Valve invites 5 players based on those 5 players performance as a team. if a player can't play for a medical reason then they can provide proof and valve will allow a sub to protect the 4 other players. if its based on branding only. then teams without an organization could never make it, meaning you need to be "picked up" to be a TI quality team, even if your play supports you are without signing to a group. also if its based on branding only, there is no reason not to use ringers all year and never stay to a single roster or to not drop any player for any reason.
Its not like Excaliber earned 'fnatic' the invite. Era did.

Valve doesn't invite teams, they invite 5 players that form the team so the team can't make any changes to who goes. they can if the player is unable to play, like fear. that is where the suspicion is, because fnatic went public and said valve isn't allowing them to play with excalibur because era has a medical condition preventing him from playing and that they would risk his health by playing him. but this info from valve says that era is able to play just fine so now it looks like fnatic was just trying to rally public support. tricky. Also, you'd be seriously misguided if you think teams would just willynilly do team trades and think their team is going to magically get better. The teams have to invest serious amount of downtime to replace players to create a better overall team, and if the team doesn't need a long time to see improvement then that means the player you replaced was fucking shittier than zoonie, and deserved to get replaced. Valve doesn't invite teams, they invite 5 players that form the team so the team can't make any changes to who goes. and this is retarded. And people thought League teams had issues with keeping people around who are past their prime for viewers. yeah, I thought legacy players on teams was an issue... While I don't have an opinion on the matter I do want to just clear up something. There's been very real cases of new teams forming and doing really well then breaking apart or slumping really hard into break up. One of the most recent examples of this is LGD.int and Sigma.int. In the former case the players are all really good and on good teams now (Mouz/Navi.US). Sometimes it's not a case of a player being bad but just some kind of team gelling and style that works out. The rule is also partly in place to stop them from inviting a team then the team that shows up at the international is completely different with none of the reasoning for the invite in the first place. Can just imagine if they invite say Sigma.int because they were doing really well then that team now breaks up into Mouz and whatever team the frenchies are on. It's a product of the way they handle the invite structure and protecting players. I'd imagine if there were actual player unions and someone to enforce contracts none of this would be needed. I mentioned this on LD, but that's more a scene stability issue. Outside of TI, there's no incentive for teams to consistently field the best possible team they have. outside of TI, qualifying for TI, or competing in any of the 20 major six figure+ prize pool tournaments, i agree. Prizepools are not stable income, except for consistent top teams. For everyone else it's feast or famine.
If the current environment for the dota scene is to scramble up teams last second for a single tournament because they think that's their best chance. I think that is more indicative of teams unable to sign firm contracts due to lack of long term financial security.

Do... do you think teams don't have contracts or pay salary or have sponsorships in dota?
Era is under contract for Fnatic.
I understand its a common sentiment among league fans who cling to riots every word that dota is prize pool only.. but TL goers should know better.
if you scramble up a team last minute, then you don't get a TI4 invite. at best you have to win a qualifier tournament if you are a newer team. last TI there were teams that lost invites for trying to do what you suggest and trying to get a better team last minute.

"I can see the best fucking games" -- i'm pretty sure you watch NA LoL. high quality play yup the reality is that the quality of a game is dependent on so many random elements.
"forcing players to play together" -- every major sport has a period where they need to lock in their roster. this is also done to protect the players, they don't want to work hard and then get cut after the invite while they pick up star players from other teams and bootcamp until TI. again the option to qualify through the tournament with a new roster is always open.
"The teams have to invest serious amount of downtime to replace players to create a better overall team," -- oh you mean like fnatic picking up excalibur right before the summit and taking a game off of DK in an embarrassing fashion? there are many examples in competition, in videogames or sports, where the addition of a new player really buoys a team.
having locked in rosters for any sort of qualification is standard for any sport. to disagree is okay. to call it "retarded" is something else.

Jimmy Johns is only good if I'm feeling lazy and don't want to drive, in which case I would rather order a pizza anyway.
Jimmy Johns is generally shit.
