About the Tournament Sixteen players currently residing in the United States have been invited to play out a galactic battle to promote the release of Ender’s Game on Blu-ray and DVD. On top of a $7000 prize pool, the winning player will be invited to a showmatch against the victor of MLG's GameOn Tournament to compete for a larger prize pool of $10,000, to be broadcasted on Twitch.
Format Players are placed into 4 groups of 4 to be played out GSL style. The top 2 from each group will advance to the single elimination brackets Round of 8.
Group play will be commentated by Nathanias from February 5th-7th. The combination of RotterdaM and MrBitter will commentate from February 8th-9th and during the Grande Finale on February 22nd.
Schedule February 5th-9th starting at Wednesday, Feb 05 1:00am GMT (GMT+00:00) with the Championship Round on February 22nd at Tuesday, Feb 04 7:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)

At least QXC feels like an appropriate test for violet, he feels like the kind of player violet should be able to defeat but is very losable in his current shaky form.
I think its great that polt and violet are playing in this. I consider polt at least to be an NA player now Go captain America! but seriously even though polt is the favorite to win I think there is an outside chance that a player like minigun could take it.

Does this mean Sweden can claim Nerchio since we invaded Poland at some time or another? On second thought, never mind, everyone's invaded Poland at some point.

This kind of reasoning would make Britain the most successful nation in SC2 history. Out of all relevant countries, Sweden is the only one they haven't invaded.

Britain invaded Korea?
I guess maybe the Brits feel like America invading Korea would be the same thing as Britain invading Korea by proxy or something

It's really cool to see this industry supporting ESPORTS and SC2. I deliberately refused to watch Ender's Game to avoid supporting Orson Scott Card, but I might wind up buying it on DVD because of things like this.
Oh boy. Now I'm going to have images of the players acting like Ender at Command School stuck in my head - not that that's a bad thing by any stretch! Lest we forget, Asa Butterfield said he played StarCraft ahead of playing Ender to get into it a bit.

Oh okay, fair point. I was just getting worked up as there seems to be this growing faction who wants NA segregated.
In any case, I'd argue somewhat against the idea of everyone else playing for second. Scarlett was an "auto-win" for that one NA tournament and then everyone discovered Hitman. While it's true Polt's probably an overwhelming favorite, you can't really take anything for granted. IMO, the addition of a Blizzcon caliber player kinda adds to the excitement too as the tournament won't come off as a "minor league" event.
Violet and Polt live permanently in the US and are pretty committed to the scene. Banning from the tournament simply because they are Korean is silly IMO.
On February 06 2014 05:28 JimmyJRaynor wrote: was Scarlett originally entered into this event? any one know why Scarlett is no longer on the list?
This one is USA only I believe and they play against the winner of the MLG 16 man tournament which Scarlett is a part of. There isn't any overlap between the players in those tournaments.

I say we go one step further, let's just give the prize to whoever is the highest ranked in the lineup. No need to go through all the fuss of playing a bunch of games, we all know what's going to happen anyway. That way, we can just make the Polt vs Scarlett grand finals match and save a bunch of time.

I forces you to do nothing different because you'll always have full energy by the time you're blink allin hits. Blizzard know what they're doing, don't worry.

Either that or incompetence at seeing WHY the build is so damn potent and nerfing/buffing stuff that doesn't impact probably the most irritating build for the majority of Terrans (at least among interviews and speaking to my friends)

One bad engagement for Terran and it's over. In a complete steamroll.
That right there, that exact thing right there is why Mech is so unused vs Protoss. It doesn't matter how good you are with it, how well you play. It's so damn unforgiving. You make one error, you're dead. You don't get a second chance.

I enjoyed that match a lot, but a lot of that was because I was sitting on the edge of my seat knowing just how easily it could all turn around if Illusion wasn't careful.
At least we saw that Mech can actually produce fun games vs Protoss if it's played, thus dispelling one of the arguments critics have for keeping it from being viable.
I don't actually like SC2 mech in general, I like Banshee's when they're mixed in to snipe targets because it adds a lot I feel in terms of the dynamism of it. Lucifron vs Stephano in WCS EU being a prime example.
Immortals are too good vs mech, simple as that really. Plus they benefit from chrono enabling you to pump them out.
Game 1 I liked Illusion including hellbats vs a Chargelot heavy comp, it's not always doable I guess but it's always looked potent to me

If a good EMP hits the Immortals they get shredded. If immortals are worse than they are now Mech TvP would be really imbalanced once you get enough tanks.
This tournament has been pretty entertaining so far. I walked away for a bit, did they mention if the winner's and final matches are being played on a different day? That's an interesting thing to do, I think GSL has gotten us used to having groups fully played out in one setting but I think OSL/MSL used to do stuff like this, so it opens up some interesting opportunities for preparation that you wouldn't normally see.

