Back in BW Proleague, there was a period where 2v2 was being played regularly, but it was scrapped because it just wasn't nearly as interesting as 1v1. However, BW 2v2 has some flaws as an spectator esport because of how the balance works on standard maps (very rush/all-in heavy), whereas SC2 tends toward longer and more complex matches. I don't think SC2 2v2 is ever going to challenge 1v1 as the core of competitive SC2, but I do feel like there's room for some more 2v2 tourneys before we reach the saturation point of audience (and player!) interest.
