You need to avoid the big 1-1 and 2-2 timings. Play defensively until you have 2-2 youself and start to max out. Roaches are very cost effective but supply ineffective.
And of course you need to avoid engaging in blinding clouds later in the game!

From my experience, yes, marauders definitely help a ton, but if you go like pure marauder hydras actually trade vs them very well.
