Butterfly is the most demanding if you don't know the stroke and if you don't have the abs for it. Kicking in Butterfly doesn't come from the legs, but rather the abdomen, you end up moving your whole body like a dolphin. This style of kicking is the most powerful, and in fact during the dive and flipkick for Freestyle, swimmers will usually Butterfly kick underwater until they reach the surface since it gains the most distance. Freestyle (and Backstroke, for that matter) kick is used to keep your body streamlined. All the power in Freestyle comes from the shoulder and upper body, which is why your arm form (hand shape, pull motion, etc) have a huge effect on your speed and power. Breaststroke is a completely different monster, as the exact mechanics for it are completely different from all other strokes. It's more of a "round" stroke, whereas the power in the other three comes from lines. This makes Breaststroke easier for people with bad form, as it doesn't require main strength to go quickly, but rather form and speed of movement. Freestyle is the easiest to be fast at, since most people don't have the requisite ab/core strength to have the same amount of speed. Free is also the easiest to teach, since the motion for "adequate" Freestyle is much easier to pick up than any of the others, in my opinion. If you're just getting into swimming, you can use our old high school warmup (which I now struggle to do since I'm way out of shape): 1x 200 Free break 10x 50 Free break 5 x 100 Free break 1x 500 Free break 1x IM Once you can do the Frees on the :45 (so :45 50s, 1:30 100s, etc), you should be in decent shape. | ||
