Generally the first time to start with in DMing is determining which bucket the people you're DMing fall under and crafting the entire campaign to that end. The distinction between whether the players are there for the casual "fun story, dumb roleplay, and generally lighthearted stuff" or the "tryhard minimaxing game mechanics" people.
For the first group the focus of the campaign would usually be trying to present interesting environments, stories, and situations that allow the players freedom while you as a DM should spend more time in world-building, character creation, and the ability to have a general setup to allow the players to do whatever they want to do within the constraints of your world.
The second group will be far more interested in challenging, unique combat scenarios that are well thought out and believable. Here encounter design is paramount with the story serving mostly to tie together various interesting encounters. Play this as a set piece battle "against the players"

Group is probably the former category.
Edit: hi Wave.

Hector hard mode is pretty fun. Serra good waifu, although Priscilla probably better. Sacred Stone is OK, but if you played 7 you will find it too easy. It's also VERY similar to 7. Why not try Path of Radiance? I've been playing a GBA emulator on my phone. Could try and look for a DS emulator for my phone (doubt it) lol. So that pretty much means only FE 6/7/8. If anyone has any good suggestions for other good GBA games besides Fire Emblem's and Final Fantasy's, I'm all ears. Also been reading a crapton of Warcraft books/comics after the announcement of the live action movie. Finished "Blood and Honor" (my niqqa Tirion), "Lord of Clans", and "Ashbringer". Got the trilogy about the NE's vs. Legion next, and "The Last Guardian" also. Personally anticipating when I read LG since that's what the live action movie will be about it seems. You can consider FE6, or try your mileage on FE8. Also have you played Yggdra Union? I personally found 6 to be really frustrating to play. It has some of the worst map design in the series, definitely the worst lord in the series, and as the first game in the series to use the 2-RN RNG, they didn't scale units well to the new RNG and low-hit units are way worse than they should be on paper (part of what ruins a lot of the Axe users in the game).
That's true. 6 is pretty frustrating to play. But 8 is pretty pointless unless you are a die hard fan of the franchise. 8 basically has no redeeming quality at all (compared to 7), whereas 6 is at least connected to 7.

I haven't played D&D since like middle school, where my friends and I really didn't know wtf we were doing. But my usual board game night people are interested but also egging to have me be the DM and I really don't know where to start. Help of any form is much appreciated. Arigato~
The role of a DM is to empower the players to do what they think would be cool and have fun (while still having fun themselves). As Kupons says, this means figuring out if your group is more "I am Galstaff, Wizard of Light," "I have a +9 Knife of Slaying Ogres," or "Roll to see if I'm getting drunk." Then you tailor what you do in the campaign to that. If that means constant combat that's technical and challenging, make compelling encounters and go light on story/description. Maybe that means lots of mystery and intrigue (which is super difficult, but also fun). Maybe that just means being silly and random and that can fit in a world too. /r/rpg often has a lot of good DM stories and recommendations, as do shows like RollPlay (you can learn a lot from Neal, regardless of whether or not you're a HUGE fan of his style) and Critical Hit (podcast I've heard is good).
One of the best things I've heard is that a DM is a worldbuilder first, storyteller second, and rules arbiter third. I interpret this to mean that you flesh out a sandbox for players to do whatever they like (regardless of the rules: go for awesomeness first), to tell a compelling story (whatever that means for your players, see above), and then to help with the game mechanics overall.

Think Yango worked out it was really efficient to buy it instead of packs.

How are so many of you bottlenecked for gold? I think I'm a very casual HS player (prob 80% non-arena, 20% arena) and I've racked up ~3K gold atm ready for G&G. I didn't spend any monies for Naxx either. I just do dailies and make a net gold gain on the majority of my arena runs. Are a lot of you losing gold on arena?

Well, I play very on and off, and so I just haven't played in a long time, and even when I did, I didn't play for that long. So I never really accumulated any amount of gold

I buy packs. I lose in Arena whenever I play but started saving up since blizzcon and at 700 gold. I can get up to rank 5 in constructed but suck so bad at Arena. Maybe I'm just bad at this game.

went 7-3 with that mage list wave

Nice gj. Yeah lately my arena runs have been better but I'm not completely consistent so I guess I just won't play arena until Gg drops, and I'll just save up gold (have 1.1k atm) from quests and constructed. I was real lazy about doing dailies for over a month too so I could have had way more saved up. Probably shouldn't have spent the 900 dust I had as well but I really needed the cards I made (2nd prep /lore/spirit wolf)

Arigato~ DMing a campaign is about being a storyteller - but not in the traditional sense. You can't just railroad your players from one story point to the next (though some might not mind it if they just enjoy combat and dungeon crawling). Your goal is to create a place for the players to forge their own story. You give them challenges and force them to progress or die, but in the end you're not a narrator, you're the goal. You set up the board, you set up the world, it's up to them to make their place in it and force the story to go forward. So while it is your story, it's more that you're uncovering it and changing it as they go forward, more than you are just telling it to them.
The rest of the minutiae is secondary. Rules can be bent, numbers can be handwaved. If your players are challenged but having a good time, and so are you, you're doing it right.
