U.S. curriculums are decided State-wise, yes? Apparently the Brits have some fucked up system where you're done school at 16 or so and then some people go to college at 17. But she was saying that in college she had parent-teacher interviews which is seriously fucked IMO. | ||

maternelle/petite section/grande section (equivalent to pre-school then): starting at 3, some do put their children at 2.5 primary education called école primaire ("primary school", elementary school): 6 to 10 secondary education, comprised from: collège (junior high): 11 to 14, ending with a junior school certificate lycée (highschool): 15 to 17, where you choose one of several paths (basically literary degree, social sciences degree or scientific degree). You end high school with the baccalauréat (baccalaureate) the year you turn 18 (which is the majority here), equivalent to high school degree/diploma in the US, and apparently "A level" in the UK? Secondary education years' names are a bit dumb, as it goes "sixième, cinquième... seconde, première, terminale" eg. "6th, 5th... 1st, last". I guess it's for the "how many years until you're done [eg. ready for the working world, at the time this organisation was designed]", but it's still weird and makes less sense than the way you call yours. Then you have "superior education", which you call college. I think college precisely refers to what we call "fac", where you have mostly lectures and projects and a lot of autonomy as to what you do, whether you go to class, etc. but there are several other things (business schools, engineering schools, technology degrees/certificates, etc.). We usually call the whole thing "le supérieur" or "les études supérieures", superior being the litteral translation but the meaning is closer to "beyond [the mandatory education]". There are "technical" alternatives to our highschool degree ("bacs techniques") but they don't lead to many jobs, usually in the industrial sector and not necessarily with good pay or advancement opportunities. They are more often chosen by pupils having difficulties in the "standard" high school than by vocation. | ||

My elementary was K-5 (though a private school nearby was K-6) middle was 6-8 High school was 9-12. | ||
