i was talking about casual situations between friends and stuff. In other cases we obviously use full names, if the person is older\higher or equal in rank u'd usually mention his second name as well. Like Dmitri Pavlovich.

I probably expressed wrong. Introducing yourself officially or with unknown person you want to use you full name, unless you want to look friendly. And yes, we prefer short names over full allmost every time.

The Vladimir shortening is bemusing, and I've never understood how Nikolai --> Kolya. I think it's an issue with transliteration, or in other words, alternate ways of spelling the same anglicized name. So for example, Dmytro can also be spelled as Dimitro, and thus, Dima for short.
I don't think it's a transliteration issue. I can read Cyrillic, and it still makes no sense to me. =/
I feel like I should find some Slavic linguist and ask if there's a general rule for Russian nicknames.

As I said it's easy to say in hindsight. It's obvious dimaga thought he had his greater spire basically done and made the decision to save supply for his 10 broodlords. It's easy to say "oh look at that guy having a meltdown" with the hindsight.
