To the questions of Belgian relation: if I kind of remember it correctly (17th century history and onwards is kinda vague to me), the Dutch were jealous of our beer, fries, chocolates and waffles, therefor they tried to raze everything related to it, then trying to mask it as a religious seperation.

But for real now, I really don't remember how it went. The gist of it is that we felt mistreated, teamed up with the french speaking region to create an unworkable situation under the approval of the UK.

Sounds pretty common during protestant reformation.

Uh, Belgium proper was separate from the Netherlands until 1815 when it was given to the Netherlands.

Before that, it was part of the Duchy of Burgundy, became the Spanish later Austrian Netherlands, and then was annexed by Revolutionary France.

Long past the Reformation/Counter-Reformation.

Yes it's long past the catholic vs protestant problems. First there was the "Beeldenstorm", roughly translated to Statue storm, destroying cathlolic objects. Then came the Golden century of Holland, effectively seperating literature, language subtleties and alot of cultural aspects that are still apparant today.

Hmm, a lot of those could be seen as continuations though, European history is like that. Aside from the Revolutionary French (god a what a joke, Napoleon is rolling in his grave over how much a laughing stock France has become...)

And yes, alot of the revolutions happening around that era were all inspired by the French Revolution, just like the Belgian one. I believe Russia's revolution was also inspired by it and if I recall correctly Prussia also had one.

I was more going along with the Reformation/Counter-reformation, but that works too.

I haven't done any serious study of history in years, used to love it until I got to College..

The entirety of modern history can be traced back to the French Revolution. It is the seminal event of the modern era.

It is so important like you wouldn't believe.

Yeah history is interesting but also extremely important. It's what makes us able to realize how the world shaped up the way it is now, and hopefully we're able to learn from past mistakes (sadly we aren't)

There's just so many sources for so many different regions from so many different regions.
Also, I've been a bit sour lately that we, as westerners, only learn about the western history and african/asian/ocianian/south american history has been completely disregarded, like they never had one.
And then one day you realize: holy shit, there are so many more people with different cultures out there than just ours. I know it sounds a little bit existential, but I do believe it's kind of a mistake in teaching. Sure you hear the news and know there are othe regions, but it's the history that makes the current things relevant imo.

Might just be me, but my public high school definitely included a World History course that focused heavily on Africa and Asia, and my college history courses were anything but vanilla European stuff (not that there's anything wrong with vanilla, or Europeans [mmm]).

Are you in high school or college? Because if the latter, I'm quite surprised. There's been an extremely large reorientation of college history departments towards Asian history (given the rising relevance of East Asia), and African history department presence has been growing consistently.

Wrong.

But it was pretty important up until the 1800s. It was for a long time the center of the world economy (it's where endless quantities of Andean gold/silver [mostly silver] was dumped until their exhaustion in the 1800s); that and the Indian Ocean basin trading.

if we're talking pre-spanish south america, everything not recorded by the church has been destroyed or passed down orally. I've taken 5 or 6 classes on south american culture and society depending on whether you count the maya as south american or as north american. its very common in some areas more than others to learn about these things.

I'm talking about my time in high school. Didn't follow history in college, I did biomed/biochem (am now on an as of yet undetermined hiatus though)
We learned a good bit about Europe, Russia (with the whole panslavic ways, also explains alot why it's acting the way it is today imo, even though grossly oversimplified), USA revolution/post independance and the imperialist era.
Sadly, the big only focus was on the West, with very little about Africa, Middle East, Asia, etc. but I do think our history was dense enough so we couldn't just scimp over it and see other parts of the world. Especially with only 2h/week of history classes.

The casters right now are mostly just fucking around, but it's still kinda funny if not that informative.

Summit is kinda like HSC for Dota, player/casters, with Gang Beasts inbetween matches, also, token Black^ guy.

I once sat in on a history course at a us college
it was about ww2
it was incredibly amusing how the guy talked about everything as if the americans were relevant at all, such bias much wow
i finally left when he started justifying the nukes on the japs

as a side note it's pretty funny how both in the us nor here in best continent was there ever a word uttered about the asian part of the war. except of course that one time when the wonky japs crashed their planes on people, but other than that...

Sounds like a really horrible WW2 course if it's about US WW2 History and they didn't talk about the Asian front.

The US was much more involved in Asia than they were in Europe.
