You xan argue that the rest of the story is a bit shounenish and I won't disagree with you, but to say it is not a Gundam series is extremely far fetched. I don't think you have a good concept of the underlying themes of UC Gundam. "Friends separated by war forced to fight against each other" is not a central theme of any of the original Gundam series. The main protagonist and antagonist in 1979 Gundam are Amuro and Char. They hate each other right from episode 1 and continue to hate each other for the entire series. The main protagonist and antagonist in Zeta are Camille and Jerid. They hate each other right from episode 1 and continue to hate each other for the entire series. It's even not as simple as that, Jerid takes a backseat to Haman and Scirroco later in the series, both of whom Camille hates and never tries to make friends with. It's a theme that you see with some characters in some Gundam series, but is rarely the primary theme. The main theme of Gundam, in general, is that it's about war. Unapologetically so. People die in Gundam series. The most lawful good characters do awful things in Gundam series. Even the most evil character has redeemable qualities. In Gundam shows by the end of it there are winners and losers, and at the end the losers are often almost all dead. It has a very down to earth, realist, often depressing feel to it that you just DO NOT GET from the sidestories. Whether that's a bad thing or not is up in the air, but they are NOT the same kind of show.

In Zeta Gundam Four is introduced in episode 17 and dies in episode 21, and is largely not talked about for the remaining 29 episodes. They are not what the show is about. Yet she was mentioned in every single suvsequent show where Char is featured and even appeared on Unicorn. She definitely plays a strong role in the franchise.

Lalah is a big deal in CCA, but she's not a major part of any of the previous series.

She's not the central theme of the entire show. Because it's a complicated show with multiple complex themes. Seed isn't like that. It really is just a simple generic robot show with simple themes and not much depth.
