I like it how the predictions sometimes favour KeSpa pros and sometimes GOM players. Same with the results. This facing on equal height is the best for eSports.
i kinda cheer for best against flash, even thou i normally like the terran to win but then next week flash / mc matters even more which would be fun to watch
I dont think I am exaggerating when I say that this was a beautiful game by rain. He is already so ridiculously good I wouldnt be surprised to see him in code s pretty soon. His control, macro and decision making is top notch.
I'm worried for SKT. With Bisu seemingly starting to play better now, and Sun already being the new shining star that fangirls scream for, it is bound to get messy :OO

Called it. Kinda hate when zergs just make a bunch of spines before they have broods thinking 'oh yeah no way the protoss army can barrel through here with almost no losses. I can just hold them with fungals and spines.'
Yeah good idea. Hold colossus balls with spine crawlers.

Got a fair bit done with his phoenixes, a large number of ovies, 3 queens (that last one at the nat was a nice bait), a fair few drones. The zealot warpins at the end were a nice touch. Outplayed DRG pretty hard.

When the phoenixes died, Dongraegu had almost no units and not that much Infestor energy; Dongraegue was vulnerable for a several-minute window, which Rain hit.

I was living in China and studied with koreans in my group. I can't say they were faceless and emotionless, they were all pretty nice teenagers like many europeans are. Same interests same talks. I didn't find them anyway different from myself or my friends, just that they were speaking korean language and, oh, the girls were damn pretty.
dun worry people when SC2 will start to only rely on foreign audience all Kespa/ESF players will get proper PR training (kinda like how Kespa showed themselves at MLG) and they will suddenly rediscover their lost PERSONALITY. And then we will call it a second coming of WWE.

Sun pretty much stomped DRG in the first game.
Oz did a sentry-immortal push similar to the one flying did against MVP on Ohana last week, Fantasy had stim but no bunkers and it felt like he kinda botched the fight to me, although it's kinda hard to call. Ended up losing a lot of SCVs and having to lift his expo to the main, was way too behind to do anything and just died eventually.

Not similar... In this he did an extremely greedy early expand opening which pretty much was the reason he won the game, he just chose Immortal push as the finisher instead of the many other numerous options he had.
The problem with paywalls is that OGN don't give a fuck about us, they just want our money, and if just 2k people pay 20$ a month, they get 40.000$ a month in total, which is far more than even 10k viewers would get based off adds, especially because they have to few games.

right now its more a meeting of different styles, people used to bo3 in bo1 and the other way round in the gsl. Strategies that were common some time ago, that got figured out people moved on to a point where the old stuff works again. Thats why most games look like a diamond player took over at some point of the game. Right now the secrecy and the system plays into the hand of the kespa players, but the esf players have the upper hand in experience, it equals itself out. But i guess in the end kespa players are a bit on top, because it looks like they won't attend to foreign events and spend more time training.

Makes sense, but isn't the whole point of reactor double CC being able to fill numerous bunkers? Then salvage them in the midgame to make more barracks/another CC? Or am I saying that because I'm a noob shit who has no understanding about the game (well, I don't even play Terran and Fantasy is a progamer)? Or both? I don't know. That's why I am asking.

It's just a greedier version of the reactor expand to reflect the generally greedy gameplay we see nowadays.
The basic idea is that if Protoss scouts a reactor rax they are scared of all kinds of 1 base tech builds. Then instead you've just taken guys off gas and are expanding for an economy lead while toss covers their bases at home.
Double expand is the greedy option since Toss are no longer slowing their economy for 1 base builds and instead just FE and react anyway most of the time. In that case you can just try for an extra CC so that once again, while they may be playing more economically, they're still having to cover their bases while you power an economy lead and dominate the mid/late game.
Making and filling bunkers is definitely a very useful talent toi have though.
Paying for OSL gets you a maximum 59 games, and this might even cost 40$ because everything isn't done on one month.
For GSL, you get the following - Code S - Maximum 217 games Code A - Maximum 156 games Up N' Down - Around 40 games
Now, of course Code S and Code A can be cut down to 2/3 of what is listed because of 2-0's, 3-0's and so forth, same goes for OSL once in the playoffs. I'm also pretty sure that a GSL season is 25 or 30$? I don't recall, since I bought yearly ticket for 100$.
Also keep in mind, Proleague will probably be under the same paywall.

