Why does kespa get special reserved spots?

KESPA, ESF, and all top global teams were contacted prior to registration opening to gauge interest. We put a portion of passes to the side outside of public sale so that top players had a chance to purchase. This is how we have always operated the open bracket sales process.

thanks for clearing that up

Where's ESF qualifiers? Or did they not buy?

KESPA ran this qualifier, not MLG. This is how they decided who they would send to the event.

Since I don't see Flash/Innovation, I'm guessing that they're already qualified through MLG Winter and will be going. I hope so, because I really want to see Flash (again).

Flash isn't going to MLG because of Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games. Life gave up his spot for MLG and Flash was the replacement.

Isn't a Kespa representative spot the same as everyone else's spots though? I was under the impression that there would be no seeding in this tournament or special treatment for certain players.

I have to imagine this is just Kespa being weird and only letting 3 of their players go to MLG when they could easily have bought more player passes.

MLG has said over and over that they are reserving spots for pros. It's obvious that they'd reserve some for KeSPA.

Flash had decided to go to the '2013 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games'. This means he can't go to MLG Anaheim????

Two events are at the same time.

Flash is the Korean national representative of 2013 Asian Indoor-Martial Arts Games. Life and SoS have decided not to go because there is no prize money. So instead Flash is going. Flash had expressed that he is willing to go even without the prize money. But this event is at the same time with MLG Anaheim. Let's see if Flash is going to not do the national representative and go to MLG to earn points.

lol was it mentioned anywhere that Parting lost to Hoejja 1-2 in the first round? at least that's what I found with the names. Could be translating wrong

also argued unofficial world champ Bear played in the qualifiers so he's still alive. he managed to beat Paralyze in the Ro32 before RorO got his revenge in the Ro16 2-1

I also do not understand this tournament. They're running qualifiers for an open bracket tourney? Makes no sense to me. Innovation and Soulkey can just go if their team sends them.

Only explanation is what others have pointed out that kespa is just controlling who is allowed to go over with this tourney. I don't like that idea though because there's no free will from the players. It's an open bracket! If a player wants to go and his team is willing to pay for it, then he should be allowed to go. There shouldn't be this extra barrier of entry to go with this tournament.

I don't get it, I thought RO4 of last season will automatically advance. That means Innovation should be in this event.

I don't like that idea though because there's no free will from the players. It's an open bracket! If a player wants to go and his team is willing to pay for it, then he should be allowed to go. There shouldn't be this extra barrier of entry to go with this tournament.

It makes even less sense when you consider that last year SKT sent Rain to MLG Fall by themselves, into the open bracket, outside of the " Kespa " group stage invites.

LOL Rain is "not" much better than either of them. It's just not possible with the way the Protoss race is designed. It has a very low skill ceiling cap compare to other races, which is also why there doesn't ever appear to be the #1 Protoss player at any given time, which is also why PvP always comes down to 1) build order loss, or 2) Colossus micro.

I'm guessing that kespa will be paying for few players to go and this is their way of choosing them.

Yeah I understand that. I just wish that if stx wanted to send innovation, he'd be allowed to go. However, all teams are under kespa and they make the rules, so stx wouldn't be allowed to make their own decision about this. I'd like it more if kespa was offering free trips for this tourney, but teams could still choose to send players from their own budget.

In sc2 the difference in skill is so slim that a qualifier like this becomes a bit of a coin flip. Its a shame that no one of the best players managed to qualify.

Man count me as being disappointed in the results. A chance to have gosu kespa players at mlg and we got 3 underwhelming representatives. We got the WCS AM koreans of Kespa!

LOL Rain is "not" much better than either of them. It's just not possible with the way the Protoss race is designed. It has a very low skill ceiling cap compare to other races, which is also why there doesn't ever appear to be the #1 Protoss player at any given time, which is also why PvP always comes down to 1) build order loss, or 2) Colossus micro.

pvp he isnt but pvt pvz he is, thus hes much better than both of them

Hmmm... I kind of prefer having these 'lesser' kespa players through...

Will be some good matches between them and the top foreigners, rather than just straight up losing vs Innovation/soulkey.

Sad Flash can't be there though

So what exactly happens now? Are those 3 the only kespa-players to attend Anaheim? What exactly does this qualification mean, since there is an open bracket?

So is there a clear reason why a qualifier was held? I mean, anyone can just sign up and go to MLG (and I believe everyone is seeded equally this time, right?). Is it because Kespa decided only winners of this tournament get let out of their other obligations? Or this is who they pay for flights for? Or is MLG paying for the flights? Or did player passes sell out so quickly people couldn't get them?