Except Protoss can always incorporate air units. Or abuse Mech's immobility with Warp Prisms.
The Immortal is an unnecessary unit. You do not need a unit that can just walk into tank lines, especially one that's one the same damn tech tier as the units it's hard countering.

You list other options as if they are viable. It is a lot harder to incorporate air units as Protoss in your composition than it is for Terran. Also, "abuse" is not a good word for using warp prisms. It takes Terran 100 minerals to build a missile turret, and when going mech-style more than likely the Terran has all their flanks covered due to being starved on gas and not minerals, if not they do not deserve to survive against warp prism harass.
Unnecessary unit? Not at all. Without the immortal, what does Protoss have to counter tanks in a mech composition? Nothing. You say air units but can't the terran just make vikings to counter? Your argument is really invalid at the highest level to be honest. May I ask what league you are in?

Exactly - I noticed when I mentioned while casting that "going tunnel vision immortals can be a bad thing" a lot of the chat disagreed - but you're spot on with this. In almost any matchup when you tunnel vision a particular type of unit, you're asking for trouble.
I was happy to see that Bails mixed it up a bit with some extra stuff - but the main thing he did quite well was the flanking - utilising the many tactical positions on that map.

You're talking like someone who's only played with SC2's rock paper scissors system.
What counter to Siege Tanks does Terran have in TvT on the ground? None. If it's a fixed fortified position with tanks, then it's not going to be cost efficient to charge into it.
Why does Protoss need to be able to walk THROUGH tank lines? Answer that for me. Why is that something that Protoss HAS to have?
Ghost integration can see Immortals shredded for sure, to get them requires more of a turtly style than the more aggressive posturing Illusion was going for. Plus IMO gives the Protoss more breathing room to do other things
On February 06 2014 14:30 Wombat_NI wrote: Ghost integration can see Immortals shredded for sure, to get them requires more of a turtly style than the more aggressive posturing Illusion was going for. Plus IMO gives the Protoss more breathing room to do other things
This is exactly why "Well you can just use Ghosts to counter the Immortals" falls off.
Requiring Ghosts for Tanks to be effective pigeonholes what a Terran player can do, it severely limits how aggressive on the map they can be because of how vulnerable Mech units are in smaller groups and without Ghost support.
That all has everything to do with the fact that Immortal hard counters Thors and Siege Tanks while only requiring a Robotics Facility to produce.
A contrasting example is the Ultralisk.
In Brood War and in SC2 Ultralisks are one of the few units that can just shrug off Siege Tank fire, but it's not problematic because Ultralisks are very expensive and require Hive Tech.
So there's a ton of room for the Terran to be aggressive with Tanks on the map before Ultralisk tech can be reached. Immortals are on the same tier of tech as Tanks are and are only more expensive in minerals.
Plus Terran can't chrono boost. Collosus in standard Bio TvP are only kept in check by the ability to reactor out Vikings, they lack the ability to replenish an army if they get wiped so it's very dicey playing mech for reasons of production. Post-engagement if Protoss have a Warp Prism or proxy pylons you have that problem of Zealot warpins to deal with as well

For people who didn't see: qxc's first SCV took the long way around and ended up accidentally entering violet's base perfectly in between batches of zerglings and saw the Baneling Nest + lack of natural. That prompted qxc to throw the SCVs out in front of his base and build 2 more bunkers.
Dunno why Xeno didn't kill that oracle like 20 min ago...so scary to walk around the map with your army revealed when you know there are HTs hanging around

Half of the SC2 I "watch" is actually through audio! I typically run WCS streams in the background when I'm working on my computer.
Sorry for the bad mic . Nathan only asked me if I wanted to cast yesterday and all I have a shitty webcam one at this moment ! The casting was probably pretty bad as well though .

Personally I prefer when casters don't play the races of the players that are being casted. Destiny and Catz casting PvT was some of the best casting I've seen because while they are both very knowledge the game, their bases are lessened substantially. The emotional response of their experience isn't clouding their objectivity.

