Looked to me like he was countering any ling/baneling composition, and managed to get his defense up when he saw the Spire (also why he didn't get as many drones).

Maybe all he's saying is life gained a ton of confidence through his GSTL wins which happened shortly after the patch, that confidence propelled him to the TSL finals where he lost but continued to gain more experience and now has taken his honed skills and confidence to a new level.
