My $.02. Its really hard officiating. People who haven't done it don't realize that dealing with lots of impatient players who believe that they are right 100% of the time is not only infuriating, but incredibly difficult. If you're a trusting person, or if you give people the benefit of the doubt because you're frantically putting out fires you will often be screwed. Both of the players here did what players do, they tried to get whats best for them. The admins, being inexperienced and communicating poorly are 100% in the wrong. I'm not saying they're awful people or even bad admins for this, just inexperienced. They obviously don't have a set procedure for Def Win/Losses and they don't have a clear way to annotate these wins.

Whether they admit their fault (which would be the appropriate thing to do, and likely put out the fire) or not is up to them. As is whether or not they improve upon their system in the future.

I don't think this thread should be about which of the 2 players was right. Both could have done alot of things better. The real problem is the way these incompetent admins handled the situation.

As one of the previous posters mentioned being an admin is obviously challenging. There are soooo many cups doing it right though, I don't think this is a good excuse.

@ aFreShTV

Hey,
i feel with u because i had the EXACTLY same.

But not at competo, i dont remember the Cup but that was just hilarious.

I mean u get the def win! and play 2-3 more rounds win all... and then u mustä play 4 rounds before? ... shouldnt be allowed... and then u talk to the admin and he is talking about
" OKay.. dont wanna play vs your opponent XY? Then he get the def win.! " wtf?

Wow, this makes the tournament look sooo bad for giving someone with such poor decision making admin control. Sorry to see they robbed your time.

Lol after reading toxii's posts i can now definitively conclude that the Competo Cup is just a terrible mess
Faults from both sides, especially the admin and the absolute failure of logic from anyone (DERP HE'S IGNORINZZ ME, I DEFWIN? => YA U DEFWIN ITS NOT LIKE ANYONE ELSE COULD MESSAGE HIM FOR YOU)

What a joke

you guys dont get the point ?
admin made a mistake because thefreshone LIED to them.
admin corrects his mistake sothat the injustice is solved (me being DQed because next opponent LIED to the admin)
thefreshone refuses the decision of the admin, and puts me on ignore DURING the thing, and refuses to talk to admins
admins DQ him

so hard to get?

not at all because there's no evidence that fresh's intention was to lie for a freewin, you must have done something for him to put you on his ignore list, and it is strange how no one knows, or could've found out you were still playing in that TvT.. Quite understandably fresh would not have wanted to contact you himself.

a really good conflict resolution software system can really help short handed admins handle these free to play large open events.

the problem is building such a system on the kinds of the software development budget of a Competo, CraftCup and the other small prize pool organizations.

Basically you need a database developers and a server admin looking to re-enforce their resume to pull this off.

Just chipping in a few things:

First of all, the admins shouldn't get that much hate. It's really fucking hard to manage an IRC with 500+ mad and impatient players in it, most of which cannot even express themselves very well (in English). That said, the head organization (in this case COMPETO) is at fault for not providing enough manpower. If you are one of 4-5 admins who are responsible for a ton of players, you can't even afford to care for the unique player/person but you just have to solve problems and conflicts as quickly and as efficiently as you can - mishaps like this one are bound to happen at least once or twice per tournament.
The thing is though that most people decide that it's not worth making as much fuzz as TheFreshOne and Toxii made here.

Enough of playing devil's advocate though: The COMPETO SC2 Cup really is a pretty bad looking cup in many regards.

There obviously are admin issues and it certainly looks like many of the admins are very immature etc.
Although they make their tournament only once per week, they're still only at a 50€ + some hardware prizepool, which is weak for an event with 2 sponsors that has been around almost since release.
They probably have the ugliest and worst working brackets in history.
And they also seem to completely forget people (and drop them without a word) who they worked with for several months, because they decide that these people are no use for them anymore

read his post, the whole reasoning behind it is "i have waited long enough" TADAM!!!!!!!!
read my message too, you can see the chatlog of what made him ignore me : "GO TALK TO THE ADMINS" -> ignore list then "if you dont play they will give you defloss" -> i was already on ignore.
he talked to me when i was in the game, at the end of it, i didnt answer because UH when im playing a 40 mins game im not wasting time in a tense game to answer my next opponent ? wether he knows or not how long he has to wait is irrelevant to how long he will actually wait anyway. noone asked thefreshone to decide himself that he had "waited long enough".
i was playing another cup, how many players play different cups at the same time in europe? im not freaking hanibal lecter because i played a game against stephano, in which i didnt even try to turtle or anything but simply tried early game all in to get a fast game.. the two first rounds were a defwin and an easy game, didnt waste any time on it. this is irrelevant to the issue at stake anyways, if anyone had something to say about it it was my opponent in competo cup for the previous round WHICH WAS NOT THEFRESHONE.
you guys dont even understand there is a GIGANTIC mistake in his reasoning ? i , personally, was not his opponent when he tried to get a defwin, he had NO OPPONENT, the round was being played.

More than that, it seems (not proven) based on match history that Toxi was playing Stephano in a separate tournament, not the previous round. So in fact, IF this is true, Toxi was lying and should have been disqualified.

Oh well, stupid Admin decisions. Extremely unprofessional.

I'm confused - does this even matter?

It's the player's responsibility to make sure they're planning their own schedules. A missed match is a missed match, regardless of whether your excuse was true or not.

To OP: Thank you for making this public. By keeping things like this from the community, people run the risk of allowing this kind of disorganization to become the norm..

WoW! Seems like i am not the only one havving BIG troubles with competo organizations.

Last week i was in quarterfinals of the cup. I had to wait for a very long time for my next opponent since there were 2 more rounds to play.

Since i got a little tired i was hitting ladder for a few games. After the second or dthird ladder game i checked the grid again and guess what: My opponent got DEF win over me.

I was jsut wtf how could that happen?

Well unfortunateley i had the opponent who made it into my quarterfinals on Ignore list. I could not read when he was contacting me ofc. All he did was reporting in IRC and they gave him the win.

IF ANY OTHER PERSON WOULD HAVE MSG ME i would have quit ladder instantly and play my games ofc.

Ofc i reported in IRC but those admin just said something like if i have my opponent on ignore list and so i deserve my def loss. lol?

I did neither know what opponent i am going to face nor that i had this specific guy on ignore list. Guess there was a reason way back time since he could have asked anyone to msg me because he saw that i could not read it. Well i can be mad about this guy but the real error was made by the organisation team and the admins.

they just gave him defloss without even asking. and it was quarters. well done. that's how they care about the players. nice experience competo team.

Why would you put the opponents on ignore..,

Why would you not read his post?

I did neither know what opponent i am going to face nor that i had this specific guy on ignore list.

i know nothing about this particular admin error.
i do know you pay $0 to enter the event and there is a cash prize at the end.

the player paid $0 and even if we assume his criticism is valid. He still got full value for his $0. He got nothing.

To put your name on the Map in SC2 you need to enter the Zotac, $100 CraftCups, and the Go4SC2.
Sure a few decisions may not go your way.. but you need to go deep into all these events on a consistent basis in order to get onto a major SC2 team and avoid this grind.
