want to do with your life while respecting the not sucky people.

See and that's the thing, I know there is a woman out there who I want to have children with and wake up next to every day, but there are also some women who I connect with on the same level, but to a lesser extent. It's a strange feeling to have this wanting and need for monogamy, but know of multiple women that would also be willing to share a smaller part of my life with. I will absolutely be PERFECTLY happy and more content than I ever could have imagined with this woman I know, monogamy and all, it just seems to me that with all the cheating and infidelity in the world, polygamy would be a more open discussion. But as it stands you are either a slut or a playa. A species of hypocrites we are. @teut Yeah that makes sense. Like it never made sense to me when a girl was like I wish you'd be jealous because it shows me how much you care. Uhm what? It's strange but yeah, you really have to apply a woman's or man's logic to understand your partner, but how can one do that effectively without ever knowing what it's like to be the opposite sex. It sounds like you just want close friends? I don't really understand why that's an issue of monogamy. Just because you've settled down to make a life with one woman doesn't mean you can't share your life with other people. Relationships aren't some kind of cage where you have to fit your life in. If that is the case than that relationship just isn't constructive. As for infidelity I doubt polygamy would change any of that. While there's numerous possible combinations at the end of the day it's still forming a contract with an individual or group. If you stray from that group/individual without the knowledge and consent of the group/individual it's still infidelity. A lot of the desire of infidelity isn't so much about sharing your life with someone else so much as just going a fling with none of the responsibility that a relationship requires. Anyway I do think one day we'll have laws for polygamy but I wonder just how hard that is. I'm sure someone with a law background knows more than me but I do wonder how you define it. Is it a contract between individuals or a contract between a group of individuals? Can a person that only wants to be with one member of the group be added to the group? What are the laws surrounding the property than if the person only wants a relationship with 1 member and not others? Just feels like there's so much more to consider, not to mention how do you protect the members of the group from abuse(Cultesque instances). edit: I also feel a lot of divorce is often because of people in an already failing relationship trying to "fix" or keep their relationship through marriage. These people are so afraid of being alone that they'll force the relationship to work even when it doesn't. The inertia of starting a new relationship is just too much for them. So obviously they get married and it works for a little bit but soon the cracks form again until they get divorced. It's not so much the construct of monogamy that is failing as much as it's the individuals inability to deal with a relationship. Having a non-monogamous relationship wouldn't change that failing relationship.

Well it depends entirely on whatever the law evolves to in regards to marriage and polygamy marriages. Also, depends on whether it's polyamorus. If it was a polyamorus society then seeing as it's multiple relationships each one would be treated separately. (the one person wanting one other person makes no difference seeing as that's what the relationships are and effect none of the other parties involved. Unless of course you start to mix the relationships to be 3 party relationships (if that was the society I'm sure marriage/partnership laws would accommodate all parties onto the registry). Property laws are completely different though. At least in English law it depends what kind of property you own. If you own a freehold property (fee simple absolute in possession) and are married, you most probably own a joint tenancy whereby on your death the estate passes to the remaining joint tenant (wife/husband). A 3rd person if this was the case would just be another person as a joint tenant. If, however, you owned a tenancy in common each of you owns a share of the house (can be contributing share if paying mortgage, or a resulting share if you paid some of the house fee etc). If one of you were to die your share is passed onto your heirs (will). This would similarly be as simple as adding another name and share to the tenancy. If you bring another person into your property for a relationship and they contribute nothing they own 0% of the house. It also depends on what was implied through actions/speech (for instance if i say you could get the house but don't put your name on the tenancy and you can prove that then the courts assume tenancy is implied (although you most definitely need to be contributing to mortgage payments for that). Abuse is abuse and is illegal so law enforces that too?

edit: There's also instances where say 2 of the parties have a child but a third party raises the child. Now if the 2 biological parties split and also split from the group what happens in a custody situation between the 3. I know currently it tends to favour the biological parents but I also think that's an incorrect mentality. I think there has been instances of this between grandparents vs parents for childs custody but then then there's still a case of blood ties so not sure how it'll work. My head is starting to explode just thinking of different scenarios lol. Holy shit if we ever do have a society with multiple different forms of partnerships(Monogamy/Polymany etc.) it's not going to really make for some interesting cases.

It's already hard enough in the current relationship setup. I guess the same thing does happen even within non polyamorous isolated communities anyway. Maybe I just think in general there needs to be more ways to protect both parties in a relationship. It saddens me hearing news of abuse that could maybe have been prevented with more safeguards. edit: There's also instances where say 2 of the parties have a child but a third party raises the child. I imagine it will just be joint custody between the parties or mutually agreed for the person that raised the child to continue raising that child but have visiting rights etc.
