The StarCraft II eSports scene is as vibrant as ever thanks to the recent release of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm and the launch of the revised World Championship Series. 2013 has been a big year for StarCraft–which just celebrated its 15th anniversary–and it’s about to get even better. We’re happy to announce the comeback of ASUS ROG to the StarCraft II arena this summer, as it returns to Helsinki with the ASUS ROG Summer 2013 StarCraft II Tournament!

The event will take place August 1-3 at ASSEMBLY, with a concept similar to last year’s ASUS ROG Summer 2012. The tournament will run for three days, with two group stages and single elimination playoffs. The roster will consist of 32 players, including those who have qualified and those who have been invited, with the top eight earning a share of the $25,000 USD prize pool. The finals will be played on the main stage where the very first ASUS ROG Champion, DIMAGA, was crowned. A free HD stream with professional commentary will also be provided.

Tournament format

The tournament format is the same as last year in ASUS ROG Summer 2012: two dual tournament group stages and single elimination playoffs. The first group stage (Ro32) is played on the first day, the second group stage (Ro16) takes place on the second day and the playoffs (Ro8 onwards) are played on the third and final day of the event. All matches are best-of-five including the final. The 3rd place match is not played.

The ASUS ROG Summer 2012 tournament was among of the first outside of Korea to adopt the dual tournament format which had been made familiar to the StarCraft II audience by the GOMTV Global StarCraft II League. The feedback from the players about the new format was purely positive and especially the best-of-5 groups were praised being more fair than the more common best-of-3 format. Thus, it is no wonder that we are seeing this format again at ASUS ROG Summer 2013.

Participation

There are two ways to gain one of the 32 spots in the tournament, by a direct invite or by an online qualification tournament. In order to receive an invite, players must first request an invite by filling out an application form. Details about the online qualifications will be released later. However, everyone is encouraged to request an invite first, and participate in the qualifiers second if need be.

Woot-Woot. Watching polt crush stephano and lucky at ASUS ROG was one of the primary reasons i started following the pro scene

oh wow, ASUS ROG is back ^_^

it's always been such a great tournament to watch, especially with the "GSL" style dual groups played out with best of fives instead of best of twos.

Anyway since you're already doing god's work on earth, why not sponsor elfi again

Glad this is coming back. but really disappointed that Idra is included in this. In my opinion, his current and previous BM record is deserving of him being practically ignored in the industry. I will specifically not tune in to watch any games he is casting.

Can't wait for Idra's commentary. Also I hope Stephano gets this one as it should be (one) of his last tournaments.

lol idra casting, can't wait to hear the bs of how bad everyone is

ps. i know that idra usually doesn't say how bad everyone is (like he does when playing) but because we don't here it, it just makes me think of this

I recon you've never heard him cast? He is a great caster and wouldn't get gigs if he did that while casting.

EDIT: Oh sure, that again, I'm just gonna enjoy his casting and leave you struggle with the thought of him faking it.

now read my edit ...and i've heard him cast a lot, he's very analytical, but anyone who knows standard play knows the same thing

^^ it's not faking it, he just doesn't say it out loud...ie he is smart enough to choose what he says and where he says it

ASUS ROG Summer 11 (TB / apollo, won by Dimaga over Mana) and Winter 12 (MrBitter / Khaldor / Apollo and Kaelaris won by Polt over Stephano) was without GDstudio afaik. Also Assembly ("event" it's held at) has production capabilites and SETT has tournament experience too.

But what a fuck idra is doing there? Khaldor + Idra? excuse me, have I miss something?

Think Khaldor + incontrol back in days....aaaah ...

And last year was awesome! Anybody remember?:

So Asus ROG tourney is back? With respect to event atmosphere on stream, this is the closest you get to Dreamhack when Dreamhack just isn't around for the time being What I would give to have TB cast this again. Yes, TB, out of all.

Is famous. Like Kim Kardashian.

Is not talented caster in my opinion, just lists things that happen in a game "three zerglings get past 2 die" that everybody sees anyway and huge bias towards P being op and just says things like "now protoss will a-move and win" (did attack and lose the game). I don't know maybe he will improve, let's hope so at least. I'm sure everyone who is a idra fan thinks he is great caster and maybe there is enough of those people that make him a good choice for this event.

