I think it's actually not logical at all to do a third place match, if you want to have a third place use another format. That would be the logical way to do things.

There is also a myriad of competitions with single eliminations which dont use a 3rd place match.

The first olympic games of the new age in 1896 didnt even had 3rd place medals, they only had silver medals for 1st place and bronze medals for 2nd place...
