First of all, thank you TeamLiquid. I love you all <3.
eSports has been growing significantly recently, and I'm sure you've all been getting wiggly and jiggly. I'm sure you've all been getting nerd chills and goosebumps. In the last couple months, we found out about the NASL. Even more recently, we found out about the IGN Pro League. eSports is here and it's here to stay. But some of us just aren't progamers. We don't know how to get there, and can only watch our favorite players, supporting them and cheering them on for them to succeed in what we can't do, to live our dreams.
But with my 1337th post, I thought I'd like to do something very special. A dream project that's now been materialized. A helpful stepping stone for those who want to get serious, competitive, or even for those of you who just want to play casually for fun. Some of you may have been notified about this already, so here are the details. And without further ado...
I present to you all the North American High School Starcraft Team League! But this is more than just your average tournament. The HSSTL will not only host both team and individual style tournaments, but also provide a ranking of all High School players who participate. This way pro teams can see who the best of the best are and you can get your shot at fame and fortune. The HSSTL will provide a list of people and teams who are welcome to teaching you and giving you a spot on their roster.

For each week, a new selection of 7 maps out of the following 9 will be posted. A new selection will be posted for each round of the HSSTL. Style Points will not determine who wins a match, tournament, showmatch, or any kind of event, except to see what Individual and Team can accumulate the most! The winning Individual and Team will also be put in our Hall of Fame. These will not only encourage competition in a different kind of manner, but encourage players to try new things and hopefully diversify and improve the gameplay experience for both players and spectators.
For example,
Un-poked Bunny - 1337 points: Survived 4 cheeses in a Bo7 Team Match.
or
TvT Mech - 10 points: Won a TvT where most of your units were Factory units.
or
Boxer Rebellion - 20 points: Won 10 sets with an SCV All-In.
Users will have to apply for Achievements themselves, attaching the replays and naming the replays appropriately. More details on how to do this later! ^_^

5 players ================= THE EVENTS ================= At first we were just going to follow a simple CSL-esque weekly format of a random GSTL-style weekly match with another high school every Saturday, but we're going to try something fun and more rewarding, hopefully fostering a more competitive atmosphere that will award the more active teams. There are two kinds of Rankings -- Team and Individual There are three kinds of events you as a player or team can participate in. INDIVIDUAL ================= 1) Individual 1v1 Showmatch Series + Show Spoiler +Bo5 or Bo7
You will have to schedule these Showmatches ahead of time -- they will be spectated/casted/scheduled/monitored etc. More details to follow. It will not be like iCCup ladder where you ask your opponent yourself and just report the details.
If you win a Bo5 the winner will get 2 points. If you win a Bo7 the winner will get 4 points.
If you sweep the series, 3-0 or 4-0, then you will receive double the points for that series instead (4 or 8). 2) Individual 1v1 Tournaments + Show Spoiler +Each Friday night at 9:00 PM EST Sign-ups will start Saturday night at 9:00 pm EST, via Challonge. A Win will give your team 1 point.
If you Win with only 1 set loss, you will get 2 points instead.
If you Sweep the series, you will get 3 points. (If your team sweeps the series 4-0).
The teams with the most points from each region will advance to the regionals (East and West for now), where they will be entered into a Round of 8 Single Elimination GSTL-style Tournament.
Note: Until we get enough teams, we may start with a Round of 8 Single Elimination GSTL-style Tournament, with 1 Round each week before starting the ladder-style qualification league. Seeding would be random.

Each team must specify which of these that they are and must alert StAxis, Yoshi, or StKala to make a change, the teams will each have an email address and or a player to contact in game.
Each team can only have up to 4 foreign players! Foreign as in, from a different school!
If you want to leave your team as a foreign player, you MUST be traded with another player or after a season (if/when implemented). Choose your team wisely! You can't just freelance and screw up people's plans, teamwork, and schedules! Pick a team and stay committed as a team member!
You can have more than 1 team from each High School.
Teams have no minimum amount, although it should be obviously beneficial to have at least 5 players so you can play all 5 matches in a Bo7 Team Match. You can sign yourself up as a 1 man team and just play the Individual Events. Teams need to have at least 5 people on them. This will encourage people to look for and recruit other players to get them involved with eSports. There is also no maximum amount.

