Maru lost series to Dark, Serral and Cure. He is not the World Champion. Triple elim is a gift in and of itself...

Or maybe at the beginning of 2018 but not for long It’s certainly something I give points over him to the likes of Mvp and Innovation for, although Maru’s still one of the greats. That said if Serral didn’t exist Maru would have been the outright best player for big chunks of the past 6 years. Way, way longer than anyone has ever sustained. Obviously it’s a bullshit hypothetical but Maru has frequently been further ahead of the rest of the pack from a #2 position, for longer, than basically anyone else has from a #1 position Look I enjoy a bit of banter, I don’t even like Maru that much, although I admire his play. It’s just frustrating be it here or on r/Starcraft that any time one of the greats of the game loses people pop out to shit talk. Just a general observation not directed at you!

But I think even the biggest Serral fanboi has to admit that Maru is a championship contender in any tournament he enters and will be his biggest challenge to a title, even if the recent games weren’t close. He has basically said as much in interviews.

Oliveira won three Bo5 series and ended in the same position as ShoWTimE who didn't win a single map. Any further questions?

Of course that’s not the only metric going, and I’m very much of the opinion that when SC2 got the regional scene structure better sorted it allowed players from elsewhere to get to that level. Having vibrant local scenes, national, continental is how one builds a global competitive scene of any kind. So yeah they’re very meaningful, just not really in the context of the best of the best (historically) Poor choice of words

I think the tournament is phenomenal at deciding the top 4, and I think it's extremely hard for anyone to argue that anyone who has been knocked out should have been in the semis. What the tournament is bad at is separating the 5th-18th places. Because the only tournament at that point is a bunch of Bo3s which is kind of insane. And there's massive payout differences for each place.

He only had one Bo3 to play with, Coffee went 0-6 and got the same placement and remuneration as his compatriot from the same bracket that SHINTime didn’t get to play
