- 4th: 1 pair of noise cancelling headphones
Tournament Rules
General Info: The tournament will be a 1v1 Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty tournament, run on the North America server. A maximum of 128 competitors will be allowed to enter, each of whom must bring their own computer and have a Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty account that is playable on the North America server.
- Bring all your own equipment - we do not have equipment available to use on-site.
- All games will be 1v1; casters may join games in the final rounds as observers.
- All games will be played on speed faster.
- Save the replays of every game you play - they may be needed for review, proof of victory, analysis in the case of a disconnect, or for other unforeseen reasons.
Tournament Structure
- Pool Play: The 128 players will be divided into 16 pools or 8 players each. Each player will play a BO1 versus each of the other players in his/her pool (for a total of 7 games). The top 3 players in each pool will advance to the next stage. Pool play should be completed on Saturday.
- Double Elimination Bracket: The remaining 48 players will be seeded into a double elimination bracket (no extended series this year) based upon their performance in pool play. This means that the winner of each pool will receive a first round bye in the bracket stage. Excluding the finals, all rounds will be BO3. The first couple rounds of bracket play will start on Saturday, the rest will be completed on Sunday.
- Finals: The finals will be a BO7 series with the player from the winners' bracket starting up 2-0 versus the player from the losers' bracket. The finals will be casted live by MrBitter and Frodan! They are scheduled for 5pm on Sunday evening.
Map Pool: We will be using MLG/GSL versions of each map. 1) Antiga Shipyard 2) Ohana 3) Whirlwind 4) Daybreak 5) Entombed Valley 6) Cloud Kingdom 7) Abyssal City
Map Selection Process
- Pool Play: The maps shall be played through in order, each of the 7 rounds having a corresponding map.
- Bracket Play: Each round shall be assigned a starting map. Upon completion of a game, the looser selects the next map.
Race selection: Random is allowed. Race-switching is allowed.
Disconnect Policy If a disconnect occurs during a match, the players are encouraged to first attempt to reach a consensus between themselves and agree that either (1) the game was very close and they should just replay it, or (2) one of the players had a significant advantage and thus should be awarded the win. However, in the entirely likely event that the players do not agree upon one of those options, they should inform a tournament staff member. Your replay will then be analyzed and an official ruling will be made.
Questions or Comments? Post in this thread or PM me. Thanks!

I formally agree with this statement.

We decided to simplify the map selection process by simply assigning a starting map to each round. For subsequent games it's looser pick as always.

Sorry guys the website is still WIC, will be up soon~

The wireless internet is not necessarily fast or reliable, so we strongly advise you to bring an ethernet cable. We'll probably have some extras on-site, but there's no guarantee.
And definitely bring a monitor!

When are the registration confirmation e-mails supposed to arrive? I need to know if I will be participating or not to let work know I need the day off.

^What hereticfurby said. The event on facebook reads it starts at 1pm Friday, but then the post in TL says Saturday through Sunday. I hope actual pool play starts Saturday!

Confirmations should go out really soon. If you signed up before today you're probably in.
As for the start of the tournament, it will start on Saturday. Friday is a preview day for the students on campus and people in the area. None of the major tournaments will start on Friday.

How long do you think the ethernet cable should be?

Yeah if someone can please update the original thread with more detailed information. Saying "Bring your computer" means your computer, but comments say Monitor + cables, etc. etc.
I for one need details before I take a trip to SD. Besides, it'd be a pain in the ass carrying all that gear myself. And what do you do with your gear once your matches are complete?

I tried to make it clear when I said "Bring all your own equipment - we do not have equipment available to use on-site." In the confirmation email there will be more details and reminders about what to bring, but in general you should be thinking that whatever gear you need to use to play, you should bring.
After you're completed with your matches, if you want to keep your stuff in the area where you played, that should be fine. If we need the space, we will find a place where you can store your gear if you want to stick around and don't have a good place to store it yourself.
On January 15 2013 07:45 Fabled wrote: How long do you think the ethernet cable should be?
We will have ethernet boxes on each table, so short cables should be fine.
|
Are you allowed to still keep your setup running if there is space available? I don't necessarily want to drive 180 miles to play 7 bo1s, can you still LAN afterwards?

Definitely, people do this every year. Eventually we may end up needing the space, but you can expect to get plenty of gaming time in for your 180 mile drive, even if you don't make it into the bracket stage.

