isn't it a thing in tabletops where you character is only OP if the DM lets you be OP?

I'm only OP in the sense that apparently my rolls were absurdly good. Soniv can vouch.
I already have an idea as to how I'm going to play him though which will make him incredibly fun and not spotlight-hogging or OP in any way. (no sarcasm intended)

Has Asmo even confirmed how stats are determined?

I tend to prefer point buys over dice rolls.

What that means?
I didn't know (or even consider) there were other ways of doing things so I guess if I was premature in my creation in any way I suppose it could always be nixed.

Different DMs do all sorts of different things for character generation depending on the level of power/variance/flexibility/etc. they want.

Some well-known methods of ability score generation:

Dice rolls - standard is 4d6 take 3 highest for each stat, roll all 6 stats and then assign to each attribute as you see fit. Even for just dice rolls, there's a lot of variation (some DMs allow rerolls, some force you to roll the 6 attributes in order, etc.).

Point buy - everyone starts at generic attributes (all 8s or all 10s, depending on system) and a pool of points you can use to buy attributes. The amount of points given can control the power level of the party as a whole (whereas the above method results in significant variance in ability scores between characters) This gives players the most control over their character's ability scores and guarantees that all characters start on even footing, but also has the most room for players to munchkin.

Dice pool - this is one I hadn't heard of before Pathfinder, but is actually an interesting cross between dice rolls and point buy. Basically, the player has 24d6 to roll for their attributes. They can roll between 3 and 9 dice for each stat (and must roll at least 3 for each stat). They assign the number of dice to a particular attribute before rolling it, and take only the highest 3 dice rolls for that stat.

Elite array - I don't think I've EVER seen a party that actually uses this, but it's in the game, so I may as well mention it--basically you get fixed scores of 15/14/13/12/10/8 to assign as you see fit.

It's funny how we've talked multiple times about how people don't like alignment because it restricts your roleplaying in certain ways when we've never once had a discussion about methods of ability score generation when ability scores tend to have a lot more restrictive influence on how you roleplay your character and are relevant way more often.

A little late on the strange train but he's my favorite and I have all my dads old strange comics. Cumberbatch does not seem strangey but he's a damn actor. So he can change how he seems with practice. He'll do fine. As long as the director makes sure his appearance works well I trust cumberbatches acting talents to portray strange.

I think it's because ability scores are better defined than alignment, and where they are poorly defined, it usually doesn't have much in-game impact. Like, Charisma does double duty as "looking good" and "being a good speaker"... but you never feel like your high Charisma forces you to be a good-looking demagogue, because the skill system compensates for that.
On the other hand, if you're Chaotic, the only impact that has on the game is nebulous (with some specific exceptions). And since the concept is so ill-defined, everyone argues about it.

Darnit PX, I can't use your farm anymore, literally. It won't let me. Possibly as I quit the guild to try out some privateer activities with some folks(it didn't work out, they was not the brightest coin in the chest ya know) You'll have to allow family access or something. Ya know unless you stabbed me in the back which I guess is possible but unlikely.

Damn, I mean it's good but I really wanted an excuse to use a betrayal gif. My goal is to continue finding a proper privateer guild so I can feed you delicious materials. Hopefully the next group will know when to cut and run and why a galleon is shit without a proper crew for it.

I don't know anyone who plays DnD and my schedule is so messed up that I can't promise always being there. I just talk a big talk. Plus my character would probably die quite quickly, with having a giant hero complex and all.

Attack on Titan is awesome. Watching legend of legendary heros right now and it's quite good. Other good ones are: claymore, psycho pass, sword art season 1 only. And umm forget the others.

Watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes instead.

if you roll a natural 3 you put it on constitution every time with the explanation that you were born with a genetic disorder making you frail. then you use a wish or blessing from a god/powerful cleric, to cure you of the disorder to put your CON at 10.

it also can let you get away with the background of: your village never had the heart to tell you that you couldn't be a knight because of your health, so they all pitched in as much money as they could from the harvest in order to buy you a set of chainmail as a going away gift so you could live your dream for as long as possible.

I'm with Soniv in that choosing while allowing more creative control and balance makes this a little less interesting and challenging. There were a couple of things I rolled during character creation where I had to think, 'well how the fuck does this fit with my character?' And I damn well am going to try and make it all cohesive and make it all work.

Still gonna wait on confirmation from Asmo as to whether or not I'd theoretically be able to keep my stats/background type stuff.

Dude, you don't even have a dump stat, there was nowhere in your character creation that you should have been worrying how to fit it in. The most hilarious characters are when you have to deal with a -3 modifier to something.

Apparently my DnD character is gonna be OP as balls.
Looking forward to this

isn't it a thing in tabletops where you character is only OP if the DM lets you be OP?

I'm only OP in the sense that apparently my rolls were absurdly good. Soniv can vouch.
I already have an idea as to how I'm going to play him though which will make him incredibly fun and not spotlight-hogging or OP in any way. (no sarcasm intended)

Has Asmo even confirmed how stats are determined?

I tend to prefer point buys over dice rolls.

fuck point buys, that's so much less interesting

Atleast with Point Buy i can make my character not a blithering idiot after failing to read because of a nat 3.

simple, don't roll 4 1s

I wasn't talking about the main stat stuff. Besides you're just jelly of dem rollz.
Whass mean dump stat? Like if I would have rolled a 5 Str I wouldn't be able to lift a weapon or some shit?

It probably wouldn't be that bad lol, but that's the general idea. Your dump stat(s) is the one that you care least about and would put your lowest stat roll in.
