Before that, it was part of the Duchy of Burgundy, became the Spanish later Austrian Netherlands, and then was annexed by Revolutionary France. Long past the Reformation/Counter-Reformation. | ||

Why would you assume I'm Flemish Tolkien? lol The actual seperation of Holland wasn't super interesting imo, it's the problems that led to the present day between the different language regions that are much more interesting. We basically make something impossible work. I have no problem with Wallonia (maybe just the fact that I can not speak decent French for the life of me), but there's been so many economic/political/social issues over the years that we kind of also made it in the best democracy in the world. One where we slowly start to realize democracy actually doesn't really work (that's why we can't form governments or decent governments with decent incentives at least). And our nation is going haywire at the moment: every monday (for a month now) public transportation has been on strike, 15 december it's national strike because the reforms are just too brutal. And for a little bit of personal opinion: I feel like it's only politicians standing in the way of Belgium truly working, because us, as Belgians, have probably the most experience in the world when it comes to getting dominated by other civilizations. We just roll along and just kinda want it to work now. The shit from last decade has made me strongly apolitical, so I've kinda stopped investing into learning ALL those different parties with all those different subtleties and all the different hierarchies. | ||