Reminds me of his 1base baneling vs qxc the other day (making extractor before knowing its vs CC first even), maybe he does odd stuff game 1 just for fun or something then brings it back next 2

This tournament has been rather slow for liquipedia updates, last night, I was asking players on Bnet who won their match if I missed it because I couldnt find it on LP
EDIT: Bitter loves Polar Night, Rotti despises it
Difference between protoss players and zerg players :D
Don't like casters who main a specific race. Or if they do main one race, when they cast with the race involved.
STAHP Polt. No more tanks! >_<
IIRC Rotti learned/learning zerg so he can better cast ZvT and be less biased
With polt out and violets hilarious ZvP, my vote goes to minigun, huk/puck(winner of their match) or a miraculous suppy.
Violet could always just have been playing bad the other day though, we will see.
And on the GameOn side; scarlett or state. Scarlett may have an easy 20K?
The gameon side is 5k. And considering how it looked last time, yeah she's the favorite, but it was hardly easy. If she wins it she should be a fairly solid favorite against anyone on the Twitch Ender side in the showmatch now that Polt is gone.
Edit: Huk vs Puck just ended and I completely missed all of it, fucking awesome. Illusion next gogo.

How can you not make ghosts against HT Immortal archon?? You don't even need the energy upgrade anymore! I just don't understand... and then terrans complain about balance?

You just described every zerg on the planet sans SK on a good day and maybe Roro.
viOLet's is particularly bad for someone who used to be a top contender in major events. His ZvP record this year is basically losing 2-3 to Top, losing 1-2 and 0-2 to san and HuK respectively, beating online hero Gun (Korean toss, been playing since 2010 but never at a LAN) and losing 0-2 to US toss Astrea in this very tournament.... That's not very impressive, not for someone of viOLet's history nor in general... :s
He was basically on sabbatical for an year. Give it time.

It will be played before she goes to the promised land so it should be fine I think. Can't recall her having lag issues playing NA to NA. Did fine in the last MLG thingy at least.

I think spoilers are just needed when you are talking about a tournament outside of its thread or on the first page. Spoilers are not needed within a LR thread.

mic shouldnt be the problem, the rest is, I'll work on it though, ordering stuff online as we speak

Clearly what you need is a nydus full of queens. LotV, let queens ride ultralisks and boom, ideal zerg anti air.
i dont know how huk wins his games on ladder but after 6 years or smth of pro sc2 you should know that theb est composition is 8 collossi archons and a bunch of immortals, immortals just kill so hard. can't believe he lost this

there is no specific colossus number. it is highly map and position dependent.

You may notice in that fight that Huk had only about 2/3 of his collossus shooting at the start of the battle. So even though he had more collossus it didn't matter because it was basically wasted supply. It wasn't the composition, it was the positioning and the engagement.
Yeah, HuK playing pretty well there. I am really surprised this Astrea guy is so good, hardly heard anything about him. Great for Root and him I would say
Huge blunders from the casters. Missing the counter attack and stuff and waaaaaaay overhyping huk. They started the overhype when Huk warped in more sentries after he sniped the third. "so well thought out" why the fuck didnt huk have enough forcefields to block the natural ramp then? why did he warpin like 5 sentries only to donate them to violet, instantly? why the fuck did he recall his immortals into a bunch of ling/roach? huk just played bad this game, and rotti and bitter should accept this instead of hyping up huk, who kinda went huk yolo again.
Violet threw the game he had when he didn't do anything against the prism (it's not like a spire is great with swarm hosts anyways). But HuK, as a nice guy, threw the ball back to Violet by scouting the Ultralisk Cave, building two immortals and then donating his army to violet for free.
I'd love to keep watching, but I cannot stand bitterdam hyping up that much more. not my thing.

I can get that, but I pretty much accepted that Bitterdam are really biased in favor of their friends and foreigners in general, so I just ignore it now a days and watch the games anyway, and enjoy all the funny stuff they always say, it makes the viewing experience a lot nicer.

It's kind of like Wolf, you have to take it for what it is. I usually mute, but sometimes listening can be amusing.

NA is kind of like Code B, in the sense that they have a lot of hidden gems in the wild west that is the NA ladder, at least they have the potential to take games off each other and cause some upsets. They are still a way away from beating Koreans though

Partings 15-2 Record vs minigun on NA ladder was super impressive to me until I saw parting use the same builds he used vs minigun in proleague last night and massacre his opponents just as badly. So I dont even know anymore.
NOTE: The replays from his NA ladder stint improved my pvp from 45% to 80% oO

Looking at the big picture of his matches today, seems like he just can't adapt that good. Also why does he sit on top of so many unspent resources for so long.
edit - oh well he won. But tbh i think HuK was the better player.

zerg does that so they can counter compositions as quickly as possible. and it worked, no?

how so? huk threw down a quick third and violet made units forever. then huk messed up his recall and lost the decisive engagement of the game. defending your third from roach/ling isn't exactly a funky new-meta thing...
So does anyone know the prize distribution for the showmatch finals (the series between gameon winner and twitch winner?) It says 10K but is it winner take all or what?

