I think my biggest pet peeve with zombie media is they all take place in a universe where zombie media doesn't exist. In the The Walking Dead they are like "Holy shit, what are these things?!" If a zombie apocalypse broke out today everyone would be like "oh holy shit zombies." Also if you guys haven't read World War Z you should read World War Z. | ||

Yeah, that seems about the correct level of awesome. To clarify though before the craze I generally thought zombies were just the less threatening undead you had to kill to get to the higher class mummies/vampires/liches, althrough I do remember some fun zombie survival WC3 custom maps. They seemed fine that way. But then for reasons my tiny brain doesn't understand pop culture completely exploded with zombies and I tired of it pretty quick. I don't actually think that any of the other spooky monsters have a chance of taking nearly as much spotlight in the near future. Zombies just seem to hit a lot more buttons than other undead monsters for some reason... maybe it's the combination of our increased ability to render gore and interest in survivalism/apocalypse? Since they're mindless they fit a survivalist setting a lot more than most of the other undead and most of scaring material I see in video games seems to borrow the bloody gutsy aesthetic. I remember driving through NYC at night a couple of years ago and a radio station was randomly playing Orsen Welles' old broadcast of Dracula. It was pretty amazing during the time that I could tune in. | ||

Then again Bram Stoker's Dracula is one of my references (along with The Black Company) about how to make a character charismatic without telling you (s)he's charismatic or describing him/her with praises (even in disguise). | ||

The original vampire stories are monster versions of aristocracy and how they treat the commoners as possessions/food, much like how Frankenstein is the monster version of terrifying scientific advancement and zombies are the monster version of how faceless, mindless individuals seem harmless but as a crowd will wear you down and make you one of their own. Pretty much all of the classic monsters are allegories of some sort. But they're also fucking cool. Vampires are supposed to be haughty, refined, and beautiful to the point that you want to love them and be loved by them (in fact, mind control and persuasion are some of Dracula's original powers), but they're also supposed to be violent, vicious, and monstrous once that veneer falls away. Buffy and Angel do a pretty good job of showing that, so do the Dresden books. Even Alucard in Hellsing pulls it off when he's not bathing in someone's blood. | ||