Yikes~ I really didn't want to join in on this conversation because I thought it wasn't very conducive to anything positive. But here goes~ I'm a Korean citizen. Born in Korea in 1994... When I was less than 3 months old, I flew to Russia, where I stayed till I was 3. Then I moved to Illinois/Mississippi for 4 years. Then when I was 7, I moved back to Russia, where I stayed around 10 years (with a year break in 2005, which I spent in California). During our stay in Russia, I've traveled Europe, and I've spent moderate amounts of time (at least a year or two in which I got to know the person) with Finnish, Danish, German, British, Australian, Japanese, American, Mexican, Korean, Canadian, Swedish, French, Ukrainian, etc... Anywho, I've been following the e-Sports scene since 2008 or so. Not as long as some of you but, I have had a fair share of SC:BW and SC2 (although SC2 to a lesser extent).
Ok, now I'll try to be as fair as possible and just try to clear things out. I've read this whole thread/argument a couple times, and I just wanted to point out a few things that stood out to me....
First off, bluQ: saying Rain is a faceless Korean was completely fine. We could disagree all we want, but following up that opinion of yours with a bit of a more sweeping statement (even if it was still your opinion of the people) that there are "so many boring faceless Koreans" was a bit harsh and bound to incite others to flame on you. But then you went on saying, "He IS a boring personality. Deny it, lie" and that could be taken by a lot of people as you trying to say that your opinion was fact. :o Especially cause a couple posts down you switch and say it was your opinion again.
Secondly: Someone suddenly replied to bluQ saying "'Faceless' is something I'd expect from a closet racist." What the heck? Can he not state his opinion on the guy? Sure he could have said what countless of Bisu anti-fans have been saying since forever: "Oh Bisu's so boring in his interviews. He just says it was luck" or something... But still I don't rage everytime they say that do I? And then another response to bluQ was, "He was smiling throughout the interview." Who WOULDN'T be smiling after a win in the OSL? I don't expect him to be a grouch after a win..
Thirdly: bluQ had a good point:
On September 05 2012 20:05 bluQ wrote: But hey I get it, you guys will just flame everyone who express his opinion which is not equal to yours. Calling others ignorant with that attiutde doesnt deserve more than: retards.
I think both sides of this argument was a bit guilty of this point...
Then something happened and it switched from Rain to nationality...
I think we both just need to take a chill-pill... Just accept that the other doesn't agree with us, and let be~ I think both sides have valid arguments, but also some strange misunderstandings that ballooned into huge flame wars. From my experience, both Europeans, Australians, Asians, Americans, and even the few Africans I met when I visited Egypt were all friendly and had great personalities... But then there were some passive people who weren't the funnest to be around~ So let's all please stop this war of words and watch the game we've all come to love~
Thanks for reading if you did...

Actually moletrap was correct. Some of Flying's stalkers at the back were not shooting initially, but flying had overwhelming forces and won anyway,

That was a completely accurate call.
Partings position and spread was much better than Flying's, but Flying's army was just too big/powerful after the early build choices.

isn't that because parting had a concave on the high ground while flying was all clumped up on the ramp?

He did have better positioning. High ground, great concave. Just had lesser tech/units

I'm not a moletrap fan but what he said was true though. Parting had the concave but Flying had immortals and the colossi.
No need to nitpick for the sake of bashing the caster.
Have anyone noticed that in two groups, two eSF players (MKP vs DRG and Parting vs MVP) will be fighting over the 2nd place spot to advance to the ro16..

I think its a Bo3(?) then a Bo5 for Ro8/4/Final.
That's how it was last (BW) season
EDIT: Ro8 was bo5 last season and bo3 season before. I remember Jangbi - Flash 2:1 in Jin Air, though that they don't change format every other season like gom
On September 05 2012 21:04 revel8 wrote: What's the format for the next round? Groups again? Straight KO? Bo1 again?
Bo5 ro8 iirc, at least it was so when Mvp got to ro8 at one of BW OSLs (then he peaked his progaming career by taking a game off of Flash).
Wasn't that an MSL?
MSL was GSL type ro32 groups, split bo3s in ro16, split bo5s in ro8 and ro4, bo5 finals. OSL was and is (iirc) round robin ro16 groups with one game in a group per play day and bo5 ro8 on.
EDIT: Oh you're asking the game Mvp took off of Flash. Let me check.
EDIT2: Yes, Mvp took a game off of Flash at Hana Daetoo MSL ro8.
OK Bo5 it seems. Thanks for the info. I actually prefer Bo5 to Bo1 because the series has less chance of being decided by one mistake or a biased map and it generally reflects the better player on the day. Also a longer series of games can have mindgames and a story developing within the series itself. A single game just has a higher chance of an upset.