Innovation 1-2 Sacsri too? Am I interpreting that right? No innovation at MLG?

These results say to me that even the GSL system is incredibly flawed, and we're really not seeing the best games still.

Super Tourney :DDDDD

But seriously, dafuq did Sacsri do to 2-1 Bogus. Major props, not an easy feat.

No given reason afaik, but the most likely reason is that Kespa only want to send a limited amount of players.

KESPA, ESF, and all top global teams were contacted prior to registration opening to gauge interest. We put a portion of passes to the side outside of public sale so that top players had a chance to purchase. This is how we have always operated the open bracket sales process.

Well, it didn´t work out so great for WCS NA, even though the players were better known, but still no stars.

But Kespa or eSF players could still buy regular passes like every other player would, right? At least from your side of things?(Kespa possibly limiting by themselves the amount of players they send out being set aside)

I think it's fair enough , as long as MLG is not paying their trips since it is open to everybody.

Buying a ticket isn't easy enough, you want to limit everybody's chances by adding in a qualifier?

I believe this was an internal thing for kespa
They could send a bunch of players if they wanted (it's open, after all), but then decided to send only 3 (or MLG saved only 3 slots for them).
Then, they ran a tournament to see who would be the 3 players. The end.

So all the other KesPa players who didn't win these qualifiers will not be going to MLG?

Bisu has been fairly decent in HoTS.
If it wasnt for the fact that SKT T1 boasts 4 ace players, he'd be sent out more often.

They could send a bunch of players if they wanted (it's open, after all), but then decided to send only 3 (or MLG saved only 3 slots for them).
Then, they ran a tournament to see who would be the 3 players. The end.

Correct.

So all the other KesPa players who didn't win these qualifiers will not be going to MLG?

Correct. Kespa decided to only send over three players, so that is it.

There is a 128 player bracket and you invited only three players from the whole Kespa ?
The level at this MLG will be so low... I don't think I'll be watching :/

The ideas behind this are ancient and really funny, but I guess KeSPA players can still hide in their own leagues.

Not MLG´s fault, kespa decided to only send three players, if I understood everything correctly.

Its so sad to see all the top players throw their matches...even flash and life giving up their seeds. The best players just don't have any incentive to go there anymore. MLG will be a crap tourney from now on it seems, it's sad rly

I hope the highlight of MLG Anaheim is:
"Who in the world is this guy named Stats? And how did he overcome all to become the MLG Champion??"
But knowing KT's success in individual leagues...:<..

Wow all the top KesPa players won't be there then...
Well actually I guess Stats is a very good player, but not comparable to INnoVation, Soulkey, Flash, or Rain in my opinion. He's on the same level as Zest and them (WHO ALSO AREN'T GOING T___T)

I think Life gave up his spot before he learned MLG would not be inviting him and it would be just an open bracket tournament. As of now it's uncertain whether he's going.

Nobody threw their games. If they didn't want to play, they could just decline. That being said, first prize is only $5,000 this time, which is less than 4th was last MLG, so it may not be such a high priority now, and these kinds of qualifiers are notorious for being very unpredictable.

They have incentive, it's a matter of personal priority. Flash and Life have opposite priorities.

That's why he beat Rain because he's not comparable right? Jangbi and Innovation had excuses because they also compete in GSL this week but Rain has no excuses for not performing good. Anyway there were some qualifiers, your boy lost, deal with it.

i wouldn't want to win that qualifier either if it meant traveling halfway across the world to compete for a measly $10k against 127 other people. i question the incentives kespa and MLG provide these players since this event has hardly any hype and barely any prestige left after WCS castrated it.

How about explaining who actually qualified? Is it just the 3 people that won in finals (Stats, soO, Dear)? Why put BISU BISU BISU if he didn't qualify? Or did ro4 people all qualify, which would mean Rain actually qualified?

Of course they threw their games. Theres just no point going to MLG for them anymore. Even flash who actually had a seed+paid trip gave it up

As I just said, if they didn't want to go, they'd just not play. Why would they waste their time playing in the qualifiers just to intentionally lose?

Flash is one of the few progamers who can pursue career in politics when he's old, congressman/KeSPA chairman view him as one of the flag of e-sports. They want him to participate in the Asian indoor games, the team probably wants him to be there too.

Yeah seriously would prefer the OP to remove that. So upsetting to see. On topic, Bisu still unable to win a PvP to save his life. That's too bad.
