I guess Maru is not used to having to play a late game TvP without a major advantage (thus the ghost academy so late) - probably not many people are able to defend his harass that well.

Imo Maru's build is to crush the protoss early or at least trade off to prevent protoss from ever reaching the death ball that Dear had in the end. Building ghosts would've severely hurt his aggressive potential in the early and mid game.

Maru's play is very entertaining. Unfortunately, that doesn't bode well in late-game TvP. Ghosts and vikings are absolutely critical.

Maru probably played a thousand games to come to a conclusion that he has a better odds taking advantage of his hyperaggressive style, multi-pronged harass and great splits. And so many people on TL know better that all he needed to do was "make ghosts".