Last season they changed it to Bo5 for all single-elimination games.
I heard talk that they were going Bo7 for the finals now too?
Yes, also they will re-introduce the 3rd/4th place match which was abandoned after the 2007 EVER Starleague.
Never understood why they got rid of that.
Because after the abolition of the Star Challenge (where the winner of that tournament would play the 4th place OSL player for a chance to be seeded into the next OSL), there was really no point to the match as 3rd/4th would receive equal prize money and would be both seeded into the next OSL.

Flash has been constantly agressive literally all game... really impressive play. At a surface glance he macroed flawlessly behind beautifully controlled agression. His decision to hit the third right then may have saved him from a much tougher game imo.

I'm not one joining the bashmob on Moletrap, even though I see why you'd think this. I just found that moment amusing since he seems to not look at the screen when these things happen. At least one probe CLEARLY died before he said that line.
Did anyone check the supplies before the final engagement? I looked like 5-10 seconds after it started without too much having died, and it was 155 for flash vs 115 for Best. I can't imagine that Flash managed to outmacro Best that badly given the way the rest of the game went, but I also don't think Best had lost so many units so quickly, so I'm not quite sure where Flash grabbed his advantage.

Well he had his 3rd up way earlier. Not to take anything away from Flash's macro though, it was actually perfect.

Perhaps, I didn't think the third was up long enough to account for the difference but that makes sense.

Do 1st or 2nd place matter in OSL?
Kind of, but it's not especially important. When it comes to seed the RO8 all four matches will be a first qualifier against a second qualifier from a group that wasn't theirs. Assume group A winner is A1, group A runnerup is A2, and so on.
A1 will play B2, C2, or D2 B1 will play A2, C2, or D2 .... so on.
So if all the "favorites" get by in the first qualifying spot, then it helps. This is usually what happens, but every once in a while you end up with a Flash vs Jaedong (aka leessang) type match in OSL RO8.

Rewatch the game and focus on the production tab. Flash's macro was near-perfect throughout the entire match. All his supply depots finish literally on the dot. And of course, Flash doesn't queue up unnecessary units on his barracks, so he spends his money extremely efficiently (opportunity cost!).

well not anymore but going 3-0 in your group is more important than going 2-1 because you can still get knocked out in a tie breaker situation even if you go 2-1 but the chances of that happening is pretty slim..
Really awesome results today! Sun once again taking down a top notch GSL player, showing he can go toe to toe with fucking anyone, and Flash advancing like a baws. ^______^

I am not, but can't help feeling personally responsible. They are aware of the issues and know they have to work on it. OGN was a mainstay BW broadcasting organization and they are just new to SC2, so they need some time to get used to dealing with a foreign community, I think. Constructive feedback their way (they probably read TL) always helps!

Actually when I checked VODS earlier today they had PartinG vs Flying and Fantasy vs Oz. Strangely I think 15-30mins later they took them down so there's no VODS available right now. I hope we'll get any update or so!

Thank you for giving us an update. I bought a subscription, then cancelled it when it became clear that OGN was not actually delivering the VODs they were promising. I'm still going to consider re-subbing if OGN gets it together, because I really want to see these games and I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt about the difficulties of moving into a new platform and a new audience. I will say, though, that it would have been a good idea for OGN to make sure they could actually deliver what they were promising before they started marketing it. Might have prevented a lot of hard feelings in the foreigner audience.
Is the VLC stream dead/restricted now? I tried viewing it in VLC because they keep cutting the twitch stream between matches to make the VOD's but the stream wouldn't automatically restart like every other twitch stream does, but VLC could never connect with the link in the OP.

Pretty sure that even with MC's yearly earning, Flash still surpasses him by Team Salary, let alone Tournaments.
And flash's popularity superceed MC's.
Might by SC2's world and MC might be a big fish swimming it but Flash man, he is a motherfucking whale.
OGN shouldn't be charging for vods.streaming for this OSL. They need to work out the chinks in how to deliver the service properly. Furthermore, they need to develop the fanbase among the foreign sc2 community. Charging right away for vods/high quality streaming isn't really the right way to go to achieve this. They also charge more than GOM which is right now more prestigious and offers a higher quality of service to the foreign sc2 fans.
Bad bad bad decisions being made at OGN/KESPA.
They should remember that first impressions last and a lot of people will not watch OSL again because of the bungles being made.

