So, here's our history lesson for the day. The Pantheon besides being a real building, is also a very cool and very important building in ancient architecture. It was the very first building with a domed ceiling. Domes are actually notoriously difficult to build, and before the Romans built the Pantheon nobody had been able to figure it out. What's even cooler about it is that for a long time after the Pantheon was built, people still couldn't figure it out. The only way people in the renaissance built all those big domed basilicas and cathedrals and etc was by directly copying the Pantheon. Had it been torn down by the gauls or something modern architecture might look totally different today. In fact, the Pantheon is still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world, 2000 years later. So the next time you see a picture of a big domed church or the US Capitol building or something like that with a big dome on top, remember that all of those buildings are based on the Pantheon. | ||
