You can have dual citizenship as an American. You can get American citizenship and then acquire another citizenship, just not in the opposite order, I believe. (Also if your parents are citizens of another country and you're born in America, you get both)

The American's don't acknowledge that you have dual, but you still have dual. My wife is Canadian/American, but in the eyes of America, she is American only. Lol, it always makes me laugh.