If they give away this season for free, then try to charge for the next, there will be backlash because this season was free.
It's a lose/lose situation; somebody will always complain. Look how it went for GOM and MLG when they wanted to charge more or do PPV.
Most peobably I won't pay for this season unless Flash makes it far, and see how it goes the next. But being OGN, the production values are there, the competitive level will be there, and I do think the technical problem will be fixed.
I can't believe some of you people gave them money. OGN does not give a damn about non-Koreans and never has, they only care about money. It's disappointing that their awful behaviour is being rewarded. They will never see a dollar from me for as long as I live.

I was confused about the VOD issue too... glad I'm not the only one. I thought they might be doing something screwy and uploading VODs to YouTube or something but I guess it just sucks.
I'm sort of amused how sentiment can go from being pissed about GOM's stream quality to appreciating their production value. I guess you just need a little reminder of how bad it could be to appreciate how good it is.
1. Rain + Winner of DRG/MKP 2. like 2 of Oz/Last/Fantasy (Nestea still has a very very slight chance "beats Oz, and Last to beat both Fantasy and Oz to force a 3 way with Oz and Fantasy) 3. Flying + Winner to Mvp/Parting 4. MC and Flash
i was able to watch the vods of the first days as a non-subscriber, why did they change that?
i understand the difficulties they're having but they should indeed get over themselves, the production quality is absolutely awful and deserves no charge whatsoever. kespa being greedy is no big news, i however don't think they're going to act like they used to, it's not the bw kespa anymore.

Well, with my amazing skills of clairvoyance I can safely tell you that you can view them on Chinese websites, I am however unsure about the legality of the whole thing because though some stations were given the right to rebroadcast GOM / OSL I'm not sure if the license carried over for this OSL.
I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me. Especially when BW was teetering on the edge, but even before that, I'd have been happy to pay a reasonable sum for OSL season tickets. If that was the business model that could keep BW successful, so be it. But now they change the game and then ask me to pay to watch? Forget it, keep your VODs to yourself.
It's depressing when you find that after years of being a dedicated fan, they don't care about your viewership anymore because your viewership didn't pay, and it didn't pay because they never wanted it to. I'd have paid to see the OSL back when it was actually the OSL.
It was fun while it lasted though.
Edit: I mean I guess I could watch bootleg VODs, but that's not really the point. I wouldn't have watched bootleg BW VODs either.

AH its one of those

Wow man what happened? For like ten years they've been broadcasting starcraft for free, and now all of a sudden we have to pay to watch sc2 ? This "esport" is getting more ridiculous every day.

For one, we all have to understand that Kespa switched with a reason like everyone else, the avarice of things. But OGN already have a stable source of income from those Reebok, Coca Cola, Pepsi, and 20 other commercials + league sponsors that I can't remember unlike GOM pretty much have to rely on their pay-per-view + additional fundings from Blizzard..
But hey can't blame them for wanting more moneys. They are, after all, a company. And much like Blizzard wanting to cater to the casual playerbase, Kespa wants a fatter pocket for themselves.
I would be willing to pay but the problem is that the price is wayyyy too high than it should be. Just by the amount of content, GSL gives you more game with less price. GSL even offer a season ticket (although they also offer monthly subscription) with lower price.
They need to work out about pricing or they would not be able to woo people to pay them.
OGN's never done this foreigner thing before and they are not treating it as that big of a deal. hence the high price on these things. they are risk averse rather than opportunistic

Thank you dude.
Edit: chinese site ftw. No one can touch them lol.
Ive paid for all the GSLs and the year ticket now since i can just pay once for the year.. but i dont think ill be paying that much for the OSL, yes i really love to watch those players but the production kinda sux quality sux and there arent many games in camparison.
GOM has a great english site nice and clear how everything works vods on the site everything. GOM has their shit together all for a reasonable price..
Id love to see a new site from OSL a bit like GOms with their own flavor and with reasonable prices for the amount of games and production value.
They'll soon realize this price is too high and that they would make 50x more money by lowering the price. $6 to $8 seems about right for this content, IMO.
now, what the heck? have to pay $19.99 to watch this osl? in korea, ITS FREE on TV -_- Why does it always have to involve money? They can just rebrodcast or brodcast in youtube or something like that omg are you seriousadkfl;asjdlg;