To anyone who has signed up so far - you can be pretty safe assuming that you will be in the tournament. The official confirmation email is being proofred for detail and accuracy right now, and will be sent out ASAP. Since there are a lot of questions about what exactly to bring, I'll give you guys the details regarding that subject right now (which I have taken directly from the confirmation email):
I would like to highlight a couple key points about what you should bring so that no one misses them. Firstly, bring your own equipment - all of it. This includes your computer, mouse, mousepad, keyboard, monitor, headphones, ethernet cables, power strips, etc. The reason to bring ethernet cables is that although we do have wireless internet on site, it is not intended to handle huge numbers of gamers simultaneously. Instead, we ask that you bring ethernet cables to use the wired internet connection we will have set up specifically for the event. Additionally, I mentioned power strips. We can only guarantee one power outlet per player in the tournament, so you should bring a power strip if you need multiple plugs for your equipment. If you come with a group of friends, you may certainly plan to share power strips amongst your group.

The confirmation emails for those that have signed up so far have been sent out! Please PM me if you have signed up but have not received a confirmation email. However, note that we are not automatically sending the confirmation email as soon as you sign up, so if you have yet to sign up, you may not receive the confirmation email instantaneously. If you do sign up and don't receive an email of some sort (either confirmed entry or waitlist if we fill up) within 24 hours, please PM me so I can ensure that we received your registration.

Also just updated the OP to inform you all that the finals (and likely the matches leading up to the finals) on Sunday evening, scheduled for roughly 5pm, will be casted by Frodan and MrBitter.

My friends are playing in the LoL tournament so I figured I'd go! I won't be playing in the tournament so any recommendations on what to bring to have an optimal spectator experience?

What's the best way to carry our equipment into the ballroom? For example should we hand carry all of our gear, computer, monitor, ect. or should we bring a suitcase full of our stuff. Just wondering what everyone else will be doing.

Most people last year brought laptops I feel, although there were a healthy amount of desktops. Most people went in groups and had friends to lend a spare hand (since laptops would be in backpacks).

Popcorn, a drink, and a lawn chair.
Naw, but I would recommend bringing some snacks and drinks so you can maximize your spectating time! (There are plenty of places to get food downstairs from where the tournament will be held, for those who were wondering.)

Hey guys,
For tomorrow, Sunday, we will be officially opening the doors for SC2 at 10am (though I plan to be there around 9 or so). We will give you a good 45 minutes to an hour to set up and warm up, and probably won't be officially starting tournament games until 11am.
Good luck, see you tomorrow.

I had a really great time and want to give props to all the people that made it happen; you guys did a fantastic job and I'm looking forward to it next year! Easily the best run tournament in my experience. I love that you have rectangular tables this year. Also I think the bracket reshuffle-ling really helped made it fair. Of the 16 players who got the #1 seed in the group stages, 7 out of 8 in the top bracket made it to top 8, while none in the bottom bracket made it to top 8.
|
Hey SC2ers,
It was an honor running such a great tournament with all you skilled and well-mannered players. I want to thank you for bearing with us on the first day, due to a few issues with switch boxes dying and players no-showing, which meant that some of you were left with only a few games in pool play. On the second day, my goal was to get through the bracket smoothly, and you all did a very good job of making that happen.
Those players who came up to me at the beginning of the second day to suggest reshuffling the top players in the bracket for fairness - that was very helpful and I'm sure those players were all a lot happier because of it. It's fair to say the top finishers really deserved there positions.
On that note, I'd like to congratulate the winners again and announce them for those who may not have been around last night: 1st Place: iSInsur 2nd Place: RevAznDude 3rd Place: reverie 4th Place: Power (Ever considered picking a race?!)
I'd really like to congratulate all the players who came - I was walking around watching your games when I had the opportunity, and saw so many exciting and close games. Whether it was in pool play, the loser's bracket, or the grand finals, you all were playing with intensity and conviction. We even had a tie game at one point! (Okay, moral of the story: base trading a terran = )
Finally, I'd like to give a huge thanks to our casters, FroDan and MrBitter! You guys brought the energy and the passion that you always seem to have! It may not have looked like you had a huge audience right in front of you for some of the games, but that's because we were all watching from the SC2 area in back. (Favorite quote: "There's nothing scarier than being turned into a cupcake - your sole purpose in life is to be eaten" - during League finals, but genius nonetheless.)
Hope you all had fun! I recognized a very large number of you from previous years, and I hope to see you in the years to come.
-Cody
(I lent someone my short-ish grey ethernet cable, if you have it let me know. It's probably lost and gone forever, which is fine, because that's kind of what I expected to happen when I lent it out, haha...)
|
Even as a lowly Diamond, I had a lot of fun and surpassed my own expectations by just making it past pool play. It was a great experience playing against Masters / GM level players. I wish this was something that could be held quarterly. Overall, a great weekend trip to see my sister (she goes to UCSD) and a nicely run tournament.