At the high school level, there are many people around your skill level, but also wanting to improve.
We hope the league will help provide good environments for players to have fun in and improve in.
Remember, not all high schools will have 5 diamond + players ready to assemble. Realistically, each high school will have an average of 1 diamond/masters, and 1 platinum/diamond, and a few below that.
One reason why the Team Matches are Bo5 or Bo7 is so that even the lower skilled players are needed.
I hope you understand now and will reconsider your decision

Lol, well I used to play in the HSL, but then my friend made this. I personally find this to be a lot cooler, more organized, and it seems a lot more fun. The HSL is just a bunch of "high schoolers" playing starcraft.

We are very aware and have both played in it, we felt like it would be an excellent addition to the community to provide a ranking system and team component to the Highschool level. This isn't designed to be in competition with the HSL but to serve a different niche in the community, its a great weekly tournament though

We are a separate league.
I messaged you HSL guys and offered to help speed up the process of team league implimentation but got no response, and it's already been 6 months and you guys haven't started a team league or done any updates for the public.
Anyways, it wouldn't matter because we are doing GSL-style team league and not the CSL-style team league.
Again we are not trying to take your name or anything.
We wanted to have a league with GSTL format, instead of CSL, so i hope you understand that was the main reason.

Ask Yoshi Kirishima about the number of members (although youd preferably want around 4-5)
And if you don't have a team you can still play the 1v1 tournaments.

This sounds interesting and fun, i will try to gather some friends from my school. hopefully this will take off and become like the high school version of the CSL. Also i was wondering what is the skill of the people who are joining because i don't know of anyone at my school that is at higher skill level than silver besides me...

I think this is a great idea.
I wish they had shit like this when I was in high school! Or reversely, I wish I was in high-school now
Either way... I wish you the best of luck and hope this works out well. Something like this specialized format will really encourage participation because of the unpredictable skill levels that will show- should make people want to give it a stab.

Starting 9th grade next year, but I don't know any of the high schoolers, but as far as I know, me and some close friend(s) are the only ones at my school who play SC2.

The winner of the first set stays, while the loser of the first set is eliminated and cannot play for the rest of the bo5 or bo7. You keep playing until you lose to another player. The first to 3 set wins or 4 set wins, wins the Team Match.
Don't worry seniors, there will be a mini season or team league tournament before you graduate! and lots of individual 1v1 tournaments too ofc, and all the showmatches you want to schedule

We decided against the proleague idea because even though there will of course be all kills, the better team will still win and there is a lot more strategy involved, say you go up against a really good Protoss and then you can put in a player who is great vs protoss, this way it also creates a more of a team bonding because instead of just a series of 1v1's it's using your particular skill that you bring to the team. Also as much as we want everyone to have fun we want to find the best players and teams on a separate basis, so the best player may not be on the best team because the best team is designed to play as a team to win those clanwar style games. We of course though will continue to listen to the community and any feedback is greatly appreciated and if there is an outcry for that type of clanwar we will certainly look at changing it.

I agree with many of these points. You may want to reconsider your format so that it aligns with the goals of the league.
While a GSTL/Winner's League format might work for pros, a high school lineup is almost guaranteed to have a much wider range of skill. If one strong player all-kills every round, his teammates might not get to experience the tournament, and it may give an unfair advantage to teams who happen to have one professional level player who is unlikely to lose many games.
The KOTH format seems to discourage a lot of what could make a high school league fun, such as recruiting school friends to train and deepen the line-up. It would turn many otherwise close matches into complete stomps.

The skill level won't be that high. On average there will be 1 diamond, and a few players below that level, perhaps even a bronze or silver, on an average of 5 players per school team, with the exception of foreign players. After all, Diamond only consists of 20% of the 1v1 ladder, and there aren't that many starcraft players per school to start with. There will be likely chance each team match that lower level players will face lower level players. Also, you can decide who to challenge for your showmatch, meaning lower level players can have fair match-ups, and if they play exclusively showmatches, then their rating will be based entirely on how they do in showmatches rather than actual skill.
So, don't worry!