The irony here is that we know better and are probably closer with Violet on account of all the events we've done with him around the world through the years.
Regardless, this tourney truly was a lot of fun, and it was a blast getting to see Mini finally take a first place.

we were not the ones observing the game for you, huk didn't play bad that game, he played good and put himself in a really good position, just 1 big mistake cost him the game.
Suggesting bitter favors huk over violet is actually the biggest bullshit as I know he's closer with violet than with huk, just giving credit where credit is due, as for me, I couldn't care less as I was teammates with violet in Wc3 and have known him for like 8 years now while Chris is a person I just go to know via sc2 and even though I like him, I never exchange a word with him outside of events. If you think huk didn't play well ( i'm not saying I thought violets opening was great/i was a fan of it, I even mentioned I wasn't ) then you're just hating. Violet made mistakes, but huk forced a lot of them, in the end huk made a massive game ending mistake having units out of position etc and losing half his army, but does that mean he played bad the first 15 min? Either way, you seem to be more biased than I was, I appreciate good play, and just because there are throws later on, it doesn't mean it was all shit.
Maybe we just see this game different. HuK has been critizied in the past on these very forums for always all-inning, simple strats etc, not adjusting to what he see's. If you wanna tell me that the way he played the first 10/15 min in those games was not amazing compared to what people critized him for in the past, you're just hating. Once more, I don't think the way Violet was playing was absolutely fantastic, but that doesn't mean huk wasn't picking him apart.
Anyways I had a lot of fun today, I watch a shitton of sc2 and I can say that I saw some excellent play today, whether I would be casting it or not, I enjoyed these games and some of the NA players displayed absolutely fantastic stuff, and anyone who has followed/listened to me cast in the past will know that I'm not always like that and pretty often very calm and just analyze and move on., I tend to keep it real, if I get excited, it's real, not because the tournament organiser or sponsors tell me to be excited. Congrats Chad Motherfucking Jones (can't remember his full name sadly). Well deserved!
You just shouldn't go into a tournament like this expecting proleague or code S like games (they aren't always perfect either), but just enjoy the best of the NA scene and the awesome cast from Bitterdam. I liked it a lot .

Thanks for watching ^_^
You guys did a good job today, I enjoyed listening.
well said by rotti
99% of the time before anyone complains about "caster bias" they should stop and think about if they're calling "bias" because it's a real problem or because the caster said something positive about a player they don't prefer, whether it's for foreign/korean reasons, race reasons, personality reasons, etc. the person accusing bias is doing so because of their own bias
personally i couldn't care less if a caster is biased or even vocally favors one player as long as they are professional and call the game in an entertaining manner
Some great games today! Congratz to Minigun! Root Gamiing looks like old Root when they were top in NA. Rotti and Bitter are great combo. I was thoroughly entertained with their casting.
Thank you, for putting this NA tournament together! Looking forward to future NA tournaments.

Same here, as long as they aren't actually attacking a player for winning. ("That fucking shit is beating my friend at this game") I don't really care about bias. People like certain people more, and have their favorites in every match. It's just nature. As long as they still focus on the big picture it's all good. Besides, bias can be useful. It helps when a caster really likes a certain player because they know their playstyle and can better predict what may happen in the match or explain why a player reacted a certain way to a play by their opponent.

They started the overhype when Huk warped in more sentries after he sniped the third. "so well thought out" why the fuck didnt huk have enough forcefields to block the natural ramp then? why did he warpin like 5 sentries only to donate them to violet, instantly? why the fuck did he recall his immortals into a bunch of ling/roach? huk just played bad this game, and rotti and bitter should accept this instead of hyping up huk, who kinda went huk yolo again.
we were not the ones observing the game for you, huk didn't play bad that game, he played good and put himself in a really good position, just 1 big mistake cost him the game.

Rotterdam with the real talk.
Didn't get a chance to congratulate Minigun for his awesome win! And a tournament where he took down a Korean, no less! Looking good for those ROOT boys lately.