I don't understand why they picked Idra as a caster. He is certainly not a bad caster, but there are many better casters than Idra.

im far from a Idra fan but i´ve seen him cast during the EG cup and he´s not too shabby tbh, so this might actually work.
Now i just wait for a siiiiick line-up

Well, Khaldor as the main caster of a tournament is always great, the tournament gets so mutch better with him. But i cant imgaine him with Idra 3 days long...like, Khaldor is always friendly and funny, while IdrA...

anyway, Khaldor is gonna rock it!

Khaldor and Idra combo seems very interesting. it could turn out to be amazing, but it also could turn out to be horrible. ah well, the games should be great either way though.

Great news, the old Asus ROG tournaments were partially the reason why I picked a ROG notebook over the competition Always enjoyed the show they've put on!

$10k for first place, IdrA's casting has always been pretty good as he has casted intermittently in the past

INDEED THIS IS THE END OF SC2 all thanks to ninjamyst for telling us

I haven't been a huge Idra fan, particularly after the TL meltdown but I must say his casting at Shoutcraft NA impressed me. He is fully capable of removing his bias and when he does, he's a great caster in my opinion.

In response to the ~10 people who won't be watching due to Idra, I'd recommend getting over the past because you'll be seeing much more of him in future tournaments.

Headline: Asus steps up the plate seeking to reap the benefits of increased HoTs viewership, while MLG sulks in a corner debating how they can nickle and dime a game they obviously don't give a shit about.

Thank you Asus!

Is talented.

Paid for talent.

Real life is not a schoolyard, you don't go to detention because you were mean to the other kids.

Hang on. Are we still talking about Idra? The guy who got fired from his well-paid professional job because he was, essentially, "mean to the other kids"?

When that went down I said I would support him if he could turn his perception around. Suffice it to say, he hasn't. He still calls everyone bad and treats people badly, particularly if that person is DeMusliM, his former teammate. He's still toxic.

Perhaps this is the tournament where he turns it around, but it remains to be seen. I'll definitely tune in and give it a go, mostly because I like good SC2 (and Khaldor).

I decided to give his cast a chance with shoutcraft America (I was never particularly a fan of his personality and thought his release was a long time coming) and actually found him to be surprisingly professional. If the play is bad, he says so which is so refreshing (anoys the hell out of me when Axletoss hypes up a piss poor performance) but he does it in a way which is professional and non-vulgar. Completely and utterly different to his personality when actually playing the game, I'd say give his casting a chance.

He's always been quite professional (though a bit dry and sardonical at times) when it comes to casting. The rest he keeps under wraps for his own stream.

Shoutcraft was not Idra's "debut" as a caster, though I guess they mean his debut as a full-time caster since quitting competitive play.

idras casting is excellent and he doesnt let his personal feelings get in the way too muhc, although when he does it sounds more tounge in cheek, its good and imo the best analytical caster out there cos hes actually won stuff AND maintains GM himself

I would also like more info on this. Surely it at least qualifies as tier 2?

It depends on two things: Whether Blizzard deems the qualification system open enough and the caliber of the players in the final lineup. So this can't be determined yet.

hmmmm! Khaldor + Idra just might be incredibly awesome. Bit nervous to see how they do, but I think their personalities could compliment each others casting. Idra is always great for analysis, and Khaldor is fun because he brings the hype during intense moments. Loved this tourny last year. Regardless of whose invited, I'm looking forward to it.

That's hardly the case here. ninjamyst's post is just pointless, baseless whining.

Or defending a tournament he has been a part of in the past?

Also this is the second highest prize pool at an Assembly event (last summer's ROG was $30k, only 5k higher, the previous two ROGs were $20k and e15k).

Oh stop being such a big baby. IdrA is a solid caster, and he's great for this community.

I swear, the amount of prissiness about BM in the Starcraft community is just insane.

solid first post bro. Khaldor is an established and, at the very least, good caster. not every caster is always going to be available for every event for a price both sides can agree to, and tournaments will not not hire a caster because YOU don't like him.

He's also been a caster at Assembly before. It's very possible that ESL's casters were simply unavailable (Kaelaris has expressed interest in returning north for such events). My only concern remains that both casters have often expressed very strong racial bias.

ASUS ROG Summer 2013 is not going to be a WCS partner event and therefore no WCS points will be granted. This is the current status, and it's unlikely to change.

I never made the connection before (although the All Star invite is quite different from the seasonal tournaments).

Agreed, the invite is a little different. I think this is just one of the reasons I like seeing him cast. He's won several major events. I think it gives him a unique perspective most casters don't have.

When are the next invites being announced? Seems like it's been a long time since the last announcement.

HyuN said on his blog he was attending Assembly, so I suppose he should be on the list of invites next?