True, you mean if a team all-kills for example 4-0 in a bo7 then some people are left out right? But then again, if we do Proleague format, then that means each team will have to have a minimum number of players, since I'm guessing each player can only play one match?
The bad players will still have the individual showmatches and if they want to, the 1v1 tournaments. Because the "showmatches" will give straight points, a players' rating playing only showmatches will show only his success in showmatches, aka against people similar to his skill level. This way, a master level player losing a lot of showmatches due to not being prepared may be rated lower than an improving bronze player who was well focused and prepared for his showmatch and won more matches.
Again, thanks for your feedback and we will consider the Proleague format.

the huge part of the proleague format is the ace match
basically, normally it would be one player per set, but once it reaches the 7th set, teams are allowed to send any player (allowed to repeat, and usually their best player) out to decide the outcome

also the idea is that coaches need to think, which players are good on what maps, what races are good on what maps, who will the other team send out, etc, and that way they can plan things out as well, this way they could perform "snipes" and whatnot adding to some of the team strategy

The HSL was actually going to do that, except with 4 sets (or so?) and 1 match was a 2v2 (Collegiate Starleague format basically), but we saw the GSTL and how epic it was and really liked the kind of strategy it had and the excitement of having an all-kill. But there are some disadvantages to it that we didn't look into too much...

Perhaps there can be a way where we can implement both... may be we can have "showmatch" for Team Rating where it is Winner/GSTL format, while the main Team League will be in Proleague? What do you guys think? Me and STAxis will have to discuss this.

Yeah we have spring break now. There really is no deadline, because the tournaments are every Saturday, so just join whenever you can!

Hey I was wondering if there is going to be some sort of showmatch for the league this Saturday? Many high schools in my city are entering and if my friends school registers before this Saturday we were planning to do a little showmatch between our high schools and i was wondering if you guys would like this casted as a way to show off the league?

@ kaoriyu- Yeah that would be awesome, the founding teams St and NAC are doing a live showmatch clan war with me and yoshi casting at 8pm est but it would be awesome if we could have multiple that weekend and then give like a tutorial on how the points system works too! @BornNDT- I will definitely check it out! Were starting to build up quite a roster of casters but experienced casters are always needed espeacially if we decide to run multiple streams at once for multiple clan wars in group stages and things like that! I'll pm you after I watch some!

We will have (probably) some sort of seeding in some sort of way, for Team League Bracket or 1v1 Bracket for Individual Ratings or something.

Umm I'm a gold/platinum player (read: gold) but all the people that i know irl that play go to a different school and suck at sc2.
I'll try to improve enough over the summer so next year i can be a diamond/masters recruit. If a masters player would like to help/coach me and has a team already, i will gladly play for you next year.

Ok, compare NYC to some small town out in Montana, its def gonna favor those who live in highly populated areas like NYC- its kinda bad to exclude people from the league just because no1 else in their town plays, or if ppl just dont know about other local players.

I do agree with pokebunnys ideas and will have yoshi put that in the original post, this also works really well for the regionals idea and help with organization, I would say that having people be able to join with the closest team in their state unless there isn't one, what do you guys think?

Hm now this is actually a good idea. Another point of the foreigner slots was because many people have friends that go to the same district but were unfortunately separated by the school system into different high schools.

The name of that founding team wass team was just a temporary inside joke name for them and there were already plans in the works to change it before any of this they just had not decided on a name, they didn't want to be offensive to anyone because the inside joke it's from is not about any implications like that at all, and the team name is being changed they are just narrowing it down to the last couple options right now.

Hey I have questions regarding the Team League, will it be single elimination, and how many rounds will it be? I ask this because I'm not sure what would happen if small team of 5 people played a big team of 10 people. Would it just be a Bo5? Same goes for two teams of 10, would it still be a Bo5 or maybe like a Bo8?