Always have to involve money? It's the first time OGN is charging us. Too bad most of us were willing to pay to watch BW before. Now most don't really care.
Thought Flash was done after the successful helion drop defence by Best.
However I wanna make a special mention to something Korean casters were emphasizing throughout the last big battle - Flash's macro was impeccable throughout the battle - the minerals never went above 400, floated 50-350 throughout the battle. All that macro while doing near-perfect micro, as others on this message board mentioned. (if you can get your hands on vod, watch Flash's mineral closely - it does not go over 400)
Just amazing - did not see any other pro doing such amazing micro along with amazing macro at the same time. My personal thought is that Best did fall a bit short after his amazing D on letting Flash get his 3rd without any contest - but Flash did do amazing macro before and during the battle nonetheless.
Also the upcoming MC vs. Flash match up is going to be a real entertaining one.
In the interview that followed his win, casters asked him on how he thought of MC's comment that he sees obvious flaws in Flash's play that needs to be fixed - Flash answered 'I can see obvious flaws myself...' '... in MC's plays'
LOL
Thought Flash was gonna be humble and say that he sees flaws in his own plays, but he obviously got mad by MC's remark, and Flash followed that up by saying that he'll show MC the flaws that he needs to work on in their next match.
It's gonna be an entertaining one - and as much as I respect MC as player, I'll definitely be rooting for Flash. Woot!

When it comes to OSL, I subconsciously automatically support any kespa dude. Even Fantasy.
I thought I'll be leaving this community once the last OSL ended. SC2 might not be as good and exciting as BW for me, but supporting the guys I knew and loved for years seems good and exciting enough to draw me into the SC2 scene. The fact that both sides are doing equally good against the other makes this friendly(at least for me) competition very very interesting.

That's a tough position to take. It's not a GSL, and there's money on the line... that usually makes MC really try hard to get the money.
Tough call, really. I just hope that it's a really great game, and not double cheese.

I hope there will be one side cheese, everyone will be furious in LR, and TL will go to civil war.
Watch the vod released of Flash right when he first started playing sc2, every time he enters a battle his apm spikes up massively as he furiously macros in the middle of battle. You can see his screen show his macro during battle and hear his keys being brutalized. This is how he manages to macro so well.

Nothing in the line sucks.
I expect MC to some sort of 2 base all in, and Flash to play standard macro. They are not gonna give their best and also they won't show an innovative build

That's actually pretty encouraging to hear. Seeing the old legends grow as players in a new game is definitely one of the most interesting things in pro sc2 right now, and it's good to hear that other people feel the same way.

No need to spoiler in the LR thread. In BW Best was known as being one of the few players who had macro as solid as Flash. I don't know if Best's macro will translate (and he was kind of on a downturn in BW).

It's the warp gate mechanics that make BeSt's macro style impossible. He cannot build 40 gates anymore because the warping will be undoable lol, also protoss cannot win with pure gateway units like before, so I don't expect him to do his same old "build stuffs" style in Sc2 at all.

There's nothing on the line in this game, though. They've both already advanced.

You're correct about a less gateway heavy composition being more normal in SC2, but what exactly about warpgates makes things more difficult than in bw where you had to manually click each building and build a unit? I don't see a reason why Best's macro would be weakened aside from the fact that it's not 100% gateway anymore. If his macro doesn't translate I'ld say it's because he was on a downturn at the end of bw.

Reason is that with Warpgate, the Gateway units all have been nerfed from their BW counterpart. So they are not exactly efficacious in comparison. BeSt relied on firing units out of them because they were very mighty and in a sense, his style wouldn't directly translate, racially-speaking.

Well it's just my feeling that all gateway production are not synchronized and you cannot queue units, that made building massive gates difficult because of the headache of choosing which unit to warp each time in function of the Innumber of unit available, sometime i want to build zealots but i cannot build the number i desire because they are not available yet and that makes me crazy lol, but of course that's just my feeling though. In BW we click on the gate and press Z and move on and don't have to think about anything lol.

There's really no difference. SC2 gateway macro is slightly easier because you don't have to build and macro 24 gateways from 2 different main bases (because you can't fit all those gateways in your main and you don't want to get contained), and the gateways are spread apart so there's a bit of screen moving.
Best is actually quite slow and tunnel visioned, his style is very direct, he'd either cut probes and do a wicked timing attack with ridiculous numbers of units, or he'd tech to arbiters and play a split map game until he can pummel the Terran to death. No harass or weird shenanigans, just win straight up. Kinda the opposite of Bisu who has a lot of flair. Day[9] did a really good commentary on Best's ability to just build units.
SC2 actually suits Best very well, I guess he's just not putting his heart into it and creating the really strong timing attacks like he did in BW.
