I don't get why most people caught in these arguments try to act like they're different when we've all been full on shitters in the GD threads for months on end. I was more making a joke about #shittymathwar but i guess its not well known/even a thing outside of my friends.

If you don't give people a starting point they tend to stick close to their comfort zone or toward particular tropes. The alignment is a tool that allows you to define a character's philosophy and motivations in a straightforward manner that doesn't involve writing a 3 paragraph theology/philosophy treatise. I don't know why you seem to equate having a starting alignment to having everyone not the DM know about it. Typically I don't even let the players see each other's character sheets and any information known about each other's characters should be shared vocally in-game. Well what ended up happening one time was, that one our players was CE (unknown by the players), but pretty much every time he did something out of alignment, the DM would make a weird face and go like "really?", sorta ruined it. Generally I prefer alignment not be part of character creation, and have people sort of make assumptions based on origin story. I guess the problem is what you mentioned, is that DM's tend to treat alignment as a behavioral prediction system and less so compass of belief/morality.

Yeah, this whole alignment discussion just convinces me further that I don't really like alignment. I liked Exalted's approach which basically just gave you a good framework for a writing a backstory and then prompted you for your character's overarching goal/motivation. IIRC they're actually getting rid of motivation in the next edition of Exalted but it was actually something I really liked. If I played DnD I'd probably just throw my hands up in the air and make every character NG or TN. Just seems like more trouble than it's worth.
