I always wanted to make a map where that rising water level mechanic was used to turn the map into an islands map after, say, ten minutes. That way you could still open aggressive, but we'd get to see what long island games look like in SC2.

Nah, if you plan to incorporate new map features like this, they only work in long league formats. If it's just a weekend tournament, the correct move will always be to just all-in instead of making a long complex macro game for the map. Just look at Fruit Land. It started with most people ignoring map features to becoming a key part of multiple people's strategies later on in GSTL.

Well, the problem is you can't get these kinds of maps into official map pools or on the ladder without players wanting to play them. And players don't want to play them if there's anything that means they would have to adjust their play to account for a mechanic. Players want consistent maps with predictable patterns, so they can keep the things they have to learn and use to a minimum.

Map base placement really seems to have become standardized, anything that deviates from it is short lived or vetoed into the ground.

Fruitland was great because it was in GSTL - it was going to get played eventually and the GSTL is better suited to having one player versed in how to play on a particular map.