If you look online for an explanation of GSTL format, it is this
each team chooses 1 player to play and then announces the player to the other team
The winner continues playing and the losing team puts in another player
It continues until one team has won enough games (Best of 7 would be winning 4 games, best of 5, 3 games)
There isn't a team gameplay part of it but there is strategy in sending in the right person for each matchup.

This is where I'm confused. I know how GSTL format works, I watched the world cup. But how can you play a Bo7 with 5 people? In the last two games of the series are previous losers allowed to play again? Sorry for so many questions about the format but it's relevant to my situation because as a potential coordinator I need to set a guideline as to the mandatory number of players (at least 5 for sure) I would need to show up each Saturday night if I had a team of 10 people.

Yep, it's Bo7. It took me a few minutes before I understood, but remember, when a player wins, he stays in the next set. Meaning that if 1 team has 4 players, and 1 team has 7, and it is a Bo7, the team with 4 people will have enough. Why?
If Team #2 with 7 players 4-0s Team #1, Team #1 will have enough players to lose that Bo7 0-4.
Now, if Team #1 were to beat Team #2, they would also have enough players; in order to win, they need to win 4-x. Remember, each player stays in after he wins, so even if the series is 4-3, they will have enough; exactly 4 players will play from Team #1, and the last player will only play 1 set and not 2.
Hope you get this, or have a better idea!

We were going to release the brackets and update them later, but we decided to wait until April 15th because it would take a lot of work re-organizing the groups, and it wouldn't be very helpful if we release the groups/schedule to coordinators so they can plan ahead only for us to change them a few days later.

We weren't planning on doing a LB for team leagues because it would take a good but longer, but if people want one we will try and find a way. Originally there were 2 teams per group but we wanted to keep the playoffs down to 3 weeks, meaning 8 teams, but if people would like to see 16 teams we'll look at that too!

Is it essentially Thursday night at midnight, or more like Friday late afternoon or Friday evening? I was hoping to have the whole school day Friday so I could have one more day of fliers and announcements.

The league will end at the end of June so as to allow more matches, and to not interefere with exams during the finals. We're likely going to have another mini-season in the summer, may be for seniors only or something, but we'll think about it.

Anyways, the time you spend in 1 team match that week will only be 1 hour - 2 hours, and you don't have to watch all the games after all; you can just play the 30 min max for your set unless you keep winning and want to play longer xD

You can still play in the individual leagues, but really all diamond and masters is rare in a team, adding lower levels is just fine!

Yes, please don't think of this as a professional league. It's not. On average there will only be a few SC2 players per school, and remember only 20% of all active players are diamond.
So, considering that anything below Diamond is lower-leveled, most teams will only have 1 decent player.

It is the coordinator's responsibility to make sure his team plays by the rules!

Locust was correct, since the idea is to show who the top teams and players are, as well as where they are coming from, not just keeping the matches as even as possible.

That is exactly how we want it.
Although I will have to disagree on the Blizzard Ladder part... it does prioritize in encouraging players to play, but the tradeoff for that isn't too great; you can see your losses once you get into Masters and you can gauge your general skill level from win/loss favor/unfavor points and know your true skill level (at least your performance on the ladder) when you get into Masters.

Whew, finally gathered all teams and split them into regions as best as I could. There were some really empty spots on the map, so I did my best to keep them in their "political" regions, but some simply had to be moved around due to our short 5 week group schedule, so some teams are in different regions, but again I tried to put you as close to your region as I could. Generally, all teams are still really close, but basically I just wanted to make the locations all "correct" xD
Putting them into challonge round robin brackets now, should be up within an hour!

This is an issue regarding the Diefenbaker vs Belrose match. On saturday I was contacted by a member from Belrose stating that their team wanted to reschedule their match for sunday. My team waited all day on Saturday ( just in case) and Sunday for them to show up. Their coordinator never contacted me for any information. I reported the win because of no show but they changed the score. :/

You're supposed to report to me in that situation, not do it yourself. Otherwise I don't know who is telling the truth or not. I can't help you here, sorry.
But since there was no way for me to know either of you was online at the time on Saturday, I'll let you both play a rescheduled match instead of 0-0 Tie (lose-lose).
